This has been happening to me since 1.3! (it got a LOAD better when they fixed the animal-eating-wood glitch, but it still flashes a randomly in the hotbar in the 1.4 Pre-release)
For me, it tends to happen when there are a lot of entities in my vicinity. It also seems to only happens on SSP.

pictures of the graphical glitch of the half slabs when placed, unfortunately, since the graphical glitch with the half slabs in the hotbar is only a flash, i was unable to get a screenshot of it.
after a lot of trial and error to get a screenshot of the hotbar glitch i have captured a picture of it happening. the first pic (screenshot 1)shows how the hotbar should look with the half slabs in it. the second pic (screenshot 2)shows what happens during the glitch. this change happens very rapidly and occurs in bursts of 5-7 seconds. it happens randomly.

yeah, im currently on the 1.4 pre-release as well. it happens to me whether or not there are alot of entities around though, its nothing game-breaking, but its a bit of a distraction and annoyance.
happened to me since 1.3 came out, only in SSP have never had this happen in SMP.
This happen to me as well since 1.3 in singleplayer

It is very difficult to replicate, half-slabs and stairs will randomly flash in the inventory or in the hotbar, does not happen very often. I still don't know what triggers it.
Actually it seems 1.4.2 fixed it for me, I have been unable to witness a single item flash even with my inventory/hotbar full of half slabs/stairs.
Does anyone still have this issue on 1.4.2 ?
This was fixed in 1.4.1.
I'm not completely sure, but I think I caught a glimpse of this recurring in 1.5pre. I had just finished placing a long line of quartz slabs so that I could place a minecart line on them when I saw the slabs twitch in my hotbar. Can't be certain, though, as it was only a brief flash and didn't continue like it did before 1.4.1.Nevermind. Turns out it was a combination of the normal bounce items do when you pick another one up and me being tired and not noticing what was going on...
A visual glitch with slabs appeared again in 1.6.2 as in the screenshots I uploaded. The new issue is that upside-down slabs appear as slabs but not all sides are rendered.
Should this issue be re-opened or should I create a new issue?
