Player invisible on servers
Player will randomly become invisible on servers.
Even if they are wearing armor the other players can't see them. Particles generated by the invisible players (fall damage, hearth, potion effects, etc.) are invisible too.
When you are affected by the bug, you can't see your armor points and you don't any of your sounds (fall damage, taking damage, burning, etc.). You are also immune to melee damage dealt by other players, but you still take damage from arrows although you don't get knocked back. Spectators can not teleport to invisible players and boats used by invisible players will act strangely.
The only known way to fix it is by having the player to relog or kill him.
The bug is about chunk loading on a server. If a player gets teleported in an unloaded chunk, he will become invisible most of the time. If you teleport another player in the same chunks as the first one, he won't be invisible because the chunks are loaded by the first player. If you teleport a player at least 1 tick in the spawn chunks and then teleport them somewhere else they won't become invisible. This could be used as a temporary fix for map-makers.

The smartest way to prevent becoming invisible is to always teleport to spawn chunks before teleporting anywhere else. The glitch is harder to activate in spawn chunks.

The bug
Players are removed from the list of loaded entities and the EntityTracker stops tracking them when they teleport out of non-spawn chunks which are not loaded afterwards anymore into currently unloaded chunks. This causes all kind of desynchronizations for the client and results in the @e selector not finding the player anymore (@a, @r and @p still do).
Desynchronization examples
- For any level of speed/slowness, it doesn't increase/decrease your walking speed, nor FOV and if you had speed or slowness before the glitch happens the speed/slowness will also stay after you clear it. (It won't show any particles or a tab in the GUI saying that you have the effect but your FOV is still increased/decreased and you still walk faster/slower)
- Invisibility doesn't work.
- Switching to spectator mode makes your head completely nontransparent (
MC-93377) and when switching from spectator to another makes you invisible. (MC-92324) - You don't take knockback from any damage. (
MC-98210) - You can't hear any damage sounds.
- Elytras won't work (
MC-89994) which might be the cause ofMC-90035. - Targeting with @e and @r[type=player] becomes unreliable. (
MC-100369) - If you have some armor equipped, then teleport, changing the armor values (changing, adding, removing) makes your armor points stay the same.
- Players will be invisible. (
MC-91236) - Potion effects are displayed incorrectly, went through a teleporter after getting absorption, and even after the absorption wore off minutes later, the particle effects from it were there.
- Health is displayed incorrectly, health-boost/absorption before teleporting, and extra hearts did not show after teleporting.
- Attack Indicator displays wrong animation (
MC-97169) - Main hand is always your right hand (
MC-142135) - Killing an entity with a bow and arrow will not count as the player's kill
- Player becomes stuck in bed

