According to MCPE-48342 coal is also affected by this furnace bug.
This seems like the same furnace issue as in MCPE-47907 (stone) and MCPE-48342 (coal).
This is because any object cooked/smelted in a furnace gets a high damage value see
MCPE-47907for a better explanation.Thank you for your report!
