I can confirm this happens on my linux machine too(Exactly the same specs).
This needs fixing soon :C.
I was unable to replicate this bug by calling GL11.glGenLists() in a small program.
I don't know though because minecraft may have been using a different OpenGL version than I have for my program so I guess it wasn't 100% reliable.

If I can now run the game, using the exact same version of LWJGL I was before, how can this be a LWJGL problem? If updating drivers fixed the problem, then the problem wasn't LWJGL.

All I see from this console output as that you started a script to start Minecraft, it initialized (perhaps not started), and then you terminated it.
What means "won't start" ? According to your dev console it does start.
Hello,
I though I was running into this as well, but it only took the game long to start up.
What "won't start" meant in this case was that the window titled "Minecraft 13w38a" appeared, but seemed frozen at mojang splash screen - no menu. The log looked similar for me as well.
As I said, letting the game unfreeze was all that was required, but it still took ~7 minutes to start up properly and that much time to shut down as well - this could be a problem on its own.
Some system info:
When shutting down, the game hanged at this:

Yes, what Richard said is what I appear to be observing. The script just runs jre/bin/java -jar Minecraft.jar.
I just changed it to reflect the real problem.
I have two ubuntu machines 1 is running 64bit and works fine with this Snapshot. The other is an older machine ASUS aspire 4810T running 32 Bit. Until the latest 13w38(a) and (c) snapshot was working slowly but OK. The game works fine once you wait for it to start but from clicking the play button on the launcher it takes 6 minutes to get to the game screen. It also takes the same 6 minutes after the quit game button to close the game and get back to the launcher. Not sure if the 64/32 bit difference is relevant or useful but thought i would add it
@Chirs Giltnane, can you describe your java installation on both these machines? (eg java version and vendor)
On the Lenovo T420 I am running openjdk-jre 1.7.0.25 64 bit
on the Acer i was running the same version but the 32 bit version
I then went and got the latest vanilla Oracle Java 32bit from oracle no change in symptoms
Just to mention during the wait period to start the game the CPU is pretty much running flat out doing something and is unresponsive to quit. You have to go into Sysmonitor and kill the java pid to kill it during that time.
My environment, from the dupe bug I filed:
Also getting the same problem using OpenJDK Icetea 2.3.10 (64 bit) on ubuntu 12.04.2
Same problem with one of the cores running 100% for a long time until I manually kill the process.
Hangs at the same place in the logs, just before the normal realm check.
No problems running the w37 snapshots a/b
Thanks for the code tags and removal of the interrupt, Tails. I was meaning to do that, but I forgot.
Same problem using OpenJDK 1.7_21.
Same problem on Fedora release 17 (Beefy Miracle) (64bit machine).
One of 4 cores running flat out for a very long time.
So it appears to be universal accross all distros. Is this also happening on mac?
Edit: No, it's not.
Same problem here.
Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit
oracle java 7 64 bit
Anyone found a solution?
Same problem, same symptoms.
Running Mint Mate 13, Oracle Java 1.7.0_40-b43 32-bit.
Minecraft 1.6.4 and prior work fine, snapshot 13w37b and prior work fine.
Newer snapshots all hang at the Mojang splashscreen without any errors being reported in the log.
So far I fail to see a pattern amongst these systems. For those of you who provide system information, could you add your graphics (ie Nvidia, Intel, AMD) and open source or proprietary driver type.
Video card on machine that has the problem is a intel GMA 4500MHD running intel i8xx i9xx driver
Video card on affected machine is RADEON HD4670 running the open source driver.
Unable to reproduce on:
Ubuntu linux 13.04 x64
Oracle java 1.7_40
NVIDIA Geforce 650M proprietary driver via Bumblebee project
nor
Ubuntu linux 13.04 x64
Oracle java 1.7_25
AMD RADEON HD5560
nouveauopen source driverI have two systems with this issue:
Laptop has an integrated Intel HD Graphics processor (Toshiba Satellite L645-S4102).
Desktop has an ATI R520 graphics card.
Both are running the same Linux distro mentioned previously (Linux Mint 13) and both are running the same version of Java (Oracle version 1.7.0_40-b43).
Neither system has additional or proprietary drivers loaded. Everything is from the base install.
I can confirm, does not work on 13w39b.
Same problem for me (tested with 38a, 38c, 39b).

