This seams to affect Android devices too. At least since the Realms testing happened. When I create a new world, I can't erase the name of the world when pressing backspace and what I type doesn't show either. Same when editing the name of the world.

Thanks Lane. At least half of this issue (the backspace not working) is in ticket MCPE-11654.
Can you explain a bit more about what happens when you enter text in the server port? It sounds like you see the default text 19132_ (the underscore being the cursor in this example) and then if you typed 123 you'd actually see 192132321_ Let me know if I understand correctly.

Legoboy, can you describe how to reproduce the bug and what you did to cause you to be unable to type?
First, launch MCPE. Then you can't use the backspace button any where there is a text box in MCPE .
Using the backspace button in World Name field, Seed field, or Chat box does not delete the text that is present. It simply moves the cursor to the left.
Additionally when using chat you can not see what you are typing, you get your keyboard and a black screen, no text.

I have a reason to believe it only occurs iOS 7 devices. I have a iPhone 4s too, running iOS 8.1. This bug does not occur.
BUG FIXED: just update your system. My brother had this bug, updated his iPod, and it worked!
The problem is I don't want to lol. This is a MCPE issue, not a system one...
I can open a separate ticket for the missing text in chat if necessary; I wasn't sure if they were related to a single keyboard issue or two different issues. And I would love to update to ios 8, but itunes won't let me, my 4s iphone is apparently EOL.
It is. You cant see the chat, but at the same time you also can't use backspace. In fact, you can't use backspace in the whole MCPE app.

David Rodgers yes please open a new ticket (well do a search first of course) for the separate issue of missing text in chat.
Same two issuses.. I simply cant type on anything because the bacspace just moves between the letters and the spacebar too and sometimes it just separates the letters making stuff worst. And the chat becomes black too. It is an ios only glitch problem. I have ios 7 ipad mini and ios 6 ipod 4th generation, but the problem is on the ipad.

So I can't enjoy any servers because the "invalid username" that I can change...
I'm using iOS 7 (7.1.2) and it is the last update I can get for iPhone 4.
It seems the problem is on iOS 7 and 0.13.0 version of MPE.

This seems to be resolved for MPE on iOS 9.2. I was having the same problem (on iPad), backspace would not delete characters, and couldn't type any other characters reliably. Seems to be resolved after updating to iOS 9.2, with no other updates to Minecraft, etc.

Nope. Backspace works but when you chat your screen is black.
I was wrong, I have an iphone 4, not 4s and it cannot be updated past ios 7.1.2
I have the same problem, yet I use an Apple not IOS.
And the delete button works on the chat, but I still can't see what I'm typing.
This bug is getting really annoying so please find the solution!

This is an issue with Android devices too.
My device: Samsung Galaxy Tab 4.
Affects 0.15.0 Realms Build 4.
This issue is invalid, unless it affects 0.14.2 as well. Can anyone confirm it for 0.14.2?
kaleb418 There hasn't been an update for Android devices running 0.15.0 realms to 0.14.2 or higher to fix this, so this issue still affects 0.15.0 Realms Build 4 which is what I'm currently on. Awaiting the next release to see if this is still an issue on my device.
