This ticket will be used to track all reports of incorrect fall damage beginning in 1.16.100. Fall damage has been reported to occur at random times, or connected to events like
- flying
- teleporting
- opening shulker boxes.
- getting out of boats
However, there is also an issue in 1.16.100 where invisible mobs can attack the player (MCPE-71243). Before commenting below, please try to confirm that you actually experienced fall damage. You would see a message about death from falling after you respawn.

This issue will be difficult to test until MCPE-105490 is fixed.
There is a bug where you can experience fall damage unexpectedly, even when you are only 1 block off the ground (MCPE-105490). It would be helpful if you could make the bug happen again.
If by spiral you mean the small white cube with eyes, I have not experienced this behaviour, so maybe a mod can take a look at this. I suspect this is due to MCPE-71243; in this case, the purple shulker shell being the "ghost" while the "spiral" is the actual location of the shulker. It is possible that both of these are "ghosts", and the shulker is invisible somewhere else, which is why it does not see you and shoot.
This may also explain why you died. The server knows that there is no shulker there, so the server thinks that you are floating in the air and tries to force you to land on the ground. The client tells the server your on-screen "floating" location, and this repeats, until the server lands you on the ground and causes you to die from falling for a long time.

Yeah Skaijie. It seems that fall damage is handled server-side now, and due to general server lag along with MCPE-65094, it looks like this is a likely cause of MCPE-105490. Apparently this can even happen on the featured servers when walking down stairs (tested on Hive Treasure Wars), which is a place where server authoritative movement looks to be turned off.

It is very difficult to see what is going on from the video since it does not show the entire screen.
Did you levitate up into the ceiling so your head was in the block? If so, that is MCPE-109925.
What message was shown when you died? If it said you fell from a high place that is MCPE-105490.

The videos attached by @Todd Makrucki ( [^ScaffoldingFallDamage.wmv] [^ScaffoldingJustHurt.wmv] ) do not show the bug reported here, because there is no actual fall taking place. They just show fall damage occur while using scaffolding. That is probably either an example of of MCPE-105490, or a result of the "Server Authoritative Movement" setting on BDS.
The bug reported here is shown after first jump in this video: Landing on scaffolding bug.mp4
In the first jump I hold the jump button (spacebar on PC) from the time I jump until I reach the top of the scaffolding. I take fall damage only after reaching the top. If you release the jump button before reaching the top you take damage when you release the jump button.
I cannot reproduce taking fall damage when falling into scaffolding while holding the sneak button. That must have been a misunderstanding with the original repro steps.

Please put only one bug report in each ticket. It is very difficult to keep track of bugs when they are not in their own tickets.
However, please review the Bug Tracker Guidelines before creating new reports. Be sure to search for an existing issue as it is likely to have already been reported.
Please also be sure that you have updated to version 1.16.210 as the fall damage issue is reported as fixed in that version (MCPE-105490). The issue with catching on fire when near lava has also been reported already.

Possibly caused by the fix to MCPE-105490
Relates to MCPE-105490.
It is not clear whether MCPE-105490 was actually fixed in 1.16.210. However, a similar fall damage issue (MCPE-109937) notes that that bug does not cause fall damage in 1.16.220.50 beta, so it should be checked if this bug (which is basically a symptom of MCPE-105490) is actually mostly fixed in 1.16.220.50 instead.
Based on the previous comment this used to be related to or blocked by MCPE-105490. Now it is not caused by incorrect fall damage calculation.

I would not die or take fall damage when I teleported.
Notes: This is a partial repost of MCPE-105490. None of the linked reports there were helpful.
This does work with both command blocks and direct /tp command.
Earlier reports of items disappearing after death were linked to MCPE-48370, which was supposed to be fixed by changes to fall damage and item drop handling in 1.16.100.
That fix has apparently caused ongoing issues with client-server disagreement about the player’s position and falling state reported at MCPE-105490, MCPE-109937, MCPE-120140, MCPE-120277, and MCPE-122780. This report seems to describe client-server disagreement about the position of dropped items.
As far as I know fall damage is based on the total distance fallen, not the speed at which you hit the ground. So I think this may be working as intended. However, there are other reports that sound similar to this one (MCPE-120695, MCPE-109846) that connect the issue to the fall damage bug(s) that began in 1.16.100.
Originally that was tracked at MCPE-105490 but since the reported fix for that was not effective we now have several separately-confirmed reports:
MCPE-109937
MCPE-120140
MCPE-120277
MCPE-122780
That being said, I am not sure how to test this particular report, because falling happens too fast for me to reliably use the trident at the right time to make sure I wouldn't take fatal fall damage even if the "exected result" occured. It would help to have a video of the bug happening.
noob1884: the things you are describing are not this bug. They are variations of the random fall damage that they was first tracked at MCPE-105490 and is now tracked at MCPE-120140.
The issue tracked on this report is not related to random fall damage or desyncing player Y position. The issue tracked here occurs when you are genuinely falling and catch hold of scaffolding by holding the jump button, just as you can do with ladders and vines.

