Currently in 1.9.2 this behavior DOES replace your tools in java. At least for un-enchanted diamond tools and its ANNOYING. Beyond annoying honestly. Takes all my tools and puts them in my inventory and i cant pick-block them out like i pick-blocked the blocks out of my inventory. This behavior should be made in such a way where it doesn't take my tools and instead takes the blocks in my inventory and swaps them.
I thought this was how it used to be but not im confused (AND REALLY ANNOYED) at having to constantly dig through my inventory to put my tools back in my hands.
If its any help try checking the properties of a few folders that might hold information on the world you lost to see if there are any previous versions.
Also affected by hoglins in 1.16 snapshots.
Also having this issue, it's amounting a lot of lag on our server, waiting for a fix. New features aren't as important as performance, please understand our frustration. We haven't had performance like 1.12.2 in a long time. It's making multiplayer harder and harder to play on.
This is still an issue in 1.16.4
