Blocks can only be placed in a straight line and at 1 direction when holding the right click button.
If you hold the right click button, blocks start placing, but you can only place them in a straight line and one direction(not the band, the real direction), if you move the cursor somewhere else, it doesn't place it. Here I have a screenshot of torches which i could only place to the left side and in a straight line

It pains me to resolve this since I strongly dislike this behavior, but sadly it is intended (MCPE-30610)
The bug
In bedrock edition, blocks can only be placed in a straight line when holding right-click, moving the crosshair elsewhere will result in nothing happening (MCPE-30610).
Blocks placed in this way that orient themselves based on the clicked face, such as logs, end up facing the wrong way.

It seems that when you crouch while the game is attempting to place a block it'll break the "block chain" (a quirk where block placing is locked into a straight line after placing 2 blocks - MCPE-30610)

However, this issue works as intended.
Per Helen Angel, this was an intentional change to avoid a recurrent bug. It also makes it easier to place blocks in straight lines, because you don't have to switch to a tool and break misplaced blocks as you go. For more information, see https://www.reddit.com/r/MCPE/comments/7gwbby/holding_rightclick_will_only_fill_blocks_on_the/.
If you want to ask the developers to reconsider this change, you can make your request at the feedback site.
This behavior makes it impossible to do something like fill in a floor without clicking individually for each block. Hopefully this will be reconsidered if the underlying "recurring" bug that was mentioned was fixed
This might be work as intended and I know why this is a thing but it'd be good if we could go back to the old system pre-1.2.5
Still hoping this gets reopened. Quite a few blocks no longer have this issue, such as walls, scaffolding, carpets, redstone, torches, rails, etc as of 1.16