Is the following information useful?
I'm having the same experience, but with an odd twist - 13w38a worked fine for me when it first released, but since I installed 13w38c (I missed the 13w38b release) the application hangs at the Mojang splash screen on all three versions (13w38a/b/c). So far the 13w39* versions also hang at the splash screen. I have also tried running the launcher with the --workDir option to set a clean working dir with no improvement.

Thank you my mistake.
Given that it looks like a hang initializing audio, just for funsies I rebooted and disabled hardware in BIOS, and then tried again: no dice, startup still hangs.
So presumably it's not wedging on hardware, at least.
I wonder if it would be an alsa vs pulseaudio issue.
I've run into similar issues with pulseaudio before - unfortunately, disabling pulseaudio doesn't seem to help here.
I use pulseaudio and have had no issues. I was wondering more for those using alsa.
I'm using pulseaudio. I can make a video of what's happening if needed. (Suggestions on screen recorders would be appreciated)
Use Kazam to record screens in linux.
https://launchpad.net/kazam
I still have this problem. Any luck so far?
Can confirm I am getting the same issue on my Linux Mint machine, Oracle Java output of "java -version" is:
java version "1.6.0_26"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_26-b03)
Java HotSpot(TM) Server VM (build 20.1-b02, mixed mode)
I am also affected. Using integrated Intel graphics.
barney@pine ~ $ glxinfo | grep "OpenGL version"
OpenGL version string: 3.0 Mesa 9.0.3
barney@pine ~ $ java -version
java version "1.7.0_40"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.7.0_40-b43)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 24.0-b56, mixed mode)
I can confirm that the bug persists in snapshot 13w41a.
Ubuntu 12.04 64bit
java version "1.7.0_25"
Intel integrated graphics
13w41a seems to take even longer than 13w39 series snapshots did to start. I have tried leaving it to run for 3 hours now to see if it would just start, and nothing. I did find that if I killed the Java process (which was at 100% CPU the entire time) the launcher would reappear and give the following output:
Game ended with bad state (exit code 143)
Ignoring visibility rule and showing launcher due to a game crash
As for machine details:
System.getProperty('os.name') == 'Linux'
System.getProperty('os.version') == '3.2.0-23-generic'
System.getProperty('os.arch') == 'amd64'
System.getProperty('java.version') == '1.6.0_27'
System.getProperty('java.vendor') == 'Sun Microsystems Inc.'
System.getProperty('sun.arch.data.model') == '64'
I've got:
Intel® Core i7-2640M CPU @ 2.80GHz × 4
8gb RAM
Intel Sandybridge (3.0 Mesa 8.0.4)
For software I am running Linux Mint 13 Cinnamon (which is based on Ubuntu 12.04) and no proprietary drivers are in use, just the open source Intel graphics stuff.
Yes I can also confirm that the 7 minutes is now wont start at all with the 41a snapshot, Sat on the Mojang splash screen all night without starting.
Could it be an issue with integrated Intel graphics?
@Bobby, I doubt it, as some people have reported it using other cards.
For those encountering this issue, open a (vanilla) 1.6.4 game, hold down F3 + C for 10 seconds, and attach the resulting crash report here.
I'm unable to reproduce this issue on Arch Linux.
A friend is also unable to reproduce this issue on Debian 7.1 (Wheezy).
Another friend has successfully reproduced the issue on openSUSE 12.3. (However, I don't know whether 13w41a/b starts for him at all, yet.)
Still broken as of 13w41b now.
Any other tests I can run to help out?
@Tony, if you know how to try an strace, you could perhaps find something?
I don't, but I can learn. Let me see what I can learn.
I attached an strace file. Run with 13w41b, using strace -ttT
I chopped off the parts that came before the game launches because it doesn't seem likely this is a launcher issue.
requested crash report attached and text here
@Tony: That doesn't seem to be very meaningful. Please run strace again with the -f option added.
The results of running strace with -f are just slightly too large to attach here (file limit is 10mb, actual text output is ~16mb)