How to reproduce
The main steps are always
- Use setup steps provided for the specific reproduction case
- Teleport away from any chunks which remain loaded after you teleport, example: spawn chunks, chunks with other player, chunks with hoppers...
/tp ~ ~ ~100000
- Teleport away from these chunks making sure they get unloaded once you teleported
/tp ~ ~ ~100000
- Use reproduction steps provided for the specific reproduction case
Potion effects modifiers are not updated for client
Reproduction steps
- Give yourself speed or slowness which both modify the movement speed
/effect @p speed 10000 10 true - Walk around
→ You will notice that you walk with normal movement speed
Potion effect particles are not updated
Setup steps
- Give yourself for example night vision
/effect @p night_vision 1000 1
Reproduction steps
- Clear the potion effects
/effect @p clear
→ You will notice that the particles remain
Actions modifying flags value
The FLAGS data parameter stores the state for some entity states:
- burning
- sneaking
- sprinting
- invisible
- glowing
- elytra flying
Data parameters are managed by the EntityTracker and therefor the player will not receive the change. The highlighted states cause client side problems. "Invisible" includes switching from Spectator mode to Creative mode.
Setup steps
Switch to Spectator mode or give yourself the invisibility effect
/gamemode spectator
Reproduction steps
- Switch back to a different game mode
- Stand in fire
- Use the glowing effect
/effect @p glowing 1000 1 true - Use the invisibility effect
/effect @p invisibility 1000 1 true - Try using the elytra
Entity selector not finding player anymore
Reproduction steps
Use the following command
/say @e
Code analysis
Based on 1.11.2 decompiled using MCP 9.35 rc1
The problem is that the method net.minecraft.world.World.updateEntityWithOptionalForce(Entity, boolean) only updates the chunk an entity is in if the area around the entity is loaded, which causes other bugs like MC-81536 and might not be a good design as seen in MC-108469.
When the server then receives a CPacketPlayer packet before the area around the player is loaded correcting the chunk the player is in, the chunks were the player was before are unloaded. This makes the server then later remove the player from the list of loaded entities (Side note: but not loaded players) and causes the EntityTracker to stop tracking the player which means no data parameter changes are send to the player anymore.
Removing the condition for the area to be loaded could nearly completely solve this problem. It would however not solve the problem where entities teleported in unloaded chunks get lost.
The reason why it only "nearly completely" solves this is because it might still be possible that this happens when the CPacketPlayer packet is received and processed before the player is updated, which might be possible because packets are processed before players are updated.
This is a common glitch on 1.9 servers and if you want to know if your one of the invisible then some sound effects don't work. For example, falling in lava & jumping from a high place with that leg break sound doesn't work when your invisible. When we mean invisible we don't mean by the effect, but as in the fact no one can see you. The only way we can get people to get out of this state is if they re-log from the server. I have tested this on many different servers and different snapshots so the bug has been here a while and is real.
I have also seen this happen while making maps in the snapshots. Teleporting players large distances seems to trigger it for me. Multiple players will be teleported from one map to another and become invisible/intangible to others. The only solutions for me have been using /kill on the player (when they respawn they are fixed) or having them relog.
Yeah I forgot about that. Since Ao added particles quite a bit of invisible players has been killed and when they respawn they are visible.
This bug is still existent in 15w46a, Please update the affected versions.
Updated
The bug is still here in 16w03a.
Also some sounds don't work when you in the bug like fall damage and burning in lava.
That's right I forgot that.
Thanks for the help, if you find anything else, write it down in the comments and I'll add it to the post.
This is still a bug in 16w06a. Please update this thread regularly or it might not be fixed before 1.9.
This bug is currently in 16w07a as well. By the way I know how to replicate the bug. It has to deal with loading chunks on a server. If someone loads chunks by using TP command they will become invisible most of the time. If a second player teleports to the same chunks the first player is already at the second player will not become invisible because the first player is loading those chunks. That's all I know and I can replicate on my server very easily.
Thanks AoElite, I've updated the thread.
Still there in 1.9 pre-release. Hopefully they'll fix this before next week when the full release comes.
This affects 1.9 pre-release 2 too
While in this invisible state your also invulnerable to other player's damage.
Are you sure about that? I've killed many invisible players by clicking randomly in the air and throwing splash potion at them.
Everything does damage to them except melee combat from other players.
Weird. I used to be able to kill them with melee but I'll add it anyway. Could you just verify that please?
Oh and check if they can be hurt by arrows shot by other players.
In 1.9 pre-release 4 they changed something so now it will only occur if the player is teleported into whole new chunks.
I've made a video to show: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NLEH_Mzcm6w
please fix this before 1.9 is released, its been in 1.9 servers every since the snapshots started to come out.
Thank you for the video it's really helpful. I'll add it to the issue. You said that players become invisible when they are being teleported in unloaded chunks. So could you simply load a chunk with a Portal Gateway like this?: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pyqzxn0e9Jw
And if you week I've got the whole week off so we could try to experiment the bug a bit more to get more details. Thanks a lot for your help.
I hate to say it but this bug is still in 1.9 the full release. It seems servers wont update before 1.9.1 :/
And I've found out that if you teleport a player to spawn chunks for at least 1 tick before you teleport them anywhere they will not become invisible. That's a kind of solution but not a fix.
Thankfully, the flood of duplicate bug reports resulting from this bug being in a "stable" major release of Minecraft will knock some sense into the devs & force them to look at the bug that they're all duplicating: this one.
@alexander Thompsen:
Watch the devs look at your comment and go like "well that sounds like a great fix to us!".
Are you sure the teleporting to a spawn chunk and back will work? I have a perfect system to make you invisible, so I'll test it.
It also seems that elytra flying doesn't work either.
You meant the elytra doesn't work when you're invisible or you can't see the elytra?
When I teleport two players to a location that is ca. 200 block far away (render distance: 12), they get invisible. Tested it in a lan world flat map at coordinate 0, 0 and teleported @a to 0, 250. But if I tp them separately they didn't get invisible.
When you teleported them separately did 1 of them become invisible and the other was fine or they were both visible? It looks like the bug has something to do with chunk loading. For exemple if you teleport a player into an unloaded chunk, he will become invisible. But if you teleport another player while he's still in the chunk he won't be affected because the chunk is loaded.
I've uploaded a video that show, how the bug occurs to me.
https://youtu.be/RL6pmNHjPfo
The bug is activated by teleportation, in both videos, so this is a duplicate of
MC-92916, which already mentions players becoming invisible. Thanks for the video Janis, I'll include it in the description.
This issue has resurfaced on my vanilla server after the update to 1.12. Players will randomly become invisible and cannot be teleported to through the spectator menu and will not become visible until they relog or are kicked.
Traveling to the end and teleporting seems to exacerbate the issue.
Was unsure whether I should comment on this issue or try to create a new bug.
Can confirm it still exists in 1.12 as well. I can provide photo's if needed.
Am encountering this bug as well. We are experiencing this issue with multiple players at any given time.
This is a duplicate of
MC-92916, and that's already marked as affected there. This bug is the only thing keeping me on 1.8.9 when playing on servers. Mojang should take note - I might not be the only one.
