Tile entities in a chunk can lose their data when the chunk is loaded
When loaded, tile entities in a chunk can lose their data. This usually fixes itself if the player leaves that chunk alone, but sometimes if the player interacts with the chunk it can stay that way. I assume this has something to do with the game failing to load it properly.
The game crashes when you attempt to move these tile entities with missing data. This also seems to be locational and certain chunks aren't affected.
This is different to the bug where they turn invisible, as in that bug you lose the ability to interact with them.
Also, the game seems to create new tile entities when the old ones go missing.
Steps to reproduce (on Missing tile entity data.mcworld
):
- go to the overworld and back again until the tile entities lose their data
- try to interact with the tile entities

Possibly related to the fix for MCPE-78279 in 1.16.0.64 beta.
Thanks for noticing the coordinates. However, even if it’s across a chunk border, the symptoms here are different than MCPE-52790. That bug has not been reported since 1.16 released, so I think was finally fixed with the fix for MCPE-78279. With that bug, the data for the contents of chests were lost. With this bug it seems that the chest contents are not lost, there is just an error with the blocks updating.
@Angus Miller: does the chest in the screenshot span Z = 351 to Z = 352?
Resolving as Fixed based on comments from June and receiving no further comments or reports confirming the issue since 1.16.0 released.
The issue tracked here after the original fix in 1.14.0 was probably finally fixed by the fix for MCPE-78279.
There is a new issue in 1.16.100 where half of a double chest can become invisible, which is tracked at MCPE-106030.
Digest and analysis of original description by [Mod] GoldenHelmet:
Block data in the affected world shifted +64 Y resulting in the following problems:
- Double chests changed to single chests
- Chest contents wiped
- Item frames wiped
- Banners changed to solid gray/black
- Beds all turned red
- Dragon head block changed to a skeleton skull
- Wither skeleton skull blocks changed to skeleton skulls
- Potions in cauldrons changed to water
- Armor stands and minecarts have disappeared
- Pets and animals suffocated
- Blocks pushed by sticky pistons no longer retract (compare MCPE-111632)
- Returning from the nether through a nether portal puts player inside solid blocks underground.
All of these effects are easily explained by the fact that entity and tile entity position data did not change with block data. The game therefore created or "read" default or <data: 0> state/contents for blocks that should have tile entity data (e.g. empty chests and item frames, red beds, normal skeleton skulls)--compare MCPE-78279. Entities ended up relatively 64 blocks lower, mostly inside solid blocks. The armor stands and minecarts should be able to be found underground.
If you read this read everything, you might just help... That is for the other people not mojang. These are for mojang and the other people. When i updated my game i went into my favorite world to get new blocks, but i saw the double chests were not double chests anymore, they single chests put next to each other, i then went to check my other chests, when i opened it it was wiped all my chests are wiped, basically all i have left is the items in my inventory the decorated banners are now grayish black, item frames that had items on them are wiped, my world's Y coordinate was in the 60s it's now in the 130s, all my pets suffocated, infact i think all the animals in the world suffocated, the Y coordinate change must have suffocated my pets and all the animals on my world, the dragon head on my world is now an skeleton skull, blocks in front of sticky pistons no longer stick when the sticky piston is activated, unless you break the block(s) in front of the sticky piston(s) and replace it, the minecarts, gone. Signs are wiped (no letters on them), I went into the nether portal to check if it's alright, and yes, it's perfectly fine, but, when i went back, i found my self stuck in bedrock, on the Y coordinate 50 my beds, are from the color they used to be to red, oh, and the wither skulls i placed are also skeleton skulls now so, if you ask me, i think all the heads in minecraft that is placed in players worlds on the 1.16.230.54 version of minecraft (which is the one this huge bug is created on) are now, skeleton skulls. Potions in cauldrons are now water placed armor stands, with armor, or items, are gone idk if there's more, but, if someone reads this, go and test it, and then comment on this and add stuff that is also corrupted, and mojang, fix this as quickly as possible i will have to delete my 488mb world, unless you can recover all of my stuff which i doubt you can do, if it's not recovered, i will delete my world, and start all over, and next time, test the update, before launching it, pls.. Like for this type of problem.. Pls, Fix it as soon as possible. I just forgot to take an screen shot of the wither skull - skeleton skull, I'm not gonna do that, I'm not supposed to be on my phone right now, i have limited time now, and if someone had wither skeleton skulls on their worlds, and updated to the 1.16.230.54 version of minecraft, go and check if it's skeleton skulls, and comments on this, same with the other heads. Sorry for the typos if there is... There is alot of screen shots, and 1 screen recording.
