Iron golems spawn too often
Iron Golem spawn rates seemed to be messed up. On my server which was previously 1.13.2 I have a village of 35 villagers, there are 15+ Iron golems and they are still spawning. Normally I wouldn't consider this a problem, however most of them stand in the town square by the bell and do nothing useful.

This is a game breaking bug for me, it's apparently been around for nearly 7 years too, as searching for the issue will return results from 7 years ago... Doesn't seem they're every going to fix this which is a shame because it ruins the game for those of us that want villages, and not the simple minded people who just want "iron farms". I can safely say that until it gets fixed I won't be playing anymore, which sucks because I've been playing Minecraft since 09. Time to find something else to do with my spare time.

I still have this issue in 1.14.4, I only have 10 villagers in my village, they keep spawning iron golem even though there are already more than 10 iron golems in the village.

For the issue in 1.14, see MC-149443
Probably more likely to duplicate MC-145758 (which is fixed already) instead of MC-145863 (both of those are marked as related, but not duplicates)?
I found it worth mentioning that it is updated villagers from 1.13, not new ones (which seem to be ok) and they all started doing that without any prior interaction after the update.
If it is indeed the same issue as MC-145758, then it's all good, tho ![]()
For the golems, MC-145766 also is marked as fixed already, but MC-149443 is not - they are also shown as related, but not duplicates.

Depending on the circumstances, 12 villagers and 6 golems is a completely acceptable ratio. Every time when a villager is scared (as in, they see a zombie), they'll try to spawn an iron golem if they haven't seen one in a while (and if some more conditions are met). If that happened often to your villagers, that's how it's intended to work.
I therefore consider this not to be particularly buggy behaviour, especially in comparison with previous tickets about the amount of iron golems (for instance, MC-149443). Instead, this is more of a balancing issue, which I would classify as a feature request.

Optifine, as opposed to popular opinion, is NOT just a mod that changes the visuals/performance of the game. It changes more than that. We generally do not accept any tickets which have been reported when using mods since we can never be sure whether an issue is caused by the mod or not, until actually testing it in vanilla.
I'm afraid that we can't accept this as a valid ticket even if you're not using any mods, as iron golems spawn quite often if a villager doesn't see one in a while, and that is intentional. There used to be a bug prior to 1.14.3 (MC-149443) that caused golems to spawn too often, but that has been fixed. Perhaps the golems in your world are a remainder of that.
There's also MC-148955, which causes golems to spawn inside of non-solid blocks.
This is supposed to be fixed in MC-149443, but it is still affecting the latest release. Steps to reproduce:
1. Cure 2 zombie villagers in a designated area with 13 beds and 13 working sites (all professions)
2. Trade and offer potatoes to meet breeding criteria
3. Stay out in a night to have few zombies scare the villagers, so that Iron Golems can spawn
4. After a few days, you are getting the result of the uploaded screenshots. 13 villagers which is the expected and desired from the bed population, but more than 35 Iron Golems!?!?
During this test scenario you will also meet the other issues reported, like some villagers are acquiring the same job site (MC-150806) and the Iron Golems are stuck on the same spot (MCPE-49607). Please to fix as it is very irritating.

