MC-166093Spruce Sapling can grow even if there are logs within 5*5 area
In 1.14.4 and lower versions, spruce saplings are not able to grow into a 1*1 spruce tree when there are logs or any other blocks which are not leaf or air blocks within the 5*5 square area above the sapling, but in 1.15 pre1 spruce sapling can grow with logs above them.
For example, in the image below the spruce sapling is not able to grow in 1.14.4 but is able to grow in 1.15-pre1. What we supprose to see: in both versions sapling cannot grow

We're actually already tracking this issue in MC-166093, so I resolved and linked this ticket as a duplicate.
However, that ticket has already been resolved. That means that this is not considered a bug and won't be fixed. Please do not leave a comment on the linked ticket.
If you haven't already, you might like to make use of the search feature in the future to see if the issue has already been reported.

Probably works as intended, other saplings are the same. So I'd think it was more a bug in 1.14.4
This 1.14.4 spruce behaviour has existed in game for years even since mc v1.0. So the behaviour in 1.14.4 is obviously not a bug
Tree behaviors are being normalized across the board. This is an intended result of that.
Please reopen and revert this behavior to the old function. Currently this will make 2x2 tree farms slightly more painful to create, but no more difficult to design.
Please consider reverting this as it has a large impact on many designs already in the game since very early versions.