I am also seeing this problem on Ubuntu 12.10 x64 bit. Game hangs on startup on the Mojang splash screen.
My laptop is a Dell Inspiron with an Intel i7 and Intel HD 4000 Graphics. Various system information below:
mark@mark-laptop:~$ uname -a Linux mark-laptop 3.5.0-37-generic #58-Ubuntu SMP Mon Jul 8 22:07:55 UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linuxmark@mark-laptop:~$ grep '^model name' /proc/cpuinfo | uniq model name : Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3632QM CPU @ 2.20GHzI manually triggered a crash to dump my system stats through Minecraft 16.4 (which works perfectly) and got the following:
Please let me know if there is any additional information that I should provide!
Another F3-C report for 1.6.4:
Another huge output file of "strace -f -tt -T", with 13w41b, interrupted after about 1 minute of hanging:

So far all of these crash reports indicate Mesa DRI Mobile Intel drivers.
Although previous people have reported Radeon...
I'm still getting paused at startup. Also seems to be a longer if not indefinite pause as of 13w41a.
Also I'm using a Radeon Graphics card.
Here is the crash log as requested
Here's my crash report:
Ok AMD included, though they all so far are still Mesa. plus none of them use OpenGl 4
I took the liberty of running an strace (see attached file: minecraft-strace.log.bz2) The unzipped attachment is in the neighborhood of 57MB.
The specific command I used was:
strace -CfttT java -jar ~/games/minecraft/Minecraft.jar > ~/temp/minecraft-strace.log 2>&1
I'm open to doing just about any testing if anybody has any ideas.
My (uneducated) guess as to what's happening is that Mojang changed something in the way that they interface with OpenGL and that this is causing Minecraft to fall on its head. Just a guess tho.
I also find it interesting that a couple of folks using Arch have reported not having this problem. I'm going to try Arch on one of my systems having this problem to see if I can narrow this down to a distro or hardware/platform issue. If anybody's already gone this route, let me know as it'll save me wasting my time.
Unfortunately I can't switch distros just for a video game @Mercy Me, otherwise I'd test it too.
UPDATE: Based on user comments, this is probably not going to help.
For those who are experiencing this issue, please try running the launcher as follows:
If you get an error such as bash: padsp: command not found, try using /usr/sbin/padsp or /sbin/padsp instead.
Alternative solution
This involves writing a wrapper script around the java binary to execute it using padsp.
First, you need to find out where your java binary is located:
Note the path down, as you will need it for the following commands.
You have to elevate to root privileges as follows:
If the above command doesn't work, try this one:
If that worked, proceed to execute the following commands, replacing /PATH/TO/java with the actual path you got earlier. (Note: ^D means you should press Ctrl-D.)
Now you can run the launcher as you normally would.
I already run my Minecraft instance with padsp, and this issue persists.
I tried it with padsp (version 13w41b). It doesn't seem to make a difference. (Still hangs.)
I tried padsp as well. No luck on my end.
Reproduced with snapshot 13w41b. Graphics card is ASUS HD 6450 (Radeon 6450 chipset)
Running with padsp did not help.

I have tried this on the same machine with 2 different distro. When using the intel-graphics-drivers-installer, it works on Ubuntu 13.04, however, on Elementary OS, I can't use the intel-graphics-drivers-installer; it does not work. So...
On the same machine, Samsung RV-510

Yes-----------------|--------------------NoTo get my sons laptop working I switched him from Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 386 to 13.10 beta 64 bit with a clean install. And the latest snapshots now work. So either the the switch to latter versions of the drivers did the trick or the switch from 32 to 64 bit did the trick.
No issues for me with Ubuntu 12.04 64bit, nVidia GTS 450 w/ 319-updates driver.
I just tried 13.04 on one of my affected systems and it has the same problem 1.6.4 still works fine though. I haven't gotten around to installing and testing Arch: still on my to-do list.
I won't duplicate my system info since it's in a previous post.

