Unable to update the Minecraft Native Launcher
I downloaded the new launcher, the one that does not require Java to run, and installed minecraft. When I go to launch the game however I am unable to download the launcher. It says "Unable to update the Minecraft Native Launcher." My file "nativelog" says this:

Do you have any firewall, antivirus programs, or parental control settings currently? This may be caused by one of those. Try disabling them and running the launcher again.

I tried disabling the firewall for Minecraft, but that didn't work either.
"Data of downloaded file starts width: "<!DOCTYPE " - Possibly bad proxy"
This tells me that it tried to download that (very much-)binary file and it got back a web page. This cannot happen unless something is sitting in between - such as a proxy (like saying "hey, you need to log in!" or "I've blocked this because of reasons!"), firewall, antivirus or some kind of parental controls.
Do you have any of these?
Yes I do. I currently have McAfee, which sucks, and Minecraft has full access to everything. That didn't work. I even tried removing Minecraft from the firewall list, which didn't work as well. Everytime I run a program that is not on the firewall list McAfee will force me to add it. I am considering switching my anti-virus or turning off my firewall temporarily.

When I do that, the file gets downloaded.
If your browser downloads that file too but not the Minecraft Launcher, then it's a Firewall / Antivirus issue on your end.
It did download those files. Going to disable firewall and see... Thank you for your response!

Kumasasa and dinnerbone I seriously need your help, I am a youtuber and everything is stuffing up, I saw your comment dinnerbone about the bad proxy and thats whats happening to me, tried turning off fire wall and avast anti virus but same thing happens, ok, so if u could help me with that that would be great [plz dont tell me this is 4 bugs only because that other link doesnt help me] this is the only place I can actually get a reply out of someone, the other minecraft launcher with java when i press play the blue bar slowly makes its way to the end, takes about 3 mins and then disappears and play button lights up again, the update news on the launcher doesnt load and in its place is white space. Guys I am not that smart with these kinda things but hey Im talking to the heads at minecraft, surely u guys can provide some insight, plz, look in2 it, THANKYOU SO MUCH

I was having the same problem. But after I disabled my antivirus programs (BitDefender and MalwareBites) It worked fine.
I'm having the same problem without using a firewall or an antivirus program (got server response 200 which is a timeout). Because of this, I'm not able to play Minecraft anymore without using an old Minecraft version.

Hi, I'm having the same problem and can't seem to update my native launcher. Please forgive me, but I am a complete noob when it comes to Minecraft, but through instruction, I manage myself through the problems I encounter. However, this has proven to be tricky; so I hope someone could please help. I'm sure it's something simple I'm just not sure what it is haha! Anyway, here is the attached native log. & I also have the .dmg not the .exe version if that matters or means anything? I also tried downloading the file at the address listed on the native log and for some reason it looks like it did nothing. A window titled, "Updating Minecraft" pops up with a loading bar which states, "Downloading runtime" each time I try to open the Minecraft application and after a few minute a window pops up saying Native Launcher needs to update. I've never encountered this problem before and I'm completely dumbfounded as to what is causing the problem.
