Unable to play 1.6 on osx 10.5.8 using new launcher (Invalid memory access of location)
I just got the new launcher from Mojang.com and tried it.
First, the snapshot download was a bit slow (slower than downloading 1.5 with the old launcher). But then, when it had finished I got an error message in the new lawncher's development conslole that said:
Client> Invalid memory access of location 0x0 rip=0x0
I restarted the computer to clear RAM but still got the same errror.

Same over here!
This ticket has been marked as a duplicate of MC-14241, in favor of the better description/information provided.
Please add your detailed systemspecs to the mentioned duplicate post MC-14241. We need to know what OS version you have and what kind of cpu (the last part you can find all the way at the top of the launcher console window after it starts up)

Running the launcher produces a suitable Minecraft app icon on the Mac task bar. Selecting a particular dev release, logging in and clicking play, currently reliably causes a 'launcher error 139', 'Invalid memory access of location 0x0 rip=0x0'. This is already logged as MCL-90, and is a known problem with Mac Os 10.5.8.
But in addition, after the error, the launcher itself loses its icon, even though it's still running OK.
To reproduce, trying adding and running a borked version of Minecraft itself to the launcher; on Mac OS 10.5.8 every version does this; on other OSes you'd probably need to deliberately break something.
No, everything is where MinecraftDev put it. I have been updating regularly even though I can't yet play any of the new snapshots. For example, I can try to start, say, 13w25a, which dies with error 139 as reported in MCL-90. But the launcher stays open, even though its icon has disappeared. I can then choose some other release, 13w20a, say, try to launch that, fail, try another and so on forever. So the /launcher/ is working throughout, save for the fact that it loses its icon the moment the main game suffers a launch error. It even continues to obtain updates correctly, even after losing its icon.

I've just come here from the LWJGL thread. (MCL-90) Mac Os 10.5.8, MC 1.6.2,
Now I can play again, I see pretty much all the symptoms described in the original bug description for MC-6665.
My game /was/ configured to run full-screen so I initially just got a black display and no activity when I first tried to run 1.6.2. Re-configuring to play in a window, I can play again, (yay!), but resizing or using the full-screen hotkey or config causes the problems described in this bug.

LWJGL dropped support for anything below 10.6+
Not Minecraft's issue, either upgrade your OS to 10.6, pray for LWJGL to reintroduce support, or continue to play 1.5.2
Edit: There's still some discussion too and apparently some attempted patches to it, so read through the comments.
Double edit: Someone check my facts, did I link the correct issue?
Hello, I am trying to install minecraft on a mac osx10.5.8 and the launcher MinecraftLauncher 1.0.1 gives the following error message, ""no compatible version of Java 1.6+ is available"
MCL-766 seems like the closest description of my issue but that bug report is closed and references this report MCL-90 for an answer. I attempted to find .minecraft/options.txt recommended above by Kumasasa but that file does not exist. (Likely because the launcher won't launch, and therefore hasn't created the folder.)
Can you recommend a remedy please?

I saw this first on launcher version 0.2, it's still there there with version 0.3, but version 0.0 had been fine.
Can you attach a copy of the entire console output?
I did a search of all the sources from the snapshot jar, and the string "Invalid memory access of location" was never found. I believe this may be an issue with LWJGL, especially considering how a normal java program cannot access raw memory, which is what the error is implying.
Still the same invalid memory access error with launcher 0.4, and ... is that a new LWJGL nightly?
Tried running both snapshot a and b, no difference.
There is some new feedback - From memory,
'Game exited with no errors detected (exit code 139)'
Query: /was/ the LWJGL used changed between v0.0 and 0.2 of the launcher?
Yes it was. Assigning this to Erik to take a look at.
Could someone try it with the latest snapshot? That one should be using the latest (and released) version of lwjgl.
If you mean 13w17a I already tried it but it's still the same:
Same here. I have only been able to play the new snapshots for a total of about 10 minutes before the 0.2 launcher update nobbled me.
