[Linux] Cannot edit version of any installation
I Cannot change the Minecraft version within the launcher. It just does not change to the version I have selected, so it just stays at 1.14.4, the attached video shows exactly what is happening.
I have managed to install 1.14.4 optifine and 1.7.10 forge but forge does't launch successfully. I understand why forge is not working as I need a valid 1.7.10 install first. Optifine is working perfectly fine though, albeit on 1.14.4.
No clue if this is only me or if I can fix it myself or if it requires a patch.

Duplicate of resolved issue MCL-12083.
It is currently impossible to change the version of any Minecraft installation within the launcher GUI - but only manually from configuration file launcher_profiles.json.
Further see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ND0CAg3-bKY
I am using the generic Linux launcher ("Other")
Tested on both the stable and beta versions.
I am using launcher version v.3.3.13-2.1.3. My issues seem similar to MCL-12083, but since I am on a later version of the launcher than the resolved version (2.1.9322-2.1.9324) it seems like a new issue.
- In the "installations" tab, when I create a new installation, if I select any version from the version menu, the selected version is discarded and instead it populates "latest release".
- In the "installations" tab, if I select the "edit" drop down menu from the ellipses on an installation, it does not open the profile to edit.
- In the "installations" tab, if I select the "duplicate" drop down menu from the ellipses on an installation, it does not duplicate the selected profile.
- In the "Play" tab, if I try to switch installations, my selection is discarded and the installation originally at the top of the menu stays populated.
WORK AROUND: I can change the version by directly editing my ~/.minecraft/launcher_profiles.json to the desired version, name, etc. I can edit the "lastUsed" key to put my desired installation at the top of the list in the "play" tab by putting a newer timestamp value than the current top installation.
Aside: lastUsed key does not seem to actually update based on usage. It stays at unix epoch time unless edited as specified in the workaround.
Hello!
This bug is fixed in the beta version. I don't really have a ETA for a stable release but would you be willing to try out the beta?
You can find it here:
Debian/Ubuntu:
https://launcher.mojang.com/download/Minecraft-beta.deb
AUR:
https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/minecraft-launcher-beta
Other:
https://launcher.mojang.com/download/Minecraft-beta.tar.gz
Thank you,
I'll gladly use the beta, but will the beta automatically update if a stable version gets released?
No unfortunately not.
We don't have any automatic upgrades on Linux at this point. It's something we're looking into fixing in the future.
Thanks for the help, much appreciated!