I know it MCPE-105490 but it's still won't fix, I jump when tp using command block and then i jump, i die by hit ground to hard or fell from high place

It the video you take damage 3 times, for several hearts each time.
Could you test and see if the amount of damage depends on your present Y-level?
Does whether you get lifted up by the shulker box depend on how close you are to it?
I haven’t been able to recreate this but the shulker box lifted me up even though I was not on it. I think that there may be a desync with the player collision box and the world around it. I have also experienced random suffocation by blocks and random swim noises by water.
@GoldenHelmet It seems that it picks you up when you are facing south and hugging the side of it.
There seem to be a number of fall damage issues with desync as an underlying cause:
MCPE-107084MCPE-106432MCPE-107033MCPE-107389Have also experienced fall damage midair when elytra disables, or when sneaking over a tall chamber (even when water is present at the bottom). These two were experienced on Realms (I rarely play survival in singleplayer).

I'm having this issue, but when using /tp to teleports players to distant Y coordinates. For example, teleporting an a player from y=90 to y=30 and vice-versa.

I have had this issue slightly in the past, but this was the worst encounter.
I noticed that it happened when I hit the edge of a chunk border (approx 800, y, -12)
I have been having this problem. Almost every time I teleport someone to me the die from fall damage.
I have also taken fall damage when using items at world build limit.
I threw an ender pearl at y=400 while gliding and died from fall damage, though I don't know if that was a bug or just me facing downwards while flying.
Yep, same thing happened to me. I posted this on a new issue but a mod let me know there was a main ticket and to add info here. It's lengthy lol, but here it is:
So I was on my horse and we carefully strolled down a hill and when I got to the water, I placed a boat down and I was going to ride my horse in the boat so we'd both be in there so we could travel back home. I placed the boat down, and it disappeared. I got off my horse to see where the boat went. A couple seconds pass, my game freeezes, then bam: "You died." Didn't say why, nothing about how much XP I had (a lot.) I just randomly died? And then because I broke my bed (I was traveling with a full inventory of valuables so I needed to sleep) I respawned thousands of blocks away in both directions. When I respawned, I checked the chat and it says that I fell from a high place? But I was literally on the ground in front of the water for a pretty solid amount of time. Plus my horse doesn't take fall damage for some reason and I had been riding that horse for the past half hour? I've never reported a bug before, can this be fixed? I don't want to cheat and teleport because then achievements will get turned off but I'll be really bummed if all of my stuff despawned

julia louise, the item despawn timer only ticks when the items are within a rendered chunk (which if you were far enough away, isn't loaded).
Yup, even pillaring up causes huge fall damage. After about 30 blocks high using leaves or gravel it'll smack you for 8 hearts damage even though nothing is hitting the player, as others have said ender pearls also have killed me from phantom fall damage.
I think this is probably the same glitch as how blocks don't break when mining. Some sort of a desync.

Also, my friend takes damage when moving up and down on ladders I believe.
One thing that I noticed about flying with mayfly is that the game thinks you are on the ground and in the air at the same. Whenever you fly over an item, it will pick it up and when someone else looks at you, they seem to bounce up and down really fast. Also hovering over the void will cause you to die.
So i'm using a trident using Riptide 3 over an ocean i fly up gonna fall down into the ocean and bam die in midair and loose all my stuff. If that isn't incorrect fall damage idk what is.

In my SSP world, I always have suffocating damages while standing and opening on shulker boxes. Maybe it's because I have a full set of netherite armors with Feather Falling IV, each time I just lose half heart for falling damage.
I experienced this when I was in the nether I took a potion of fire resistance and jumped into lava and died from fall damage
It happened to me, with a boat, I threw myself into a ravin and I died, then I decided to experiment and indeed, it hurt me, it is very frustrating, I hope they fix it.
I was flying around with my riptide III trident then I randomly die
The fix for this appears to have caused other fall damage issues, such as fall damage while pillaring upwards.
I still experience fall damage when I teleport down say from Y=64 to Y=28
Recommending reopen as there are still reports of incorrect fall damage in 1.16.210.
Definitely still happens in 1.16.210 realms. Reopen this report asap.
Issue not resolved. Happens randomly, not consistent but is still killing our players.