I /can/ play 1.5.2, but only by manually bypassing the new launcher entirely, renaming 1.5.2.jar as minecraft.jar and using the old 1.5.1 setup. But as expected, that doesn't work for any of the weekly snapshots.
After chatting with the LWJGL people it seems that they depend on 10.6 features for their latest version (which is 2.9.0).
They are looking into if they are willing to support 10.5 (its old, ancient, apple doesn't support it anymore, its simple to upgrade to 10.6+ and they have no systems to test it on.)
Obviously the best workaround would be upgrading to 10.6
http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
If the LWJGL guys do decide they're going to cease support for 10.5.8, that will cause a knock-on minimum OS requirement of OS 10.6+ for Minecraft too. If that does become a firm requirement, please will you announce it so we can see about upgrading? I'm not planning to upgrade until support has definitely been officially dropped, because Minecraft is the only app I have that's significantly affected.
Thanks.
From the release thread, LWJGL 2.9.0 has officially removed support for OSX 10.3 and 10.4, but they don't say anything about 10.5 as yet that I've seen.
Absolutely, the ball is in their park right now however
I think they didn't realize they used some for the 10.6+ api until I pointed it out to them.
Regardless of LWJGL's decision to support 10.5 it might be a good idea to upgrade to 10.6. Apple stopped providing updates (most importantly the security ones) to 10.5 since 10.7 is out and we all know the amount of holes they have patched since.
I do suggest Snow Leopard or 10.6 myself as well, my issue is as I am using non-genuine Apple hardware there is an issue with upgrading, so I will be very sad if they give up on me.
Issue logged at the LWJGL end as well. It seems they intend to fix it for LWJGL 2.9.1.
https://github.com/LWJGL/lwjgl/issues/36
Yah, again like everyone here I love to play minecraft but don't have the money to go and upgrade my mac, I understand it's only what like 20 bucks but my money is already going towards my server and if that's not enough I'm 14 years old and don't really have a job, it would be great if they could make it so that minecraft no what version would be able to work on a mac 10.5.8 here is the crash report:
I too am having this issue. Here's my error report. Running OS 10.5.8, java 6.
My question is will this be fixed in the general release on July 1st? I've been building stables in preparation for 1.6, now I want to fill them with horses.
Thanks
I have the exact same thing but with my account no theirs
. Please help!
The exact same thing happens to me hope they fix it soon.
same thing with me i'm really pissed at the moment
Holy butts I wanted this fixed so I could actually play the 1.6.1 legit release. Please hurry LWJGL.
Ermagerd. When will this be fixed? I'm getting sad. ;-;
This is not really likely to be fixed. Just upgrade to 10.6? Join this century!
Erik Broes, how? I heard it costs money?
http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
Dude I can't upgrade cause I have a hackintosh meaning upgrading is a bitch. Plus it does cost some moolah, which is annoying.
Ok, then don't complain about your computer not supporting games correctly.
same here
me too I cant buy any thing
mod what sould I do with out buying anything
Hope that LWJGL decides to support 10.5.8 or use the old launcher and play 1.5.2.
plz LWJGL
We shouldn't have to upgrade our software to play a game we've bought and played perfectly in the past. I'm highly disappointed in you, the Mojang team. It seems you have always found a way to disappoint me... My computer has run Minecraft fine, and it's up to YOU to make it work-not me and more of my money.
What part of "LWJGL issue" did you not understood?
I understand that. I just don't see why you can't cooperate with them?
Yeah what the hell. This is such a HUGE waste of my time. There's still plenty of people out there that have 10.5..... I am seriously annoyed and I'd suggest mojang fixes this problem before they lose a whole lot of players.
tell me when they spport it
Mojang, I think tht your community would largely appreciate it if we weren't forced to upgrade our software to fit your reqirements. Are you aware that the update required in order to run the new launcher costs the same amount of money as the game? this is not only a great injustice, but will also come back to you at some point. I and probably many other people around tha world have falsely recommended mineraft to our friends, because they will buy it only to see that it won't work on their computers. With all due respect, this is a discrace comming from a acknowledged wideogame company.
