MC-49126Glowstone crystal formations are missing their bottom layers
Glowstone crystal formations are generating differently as of 14w04a. Where they previously generated large 3 dimensional crystals, most clusters generated in 14w04a and after are now clipped to the top layer only (persisting in 14w08a). The result is significantly less glowstone in the nether.
To see the results open snapshot 14w03b and create a new world (I used the seed "GLOWSTONE" all caps, without quotes) and compare the crystals generated to those from 14w04a+ using the same seed.
I have attached screenshots showing the observed difference
I traveled to the Nether and used "/tp 4 64 8 55 20" to get the same position and direction for each screenshot.

Also, unrelated to this issue, I would strongly suggest updating your Java to the latest _51 version.
So, when are we going to be seeing any updates on this? Is this issue keeping the next snapshot from being released or something?

Still present in 14w21a, I attached another screenshot showing that normal crystal formations will still occasionally generate, but most of them are missing their bottom layers.
Digging through decompiled code, it seems the bug is simple. There are two classes for generating glowstone formations ("bam" and "bas" in 14w21b), and the coordinate calculation for one ("bam") is missing a '-' so it tries to generate the glowstone formation above the seed block rather than below.

Still exists in 14w30b. Sorry, to nag but this was reported in February. Its now late July.
For a single character bug fix, it seems ridiculous that this wasn't fixed almost immediately!
Ok this is still annoyingly in 14w31a. I really hate to say this but this bug should have been FIXED by now. Fix it already holy cow. It's a small bug that has enourmous consequences for people, glowstone is already an ultra-high risk thing to get, It's on the ceiling over lava almost all the time and with sea lamps coming up, glowstone is losing its viability as something useful in survival. Sure, you'd need it for redstone lamps but at this rate thats all it'll be used for BECAUSE THERE IS NOT ENOUGH SPAWNING ANYMORE. I mean it's spawning in 1/3rd the amount at best anymore. Fix this bug already. It's been around for months, now and it's a simple typo.

Is it safe to play in the overworld only until this bug gets fixed so that glowstone will then generate normally?
Probably yes, Nether gets generated when using a portal the first time.
