Nether portal doesn't fully break when one or more blocks are destroyed
When punching a nether portal block inside of a nether portal frame, the portal blocks did not disappear.
What I expected to happen was...:
for the nether portal blocks to disappear.
What actually happened was...:
Just that one single block was destroyed, but the other parts remained active, and did not disappear.
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Create a nether portal of any size.
2. Enter the nether portal.
3. Attempt to destroy the naturally spawned nether portal by "punching" the nether portal block, not the obsidian.

It does, however, disappear when the obsidian is broken, whether or not the obsidian is touching the portal blocks.
Unable to reproduce.
Also unable to reproduce.
I could reproduce it, I made a huge nether portal, and when i walked through and broke the one in the nether it just turned the adjacent portal block 90 degrees
Confirmed. Only happens in the Nether.
Confirmed over world latest snapshot.
It happened in survival (13w39b) when I was standing right next to a portal and a Ghast's fireball killed me.
I just ran into this myself in 1.7.1 on OS 10.8.5. It seems to happen specifically with game generated portals only, and only on their initial generation. The original description is accurate and it can happen either in the Overworld or Nether.
Steps to reproduce in creative:
1. Create a portal.
2. Walk through.
3. Turn around and try to break it.
Steps to reproduce in creative in Overworld.
1. Create a portal.
2. Walk through.
3. Either have devised a device that puts the portal out (I had a rapid portal toggler going when I did it.) or have someone else join game and put the portal out, or I suppose walking a ways away such that a new portal in the nether wouldn't link to the original portal in the overworld might work also... in which case, build a new portal far away in the nether...
4. Come back through into the overworld, which causes the generation of a new portal.
5. Turn around and try to break it.
In both cases only the one pane of the portal breaks, the rest remain and occasionally one of them will turn 90 degrees sideways, depending on the original orientation of the portal.
If you break all the portal parts and then relight the portal, then it functions properly on future breaks. You cannot relight the portal until all it's portal blocks are broken.
Is this reproducible in any way in survival?
I don't think so. It isn't possible to break portal blocks by hand in survival.
I tried breaking the portal in survival using water poured directly onto it and the entire portal broke correctly. I'm not sure how else to break a portal directly in survival.
@ [Mod] Ezekiel:
It happened twice while I was playing survival. First time the portal was partially broken by a ghast as shown in the screenshot. The second time it was partially broken by a creeper explosion.
ok, thanks
Confirmed it's still an issue - just happened in 1.7.4. I'm not sure what made it break, but it's 66% broken.

The portal still works and is persistent (returning to the overworld -> nether it's still like that). This is running in survival on a vanilla server from Mojang. I've not restarted the server to see if that restores it to a stable state. I've backed up the files in case that will help with debugging.
This is on Linux, both client and server and happens in survival mode. I should have checked all the information at the top before I added my previous comment. My apologies - first interaction with Mojang's bug tracker.
it happened to me while testing in 14w08a. I made a huge portal, and a creeper destroyed the bottom half of the portal. The top half did not disappear afterwards.
Confirmed for 14w10c
Yep, creeper did it to me in survival mode in 14w11b with a standard size portal. For some reason it also causes a heart of damage when I return to the partial portal from the nether, and I can't relight the missing portal blocks.
Confirmed for 14w17a.
If you destroy the blocks around you, the portal just 'dies' fine.
But if you can destroy the portal block that your head is standing in, you can destroy a portal block .
Confirmed for 14w18b
Confirmed for 14w19a.
Snap 14w19a – Ghast fireballed portal and only this one block remained, and it was rotated 90 deg. Was able to die and return with flint and steel and reactivate portal. Screenshot uploaded as 2014-05-08_22.18.45.png
Confirmed for 14w20b.
Confirmed for 14w21b.
Fixed in 14w25b.
