Forgive me, I'm an IT tech who can fake being a network Engineer.
We have several Bedrock servers running on our network at home. I run 3 on Virtual Machines on a HyperV server, and 1 (just built for testing) is running on my laptop. These have all worked perfectly in the past. I have 3 server running 1.16.201 and 1 outdated on 1.16.100. I have Windows firewall disable on all VM's at this time for testing.
The network is "flat", no VLANS or such, and everything is running on Unifi a AP and Switch. I have confirmed network traffic is flowing and used Wireshark to watch the server broadcasting pings and BROWSE broadcasts, and get responses from clients (more on this later). The network is only using IPv4. IPv6 is not setup in the router.
Client are 2 Moto Power phones, 2 Moto tables, and 1 Microsoft Surface Pro (Win10 20H2). All clients can run Minecraft cleanly, and generally can see each other (1 tablet sometimes can't see the others much to the angst of it's 4yo user). All are on 1.16.201.
Now the issue. None of the clients can reliably see the servers. When a client starts up it may or may not see a given server, and after a time entirely stops see it. I have watched via Wireshark the packet captures and the servers continue to broadcast, but the clients stop responding. If I restart Minecraft on my phone it'll see some of the servers (at this time the one on my laptop and the 1.16.100 one), and while it can see it, it'll respond to Ping requests from the server. Once the client stops responding to Ping the server disappear. These Ping/Pong's are using RAKNET protocol not ICMP. ICMP Ping and Tracert to and from servers are 100% clean and nothing ever drops.
If I add a server manually by IPV4 it may connect and work, but once I leave the game it won't let me reconnect for an unspecified amount of time.
I'm 90% certain this is something with the Minecraft client, and not the network or Server. Needless to say, I learned a lot about how Minecraft talks with servers. I've been beating my head against this all week.
MCPE-21416 is now the ticket for the Realms/Nether issue. If you have any information relating to entities despawning when traveling to the Nether in multiplayer, please report it there.
Sarah, due to the fact that you seem to be the only one so far to report having problems and NOT be using Realms and/or the Nether, and since you mention the entities clustering together near fences, I think your previous suggestion that they might be escaping the fence is probably correct. I suspect you are encountering MCPE-1982. To make sure, perhaps you could try putting all your entities in minecarts to restrict their movement. (Remove any rails underneath the minecarts... the entities might still be able to control the minecart & move it otherwise.) Yeah, it's kind of expensive, but if MCPE-8002 was still a thing, then the entities (including the minecarts) would still despawn. If MCPE-8002 IS fixed like the devs think it is, then the entities shouldn't despawn or be able to escape. I also recommend making the pens out of a non-suffocating block if they aren't already so that if the entities start to escape they won't suffocate in the walls.
erik metzler, you're probably also experiencing MCPE-1982. As for the villager-door-thing, that sounds like a completely separate issue. I'm not sure if it is a bug, though. I think villagers prefer houses that are well-lit, so if that house has the brightest interior, that might be why they are all going into the same place. It migth also be because the other houses are so far away they count as a separate village, so the villagers consider that one house to be the only house in their village. I know there are some various bugs relating to villages & villagers right now. Try searching the bug tracker for all open/reopened tickets relating to "villager" or "village" and see if anything sounds like the problem you are experiencing.
On version 14.3 my wife and I both experience this issue. If I host, she has it. If she hosts, I have it. I am on a Nexus 10, she is on iPad 2.
Confirming that this is still present in PE1.0.2 using a Nexus 10 and Samsun Tab 4, on a Realm server.
Experience this in 1.0.3 on a realm. I use a nexus 10. Seems to happen when I travel away from my farm and the chunk unloads. Doesn't happen on save and reload. Happen on both peaceful and easy. But the biggest loss was on Easy.
This is only an issue when playing on a realm for my wife and I. We can work around it by setting the GUI to classic and make the map zoomed in a crafting table. I read somewhere that the issue is from the realm servers running Windows 10 version which does not have the anvil recipe for map zooming.
I could have sworn I found that information here, but don't see the comment any more.
I have also seen the same "clustering" behavior in my pens, but for me on a Realm, in the same world were animals then later disappeared.
I've also seen villagers going insane with an entire village trying to go into and out of the same house/door. Not sure if it's a related behavior.
Also, Safari Explorers on Android version of Bedrock. (My son is quite upset)
Same steps to reproduce, but cannot access the files to check the version mismatch.
