Created Issue:
Fog stutters when viewed from void
The Bug:
Sky fog appears to stutter when looking up from the void.
Reproduction Steps:
- Enable clouds (for easier visibility)
- Create a fully air superflat world
- Fall into the void (probably Y < 0)
- Look at the clouds and move
→Notice how the fog on the clouds stutters
Environment
Bundled Java Executable, Windows 10

I think it partially does but not the screenshots where the fog sharply cuts off and takes up about 55% of the screen (and also not the part where the sky fog moves by itself even if you aren't moving, but I'm sure that is part of MC-227139 despite it not being mentioned explicitly).
Edit: Never mind, the gradual movement of fog on its own is actually a separate bug caused by the movement of the clouds, as opposed to MC-227139 which is caused by the player crossing chunk boundaries. I split that into a separate ticket though which is MC-261737.
Sky fog gradually moves over time with the clouds. If you are still and watch the fog of the clouds, the fog will move slowly over time. The fog shouldn't be moving at all if the player isn't moving.
A similar thing causing choppy fog movement is caused by when the distance the clouds have travelled is the width of a chunk, still when the player isn't moving. it causes something similar to MC-227139, though that is caused by the player crossing chunk boundaries primarily, since the sky fog jumps sharply when the player crosses a chunk boundary
In the attached video, both the smooth movement over time when the player isn't moving and the jump when it crosses a chunk border are shown, but this isn't the same bug as MC-227139 because that is caused by the PLAYER crossing chunk boundaries. This bug is fundamentally different and is caused by the cloud fog being tied to the movement of the clouds themself, not the movement of the player relative to the chunk.
This is the same issue as MC-227139, just with different steps to reproduce it. The over-arching issue here is fog appears to stutter in relating to clouds, whether that be through the player moving, or not. Seeing as MC-227139 is already confirmed, and has many marked affected versions, it would be much more valuable to include the information from this issue into the other rather than splitting the same issue into two different reports and relating them.
Confirmed. Decrease render distance for easier reproduction.
This is caused by both when YOU cross a chunk boundary and when the clouds have travelled a total of 16 blocks. The jumps happen even when the player doesn't move after so long. It seems like the fog is partially tied to the chunk rather than the player and also partially tied to cloud's movement.
Wait, this bug is essentially reporting on the fact that the fog is tied to the chunk. Smooth movement of the clouds is a separate issue caused by the fog being tied to the smooth movement of the clouds. I will make a separate report for sky fog gradually moving over time if I can't find one.
Confirmed in 1.20-pre4.