Can confirm - the Golem "Gossip" criteria doesn't seem to take into account the presence of existing Iron Golems. I have an elevated village with 14 golems and 20 Villagers.
This also affects worlds created in 1.14. On our brand new server world we have a village at spawn and after about 48 hours, of which the server has been empty a lot as well, the village is now overrun by hordes of iron golems.
I can absolutely confirm this happens. Seems to be exponential as you increase the village size. I have over 25 iron golems that spawned naturally from villages. Worse yet, they all seem to stay in one section of the village.
Added a screenshot with amount of iron golems in small part of spawn village after less than 24 hour hours since a big purge. This is putting a lot of stress on the server, which was noticeable after the purge yesterday when the lag situation got a lot better. RAM and CPU usage is really high even without anyone on the server, wich I'm, possibly falsely, blaming on the golem spawning.
I have a fresh world made in 1.14. The village I made had 1 spawned villager per different type of workstation. It has spawned 31 iron golems and 9 other villagers on it's own within 11 hours of game play. I have no lag issues, But when tring to farm, open a door, chop a tree, or mine if you accidentally clock a golem your dead. And that is annoying. They don't seem to fan out so I am in I guess you would say arms length of one at any one time,
Yeah, my current count is at 20 golems to 38 villagers. Glad they haven't been as aggressive as previous versions. When I've accidentally hit a golem only the one golem attacked me. Though it was handy to have them all swarm around me to protect me from phantoms
+1
~17 golems for less than 40 villagers
I haven't found a workaround in any of the bug reports :/
I can confirm this bug. I made a new world in 1.14 and spawned near a village.
I build a few beds and now after a few days i got over 10 golems in my village. This bug doesnt seem fully fixed yet.
Can confirm that this is still an issue, despite all of the "resolved cases". I have a 1.13 world converted to 1.14, with a village that was generated during 1.14 pre-release. My village has approximately 40 villagers and probably about 40+ iron golems with no end in sight. I might even have more golems than villagers now. And they are still actively spawning. They are mostly congregating in one area so I'm looking to design a no-contact trap in that area (and close it off to my villagers) to farm their iron without angering my villagers. They are even spawning inside my bigger buildings and I have to break them out of them.
Is this still an issue in 1.14.1?
For me, yes it is. I killed them all off but i already have at least six of them again.
This mat be a problem in multiplayer but I think it's awesome to have more iron golems in single player. If Mojang changes it I hope they change it solely in multiplayer as more golems make it easier to defend my villagers.
Still an issue for me in 1.14.1. Have a village of approximately 20 villagers, pruned it down to 3 golems, waited a day, saw two more.
It IS a relatively large village, and the housing portion is condensed in one segment, so I'm not sure if it's simply golems wandering outside village boundaries, thus causing a recheck to see no golem or if it simply doesn't reset the need value.
Confirmed for 1.14.1 (single-player world on linux mint 19 tara) – I had 12+ iron golems until I started killing them off; it seems as if a new iron golem spawns each game-day, regardless of how many are currently present in the area. Iron golems are also grouping together instead of wandering around. (Note: this world was created in 1.13.x and updated to 1.14.1.)
From the old post
MC-145766-> My world is from 1.13.2 converted via 19w07a and each snapshot after that. In the big village (in that I added beds, working places and bell, ) I built traps to reduce the number of golems. Hundreds of Golems have been killed by these. Now I made a new test in 1.14.1 with the big village in that are 120 beds and working places, 4 bells and nearly 200 villagers (never count them all before): I used the command /kill in LAN mode to kill all 77 golems and stayed for 2 real time hours in the middle of the village. Then I kill all the new 42 golems und run the game for another 4 hours: 72 new Golems and in the traps are 30 red flowers and 100 iron bares.
I think that this is much better as before in the 1.14, but there should be a maximum limit for iron golems per village.
And is anywhere a guide for the best way converting a 1.13 village to a 1.14 village?
Two another test with 1.14.2 Preview 1 and with deactivated golem traps: Nearly the same as before -> after 3 and 4 hours real time the golem rise to 71 / 73 in the big village nearby with about 195 Villagers. And the the count of golems (and villagers) seems to stay at that level. As I wrote in the post before: Much better than in the 1.14
but a general limit for each city should be add...
I've been having problems with golems for years.
*Overpopulating in large player-built cities.
*Too large to fit through tight spaces.
*Colliding with eachother * blocking paths.
*Constantly getting stuck on top of fences & walls.
*Loitering on farmland.
*Always in your way when you're building.
*Completely unnecessary in Creative.
Yeah, they are still everywhere. They also tend to gather and block paths. They need to be spread somehow. or, each village should count...like...1golems for 8 villagers, etc. this way, farms are ok, and manmade villages will be okay too.
Mine are getting stuck in the ground with half their bodies sticking out, or with their heads/bodies stuck in floors and ceilings. Still, way too many in a village. I've tried to trade with a villager that is stuck in the middle of a bunch of golems and accidentally hit one. Plus, my game starts to lag. Sticking with the 16-bit theory of the game, 1 golem for every 16 villagers sounds reasonable.
We've been dumping our golems in a lake, it's gotten a little bit crazy
I've managed to accidentally set up a campfire it a good spot so the crush of golems eventually forced them on to the fire. So know my overpopulation is a significant source of infinite iron.
Looks like I need to add another occurrence of this, because it's still a thing. This is a 1.14 multi-player survival world created the day of release. I didn't get my "marketplace" created until after 1.14.1 though. Currently have 13 villagers, which was all I was going to do, so I expected maybe a single golem. Instead, the number of golems has increased over several game days to a whopping 10. Villager:golem ratio of 13:10 seems a tad high lol. I assume this is due to the "gossip" mechanic? It's an intentionally small 35x35 structure, walled for their protection. It's extremely cramped with so many golems. I have no easy means to eliminate the golems. I'm not admin so will have to figure something else out, because I suspect this is starting to affect server performance over the course of many in-game days and intentionally started raids. I'll add a screenshot or two after the admin updates us to 1.14.2.
I've been having a similar issue, where my village used to have about 2-4 golems and i thought that was kind of strange. Now it has almost 20 and it's still going up. Probably has something to do with golem spawning mechanics and villager gossip
So my village is spawning a lot of Golems around 100 right now. To give context my village is in the spawn chunks of the map. There are around 30 villagers in my village.
I also have an issue. It was a brand new 1.14 world, and just the other day I used the kill command (in version 1.14.2) and had 138 golems. I came back just a couple minutes later and saw at least 5 new ones.
In my world, I only have this problem in villages with large delta-Y. The golems spawn near sea-level and then congregate (along with villagers) on hill-tops. The lowlands are nearly vacant, and the hill-tops are packed.
I still have this issue in 1.14.3, where six villagers in my house keep spawning new golems (this happened just after I updated to 1.14.3 from 1.14.2) there are so many golems now, that it lags whenever I go near my house.
I'm running a 1.14.3 server, and it keeps spawning Iron Golems in my village.
This is still an issue in 1.14.3, I had to kill 50 golems in a village with less than 20 villagers
