It's actually a duplicate of this ticket (
MC-38527) as I was running 14w30c and set my view distance to 32...Normal pick block does this too for me (Minecraft 14w31a) but without the extra NBT on the steve head...

EDIT: I saw it also happen to a pig lured with carrots, though I also saw the sheep manage to climb up after a minute...

Adding -d64 to the JVM arguments fixes this on 32 render distance. Without it occurred when it was over 12.