From MCPE-124552:
Block data in affected worlds has shifted +64 Y resulting in the following problems:
- Double chests changed to single chests
- Chest empty
- Item frames empty
- Banners changed to solid gray/black
- Beds all turned red
- Mob heads all changed to skeleton skulls
- Potions in cauldrons changed to water
- Armor stands and minecarts disappeared/buried underground
- Pets and animals suffocated/stuck in caves underground
- Blocks pushed by sticky pistons no longer retract (compare MCPE-111632)
- Returning from the nether through a nether portal puts player inside solid blocks underground.
All of these effects are explained by the fact that entity and tile entity position data did not change with block data. Character inventory is ok. Chest inventories are empty. All double wide chests now display as 2 sperate chests. Random clouds appear on the ground as if parts of the world are not loading, but if I walk through the walls the environment is loaded, just not the inventory in chests.
Broken after the update on 8/25/2021. Worked fine 8/24/2021.
Apparently this affects 1.14 as well.
This looks linked to
MCPE-52790I do not have permissions to link them.
Is there a different setup to make it trigger in 1.14? I adjusted the test world to load in 1.14 and went back and forth through the portal about 15 times without losing the tile entity data.
I've never experienced in 1.14. Maybe it got worse in 1.16 or something changed which made it happen more frequently.
RIP my command driven automatic shop based on XP.
77Tigers - In the providxed test world, I noticed that when travelling through the portal, I would sometimes generate in the blocks below - do you know of any reason why that might be the case? Was the portal moved after it was initially created? This might help to reproduce the issue at
MCPE-28765.We see invisible non functional chests about 1-2 times a week on a server of 15-20 people. in 1. 14.3 we saw 1 or 2 times a months. in 1.13 we saw it 2 times ever.
When it was 1 or 2 times ever we didnt really care. But in the last month we have lost something like 200 shulkers and 50 double chests, a few conduits, countless beds and a mob cage. It has been getting worse withe every update. We are trying to get a catalog of when and where this has happens in our worlds. We have seen impacts to every single tile entity at some point or another in 1.14.6. but i have yet to force it to happen. Right now i have a script logging me in and out at one location in 1.14.6, but that is not forcing the issue.
One note is we only recently saw it in the nether when we asked a user to log out in the nether as part of testing. in the save file the "tile entities" category is just gone for the chunk.
This issue didn't happen for me for some reason when I made a redstone clock in the chunk with a piston attached.
(and no, I didn't move the portal, I've encountered that issue as well though)
what do you mean a redstone watch? explain me better please
@HostGui he means a clock circuit
https://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Mechanics/Redstone/Clock_circuit
One of my wild speculations here--
) where you can get the Overworld sky to appear in the End, presumably due to travelling back to the end too quickly while the overworld is still loading (
I wonder if the issue is that when travelling between dimensions the game somehow loads the tile entity data for the corresponding chunk from the wrong dimension? That would be kind of like another bug I just confirmed (my kids repro'd it
MCPE-46865). You might be able to test this if you have a chunk that reliably reproduces the bug, by setting up matching tile entities with different contents at the same (unconverted) coordinates in the other dimension. It may be partially due to that, after a few hundred re-logs, (in 1.14.6) i did not get a repro, i will see if i can find a way to force myself to use a nether portal on loop. as this is a rare ish repro.
Note, i don't want to loose access to my 1.14.6 worlds or i would test in the beta as well. if a supported launcher was available i would be testing in the beta. but a 2+hour process to switch makes beta testing really an investment.
@GoldenHelmet
Is there any way to resolve this bug? I've touched several weeks without playing because it always clears the command blocks from my map, please help me there
@HostGui I am not aware of any workarounds other than what 77Tigers mentioned, leave a simple clock circuit running in the chunk. It could be that the redstone updating forces the game to load tile data at a different point in the loading process than it normally would.
I would just like to add that this also happens when you teleport between 2 distant locations, so the dimension thing seems unlikely.
