Sign, command block, book, and lectern GUIs brighten the screen instead of dimming it
The bug
Crafting tables, furnaces, brewing stands, enchantment tables, looms, chests, and other containers all dim the screen when accessed.
Three GUIs do not follow this pattern: signs, command blocks, and books (in hand or via a lectern). Instead, they actually brighten the screen by removing the vignette. Observe the following three screenshots:
Normal gameplay (vignette active)

**Regular GUI (screen dim)

Book/command block (screen light, vignette gone)

How to reproduce
- Go underground somewhere where the vignette is clearly visible, but it's still bright enough to see.
- Open a chest.
→
The screen is dimmed - Open a book.
→
The screen is not dimmed, and the vignette disappears

I think that the book thing is intentional, if you look at Java Edition you'll notice that it behaves the same way.
