Fresh install of both Minecraft and Java, upon pressing play the launcher disappears and reappears after a few seconds.

Yes, it probably is a driver or other kind of technical issue.
It would be good to know what kind of graphics cards are affected by this issue and whether they fulfill the minimum system requirements.