As far as I can tell, it's org.lwjgl.opengl.GL11.glGenLists which is the culprit, mostly on intel cards. Anyone fancy making a smaller test program to try and replicate the issue?
For what it's worth:
barney@pine ~ $ dpkg -s libgl1-mesa-glx | grep Version
Version: 9.0.3-0ubuntu0.4
I'm having the same problem too.
So the new snapshot still freezes, but when the console reopened after terminating Java, I noticed this line in the output:
As far as I can see from googling around the alc_cleanup: 1 device not closed thing really isn't important and doesn't mean much because the OS will clean up the resources anyway. Shouldn't affect the running of the program.
If you were wondering AL lib refers to OpenAL or Open Audio Library which minecraft uses.
Edit: I also believe that this bug is because of or causing a small memory leak.
Looking at system monitor the memory usage increases by about a mebibyte every 4 seconds and doesn't stop.
I wouldn't put it past the Al resources not closing to be because of the new sound system.
GL11.glGenLists() appears to be the issue. I have tested a custom compiled version of lwjgl that "disables" this method and Minecraft starts up fine without any issues.
samrg472, let me be the first to congratulate you if this was the problem. If it was, could you possibly upload your custom compiled version of lwjgl and list instructions on how to use it?
Using a custom compiled lwjgl requires patching the launcher to prevent the custom libraries from being overwritten by the launcher (due to etag mismatch), I will not list instructions or host anything on a bugtracker. If you're serious, just look at my github URL (easy to find) to contact me (leads to IRC).
I have the Same issue
Also experiencing the same issue. Cannot run Minecraft 13w42b under Ubuntu 12.04 using Oracle JRE 7, because it hangs at the Mojang logo with CPU at 100%. Would love to see a fix to this!
My system seems a little different, just trying to help. Because it continues to suck up RAM, I severely reduced the available memory to Java. At 63M, the problem persisted; at 62M it crashed. Here is my stats:

