Classic skins in skin packs are not saved when you reload the game
When you exit and reload the game, any characters in your profile that are based on classic skins from a Marketplace or custom skin pack are deleted. This doesn't happen for characters imported from a skin file.
Note: In my own testing on Windows 10, skins from Marketplace packs work correctly, but there are additional reports saying Marketplace skin packs have the same problem..
I have attached a sample skin pack that can be used to reproduce the issue.
Steps to reproduce:
- Download the attached skin pack and double-click to install it in Minecraft.
- On the main menu, select Profile.
- Select any character, then click Edit Character.
- Select the Classic Skins (2nd) tab.
- Expand the Owned section. It should contain the Sample Skin Pack.
- Choose any skin from the Sample Skin Pack.
- Back out to the main menu. The selected skin should appear as your current skin.
- Exit Minecraft and restart it.
Expected results:
Your current skin is the one you selected from the Sample Skin Pack.
Actual results:
Your current skin has been replaced with one of the defaults (Steve or Alex). If you open the Profile, the skin you selected is no longer saved in any character slot. The skin pack is still available on the Classic Skins tab, however.

Can anyone confirm if this is still an issue in the 1.14.20 hotfix?
The description of MCPE-55278, which is fixed in this update, seems similar enough to me that I suspect these could have had the same or related causes. I have just tested opening the game without internet connection and was greeted by a strange error message and my custom and downloaded skins being unavailable. I was able to still choose the unloadable skin slots in character creator, exit, and play in a world, with my appearance reverting to Alex or Steve. After exiting Minecraft, reconnecting internet, and reloading, all of my skins/characters came back. So, I am thinking this issue is partially fixed. This was on Windows 10 pc.
Confirmed, this is the exact issue I am having on Xbox One and Android but with official Mojang skin packs from the Marketplace.
I tested this quite a lot and couldn't get it to fail with a Marketplace skin pack in Windows 10. Could you please let us know the name of your pack, and verify that you're using 1.13.0?
Yes, I can again verify that I've been on 1.13.0. It's the Minecraft Skin Pack 1, and the skin says Limited Usage which is incorrect.
Edit: I should clarify that this has been an issue specifically on Android and Xbox One since the 1.13 update. Version 1.14 for Android seems to fix the problem with skins resetting.
Is this related to MCPE-53398? It seems like the same behavior. Especially if the underlying issue is the game trying to verify something online (through the Microsoft account?) and not being able to for locally saved packs.