I agree
read this https://github.com/LWJGL/lwjgl/issues/36
what do you guys think its my first ever update in minecraft and I cant play it
mojang plz fix it
So if I have this right, I have to pay an extra 20-30$ just to play minecraft again?
Technology changes, and computers that aren't upgraded can't always handle those changes. 1.5.2 is still available, and isn't going away any time soon.
@Jacob, others: Your options, summarised, are:
1) Keep playing 1.5.2, which will continue to be available for the foreseeable future, and works fine with 10.5.8
2) Upgrade your Mac to 10.6, which does cost money, but this is recommended for reasons other than just being able to play Minecraft. You can then play 1.6.1 and all the dev releases as you could before.
3) Wait for the LWJGL guys to fix their coding oversight. This problem isn't Mojang's fault, or within their power to fix. The LWJGL guys do plan to fix the problem with the next release of their library, and they seem to come out roughly every 4 months. So with this option you may have a little bit of a wait.
4) A nightly LWJGL that works with 10.5.8 may come out a bit sooner, but you'd have to be able to set that up for yourself, and this is likely to be technically fiddly.
I've got the exaclty same problem, I can't believe it my first minecraft update and it doesn't work. Do i need to buy a something expensive from apple just to play minecraft again!? Hopefully mojang see this issue quickly and fix it in the near future.

Takes some strain off my shoulders thanks tails. But what does he mean by fix. so we can now log on through 1.6?
You will be able to play 1.5.2 through the new launcher, but not 1.6 until the guys of LWJGL fix the issue.
OMFG Everyone seems retarded. Can't you see that it's not mojang's problem??? Its LWJGL's problem. Mojang can do NOTHING about this, just hope that they fix it. They perfectly know. Stop bothering Mojang, stop writing here about what should Mojang do or not and start writing on the LWJGL's forums about this. The only thing you are doing is spamming my mail and other people's mail, nothing else.
So, please, stop writing and wait patiently.
Tip: hit "stop watching this issue" to stop jira email spam.
I know that, Tails, but I want to be informed and if I didn't have mails activated I wouldn't ever know if this was solved or not...
But thanks anyways
Will minecraft wait for lwjgl to fix this before they release the new update?
how long does it take about
Actually, they have already officially released 1.6.1. It was released on Monday, July 1.
It's not fixed. Still having the same issue as of 7/3/13
The fix was to not allow to run 1.6 with the new launcher until the guys from LWJGL fix the bug.
it's not a bug, they just stopped supporting 10.5Moderator Message: Its a bug
So if i upgrade to 10.6+ minecraft should work? Because im running on 10.5 and just want to make sure before i upgrade.
Yes, minecraft works on 10.6. I've personally tried it: it works perfectly.
Yeah you need snow leopard. Go to store.apple.com and buy it. Or wait for LWGL to upgrade.
For the 10.5.* people with issues, please restart your launcher and try again with 1.6.1. LWJGL did an update and I've just updated the configuration so when you are on 10.5.* you will get the updated LWJGL 2.9.1-nightly-20130707.
Please let us know if it works out!
I updated my launcher by downloading it again and it did not work. It just gave the same crash report.
When i try to log on i cant login it says wrong username or password and i have it correct HALP (Mac 1.5)
Ken just click cant remember password and it will send you an email.
Same here, I re-downloaded and got the same crash report unfortunately.
Can the people who failed after retrying please attach a txt file with the full output of the Developer Console?
Here you go. I really appreciate you guys trying to keep up the support for us out-of-date folks, by the way.
Thanks everyone! I've talked with the LWJGL people and they have made a super spammy debug-build.
We should be able to figure out which calls are still doing 10.6 magic.
Can you please try again after this post and let us know the full log when you crash (yes you will crash with TONS of info).
Thanks!!
Thanks! reported that to the right people.
We have yet another build up, please try it, it should get further and might very possibly actually work (there are only so many issues we can need to solve here ;D)
As once before, please report the full output of the Developer Console into this ticket.
now this happened
Thanks for that, reporting the persistance of the same error back.
