Taking fall damage in this situation even though you don't move is probably related to the general problems with fall damage desyncing. See especially MCPE-126454.

I cannot reproduce this in 1.20.70.20 Preview. I believe it is fixed by the fix for MCPE-126454.

As far as I know fall damage is based on the total distance fallen, not the speed at which you hit the ground. So I think this may be working as intended. However, there are other reports that sound similar to this one (
MCPE-120695,MCPE-109846) that connect the issue to the fall damage bug(s) that began in 1.16.100.Originally that was tracked at
MCPE-105490but since the reported fix for that was not effective we now have several separately-confirmed reports:MCPE-109937MCPE-120140MCPE-120277MCPE-122780That being said, I am not sure how to test this particular report, because falling happens too fast for me to reliably use the trident at the right time to make sure I wouldn't take fatal fall damage even if the "exected result" occured. It would help to have a video of the bug happening.
I think it is
MCPE-109846specificallyOk thanks, the video linked on that ticket is helpful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8N3OeNncBcM
I was able to reproduce it after seeing the video.
so, basically this is the bug: trident bug.mp4

and this is the expected behavior: expected.mp4
I have just died on 1.20.80 from using a Riptide trident in survival around cloud height. My totem triggered in midair and I fell straight down. I don't have the clip, or I would attach it. This bug is still present on 1.20.80+.