So is all that needs to be fixed the lwjgl? Did it have any ill affects on the gameplay?
The problem is not a fault of LWJGL. It is how Minecraft abuses OpenGL (specifically GL11.glGenLists).
I waited for two hours and it never started on 13w41a.
Confirm it does not work on 13w43a. Does not start at all.
So has any one been able to make this work at all without relying on mojang to fix it?
I can confirm that the 1.7 pre-release does not work either. If people could make sure they have up voted this issue and share it around, so Mojang can be notified of the issue, so it can be fixed as soon as possible.
I also confirm that this is still a problem in the 1.7 pre-release.
I think we just need the bug to be "Confirmed." I don't see why it's not already, since we even have someone who knows what the problem is and how to fix it.
I had the same problem on ubuntu 12.04 running an Radeon graphics card using the default open-source graphics driver.
I switched to the ati/amd fglrx driver and can now play the latest snapshots and the 1.7 pre-release.
Not much help for the intel graphics card users I'm afraid.
This is a problem in your drivers choking on the call:
GLContext.getCapabilities().glGenLists
when some GL15/GL21 related things have been done. The call happens in LWJGL internals and there is nothing we can do to remedy it. Please report the problem upstream to your relevant vendor's driver providers.
Erik, I understand what you are saying.
However, this only became an issue after snapshot 13w37b with no changes on two of my systems that have the problem. Both systems have different video hardware and different video drivers.
Would it be possible for you to confirm if glGenLists is being used in some way that is different than it was prior to 13w37b?
I've successfully launched 1.7 after a few hours of screwing around, but I wouldn't consider it stable in any way. I had to use the ppa provided by ppa:xorg-edgers and restart.
Upon loading, immediately jumps to 2GB of memory usage and never seems to decline. I've yet to try actually playing a game though because I am at work at the moment (I can screw around in the terminal and nobody questions it, but playing a game would draw attention) but will attempt when I get home tonight.
If I was able to 'fix' this issue without a change to LWJGL (still on 2.9.0) then I don't see how this is an LWJGL issue.
Erik, what do you mean when you say that there is nothing you can do. I have one machine with side by side windows 7 and ubuntu the hardware is the same none of my drivers have updated in either ( internal intel integrated graphics card) . Windows runs and ubuntu doesn't, and it only happens after 13w38a. I reiterate nothing has changed.
We're not using glGenLists in another way. We're only requestion FBO support from the videocard and if it claims it does we're using it. We're also polling for the OpenGL version to see if it's >GL21, if not we display a warning message on the title screen.
I'm guessing somewhere there are issues in the drivers/something when you start using 'newer' opengl features (FBO is from GL15) and still use glGenLists.
@Jason Hazel
You've already proven that changing your drivers fixes the issue. Again, this is not an issue that Mojang can even remotely touch, it even lies outside of LWJGL on which we only have moderate influence (in that we could compile a custom version and ship it).
The fun part of all of this is that I've never even said LWJGL is the problem, I just said that the call having the problems originates in LWJGL. I even explicitly told you to report this upstream to your vendor/driver provider.
Feel free to learn to read or side-grade to windows, quite sure it works with a sane set of drivers.
Sorry for misunderstanding. I removed my comment when I realized my mistake, and before you posted your last response.
Is it safe to assume this call to glGenLists wasn't used in 1.6.4, hence no problem?
glGenLists has been in the code since the very very first commit.
As i've explained before, the only 'new' thing we do is polling for FBO support. Apparently that somehow breaks internal state or 'support' for glGenLists in your drivers.
Whatever they are doing, a capability check cannot ever 'hang' like it is doing.
This bug affects a variety of graphics cards and drivers, including many modern ones. AFAIK minecraft is the first and only game to die on this bug. I've been playing since alpha and it's going to suck having to stop playing over a bug that's been marked as "invalid" despite its cause not being determined. You can't reasonably say "it's your graphic drivers" if it affects a range of drivers :/
I'm happy to provide a VNC or SSH service to a mojang developer if they want to investigate this further.
For what it's worth, I did a test. I put together a program and called glGenLists within it. I ran it on one of my computers having this problem and... no problems arose. glGenLists returned a correct value, there was no crash, and the app didn't hang. This makes me think that glGenLists is not the source of the problem (as Erik was indicating).
I'm not sure where this leaves things, just thinking that this might eliminate one more potential source of the trouble.
Erik, moving to Windows is not a proper solution. There is definitely something wrong here. This is not INVALID. Two operating systems on one computer - Ubuntu 13.10 and Elementary OS - one plays MC fine and the other does not. Ubuntu seems to work acceptably for me. On other laptops of mine, however, MC does not run. I have tried running intel-linux-graphics-installer. I got the installer to work on my Ubuntu 13.10 OS before I upgraded to 13.10 (it was at 13.04) and the installer worked fine. However, the installer no longer works on 13.10 or Elementary OS at all. Ubuntu plays MC, Elementary does not, new Ubuntu installations also do not. Mojang and Intel need to not push this problem on each other. I believe a simple "if" in your java code for MC could fix this issue. I regret to ask, but Erik, do you or any of your "assistance" or debug team have a system with this problem? Have you seen this yourself? If not, step 1 found. If so, step 1 also found. Debug MC on that machine.
To you comments before: Yes, MC would work perfectly, PERFECTLY, if our video drivers were perfect. Intel is too stubborn to work with Linux to get this fixed, however. It is possible to fix this problem within MC.
If it worked before in the early snapshots of 1.7, examine what was exactly changed between working versions and not-working versions. If you simply sit back and say "not my problem", you are going to lose many players.
and this is still a major issue that remains unfixed, even after a month...
Spend 2.5 hours debugging this with barneygale on IRC and we found the cause!
It was our code after all, a small change snuck into an innocent looking commit (even when we found the commit it took 30 mins to find the actual line causing it).
In either case, it is fixed! \o/
we can always count on you, Grum. you have made the game playable again
Cheers! Thank you Grum and barneygale
Thanks so much for this fix. It only took 2.5 hours
. Glad it works well now. +1 for you Erik.
Thank you so much for this fix
Thank you Erik for being patient and listening to the ramblings of frantic fans.
Many thanks to all involved in finding a fix.