Grum I cant login it says wrong username or password but i have it correct
Does this bug your trying to get fixed going to apply 1.6.2 also?
Yes Ricky.
And I got another updated dev-build for you guys, please try it with either 1.6.2 or 1.6.1.
As before, please paste the full Developer Console if something breaks
Ya still didn't work for 1.6.2 but im trying 1.6.1 now
Nope not with 1.6.1 either. Thanks for attempting to fix this bug really appreciate it!
Try the new one! It'll probably still break but be sure to paste the output so we can see where. Thanks!
I'm using the latest version on the client and the error seems to be the same. When the client crashes I'm given an error that gives some other information that might be useful.
Here is the log from the development console(sorry I don't know how to use the code box thing):
And this is the problem report given by my computer:
just to be clear, is this problem something that Mojang wants to resolve or will I need to update my operating system to use minecraft 1.6 and subsequent versions?
There is a bug in minecraft 1.6 that makes it unable to work on mac 10.5.8. We post the development console on this so they know what the problem is and they can fix it.
Ya so 1.6.2 and 1.6.1 still aren't working and I have the latest launcher so is it just the same lwgjl bug or a new one?
I'm pretty sure it is the same bug but you should ask a moderator about this just in case.
Still broken on 1.6.2
Still broken for me too
We added yet another debug-build, please try 1.6.2 or 1.6.1 and paste the full output of the Developer Console in here, thanks!
Some permission issue on the uploaded archives, should be fixed. Try again please!
same thing happens
Then you have a caching proxy that fails, it works here
Opened the launcher and the update notes come up as this:

Please try once more, we updated again!
It launches but this is what my dev console looks like..its constant spam. I suppose closing the launcher window would be fine.
Its in the attachments area named "devconsole.rtf"
Grum Pls i cant login but i have correct info
i changed my password but still didnt work
it says cannot contact authentication server
Restart the launcher, it should have no spam now. I hope =)
It works! No spam either
Thanks a lot!
Nice work Mojang. Well done. Keep it like this.
Actually we'll be announcing no more support for 10.5.* for the future whenever it gets on the horizon.
Probably also 10.6.*.
From what Im seeing from the feedback from people it works, Thanks Mojang.
I thought I would have to find another game to play....
Yayayaya, Once I get home, I can finally go on a server and ride my horse to the sunset!
Gooo Mooojanga! ;P lalalalallalalalalalalalalalal.
Hope you can tell im happy.
Well it's not a problem for me becase I have 10.8 already. But many other people will care about this...
Well, I guess so... Anyway I'll prob. getting a new computer soon anyway.
But I've tried bootcamping my computer to pc, but haven't tried mc on it. xI
Can you clairify
10.5.8 won't be supported after 1.6.1 any more or It won't be supported when it gets really out of date?
Also if I go fullscreen it goes black.
Thank you for fixing the problem
!
I don't know if this is related to 10.5.8, but when I install forge onto the new launcher, I get
"Invalid memory access of location 0x0 rip=0x0" and
"Game ended with bad state (exit code 139)". This is what it said last time when the bug stopped it from working on 10.5.8. (You can see it at the end of JMDC's development console). (The one below is a forge release)
I can play 1.6.2 in a window now, but if I try to play full-screen I see the problems described at
MC-6665. If I try to /start/ 1.6.2 in full-screen mode I just get a black screen. I'm provisionally switching my attention toMC-6665as that now seems to be my new underlying problem.Thank you
wah, I'm getting "game ended with a bad state" when I play on a multi-player server
Ricky, that is because forge doesn't use the nightly builds correctly.
If someone can give me the 1.6.2.json file for 10.5.8 (email it to me at mojang@ezekielelin.com or upload it here) I can try to get Forge support implemented.
http://pastebin.com/iZ0e2uFB on mac 10.5.8 os, post start up problem with GL. Black screen after it goes automatically to full on opening.
