Further to my initial frustration - I've spoken to Microsoft support and they've said they can see the achievements and that the responsibility to reinstate the character lies with Majong directly.
@danish pirate Yes it happens every time and this doesn't help the problem we already have where we've lost our initial characters with the most progress made. Very disappointed the game doesn't have a cloud save for character progress and that builds are lost due to local files. I hope we get our characters back otherwise I have no desire to play this fun game. It's ruined my entire experience of the release.

Mine was wiped completely! No trace of my progress except for xbox achievements..