@sam jones: Does MC-21603 describe your issue ?
id say it does. It still seems to be a problem with the 2.9.1 lwjgl nightly build on mac 10.5.8. howd i get it to not automatically boot into fullscreen so i can atleast (finally) get some 1.6 gameplay in, if it works in window.. the mojang loading screen works fine. so i have an inkling it will
Hello please forgive my technical ignorance. My sons are desperate to upgrade to 1.6.2 unfortunately the upgrade will not run on their Macbook which runs OS 10.5.8. I'm afraid I don't understand what I should do to get it working, when they launch Minecraft, the screen just goes black. Please would you be kind enough to send be step by step instructions as to how to get 1.6.2 working on their computer. Many thanks untech savy mum.
@Gilbo: This should be fixed since a while now.
Please:
Hello. Is this what I was meant to copy and paste?
@Gilbo
Yes, that is what kumasasa wanted. Looking at your report, I think this may actually be a different bug then the one in this thread. Was there anything else? A crash report in another tab of the launcher maybe?
Hello Chris
As far as we can see, there is no other crash report.
@Gilbo
This is
MC-6665Change in .minecraft/options.txt "fullscreen=true" to "fullscreen=false"
Sorry, I don't understand what I have to do?
Hello I've searched .minecraft/options.txt but can't find it anywhere? I did a search through the finder and even when I searched all .txt files it didn't come up with any minecraft text files at all. Please could you be more specific about where this file lives. Many thanks

If that doesn't help you please use the Mojang Support Center.
Many thanks for your help.
Hello, I am trying to install minecraft on a mac osx10.5.8 and the launcher MinecraftLauncher 1.0.1 gives the following error message, ""no compatible version of Java 1.6+ is available"
MCL-766seems like the closest description of my issue but that bug report is closed and references this reportMCL-90for an answer. I attempted to find .minecraft/options.txt recommended above by Kumasasa but that file does not exist. (Likely because the launcher won't launch, and therefore hasn't created the folder.)Can you recommend a remedy please?
Elliot try clicking on the spotlight in the top right corner and type in java preferences click on it. Then in general drag java 1.6 to the top.
The java preferences only shows Java 1.5 and 1.4, and 1.5 is selected. There is no option for 1.6. I am away from the computer but will provide a screen capture later. I'm using a mac g5 with a powerpc chip and have upgraded java as much as possible.
I don't think you can update java to 1.6 since you are using a PowerPC processor. You can't update to Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard because this version of Macintosh is Intel only. I'm sorry I don't think there is anything to do in your case, just get a new Mac.
re error message: "no compatible version of Java 1.6+ is available" - file attached
McMacker4, yes I expect there is no way to get Java 1.6 running on this machine. Is there an older version of the launcher available? (Downloading old versions here http://minecraft.net/download gives an error too; see new attachment) Or some other option that doesn't involve me spending money for a new machine for my kid brother?
This is the error received trying to access the old launcher at http://minecraft.net/download using Mac g5 10/5/8
I' sorry to tell you but the older launcher will only let you play minecraft 1.5.2. but won't let you play 1.6.2 (the newest version) since the new launcher uses a different location on your hard drive to save the game's files. I'm afraid there is nothing to do but get a new computer. I'm sorry
As i've seen in the screensot you uploaded, the one that said something about the architecture if your computer, that could mean many things. It could mean that this launcher can only run if it is in your Applications folder (which I doubt). Could mean that you are using the new launcher (which I don't think it supports PowerPC based Macs) thinking that you are using the old one...
Could be many things.
If you have an old Mac running OSX 10.5.8 Leopard with 32 bit you can't get Java 6 (aka Java 1.6). This means you can't run the new launcher and so can't play Minecraft 1.6.2 . The old launcher will only run Minecraft 1.5.2 .
This was my situation so I had to upgrade my OS to 10.6 Snow Leopard. This comes with Java 6 and now I can finally run Minecraft again. You will probably need to do the same. Upgrading your OS is cheaper than buying a new computer at least.
Good luck
