Villager Trade Disparity against JAVA - XP & Levelling Issues
Issues as per my video here: https://youtu.be/zgTqfpuWXaQ
There are several issues present in this report as follows:
1. Trading is overall more Expensive
Compared to the JAVA edition of the game, many items across many of the professions are either more expensive to purchase or you get less in return.
Take the librarian for instance:
- On JAVA 6 Emeralds gives you 3 bookcases per trade
- On Bedrock 6 Emeralds gives you only 1 bookcase per trade
There are other examples of this disparity across the various professions.
2. Trades lock up much more quickly
On JAVA edition the same villager profession will offer between 6 and 8 trades before requiring a restock and more than 1 enchanted book.
On Bedrock edition trades are capped at 2 and 4 and just 1 enchanted book before restocking.
Again the JAVA Librarian will offer 18 bookcases (3 x 6 trades) before locking up where as on Bedrock librarian will offer 4 (1 x 4 trades)
This wouldn't be so bad if the Bedrock edition villagers restocked more than once per day.
It seems Bedrock edition villagers have a chance to restock twice a day, if they're allowed to roam free in a village, but when held in a trading hall style system, they will only restock when they first wake up in the morning
3. Levels / Experience increases much more slowly
On JAVA it is possible to level up a librarian to Master in just one 1 without him needing to restock costing just:
- 144 paper
- 11 emeralds
- 1 book and quill
In comparison, the Bedrock villager requires:
- 3 in game days for restocking
- 144 paper
- 140 emeralds
- 38 ink sacs
- 33 books
- 1 book and quill
Other professions take even longer and require you to buy even more unwanted items in order to level up.
If just using paper, emeralds and books, the Bedrock villager takes:
- 12 in game days
- 2,268 paper
- 616 Emeralds
- 138 books
Compared to JAVA which requires just:
- 3 in game days
- 600 paper
- 146 Emeralds
- 28 Books
Overall it is just crazy how much more time and resources are required to level up a villager in the Bedrock edition of the game. There are massive differences in costs over the two platforms as well as the number of available trades per day and the general trade mechanics.

Confirmed by looking through the fisherman and fletcher trade tables in the 1.16 vanilla behavior pack. Every trade where these villagers buy items for emeralds gives twice as much XP as the trades at the same level where they sell items for emeralds. In 1.14 and earlier it was the opposite, they got more XP when the player bought from them. The older behavior was more intuitive and challenging, as it usually meant you had to buy their wares to unlock the best offers.
It seems this change was made along with the fix to MCPE-47141, but I do not know if this change was correct.

This needs fixing, enormous amount of time and resources required in Bedrock to work with villagers now, compared to Java. Not good.
I've been playing bedrock and have the same issues. whats more i have expanded my village to keep up with the population growth. i currently have over 200 or so villagers ( ive taken their food away to prevent them from multiplying.) and a bed and a crafting station for each. but even with so many bed / stations they don't seem to seek out to restock their inventories. what it looks like is that they claim one for their own and can only restock at that specific station. this is going to make the 1k emerald trade achievement almost impossible
Unlike many parity requests (ie Redstone) this is about increasing computational efficiency.
Currently in order to trade at a frequency similar to java, more villagers and larger farms are required. More villagers and larger farms means more entities. More entities means more compute load.
Reducing trade burden would improve realm performance.
Also, the more you trade with a villager in bedrock, every time he refreshes the price is more expensive than before. As I understand, that is the opposite of what is intended and doesn't encourage anyone to trade with villagers.
Okay, I've seen way too many reports like this one. First and foremost, why are you basing your complaint on a comparison with Java Edition? Not all differences from Java are bugs. And trivial differences that have no effect on gameplay or the game experience aren't parity issues either. You aren't allowed to post a ticket because something doesn't match Java because both versions are completely DIFFERENT. This is NOT a place to argue about feature parity. Going forward, Mojang is going to be tracking parity issues and feature requests on the Minecraft Feedback Site and tracking bugs here. Go to the Parity Request Guide if you wish to make a post at https://feedback.minecraft.net, or upvote an existing topic there. I'm not being aggressive by any means, I'm just trying to help out.
The new trading was added to both versions at the same time but they do not work in the same way, this is much more of a bug than a parity issue. If you can trade for 6 enchanted books in one day in java but only once in bedrock then it's simply been coded differently by the two teams and thus one of them have created a bug.
Parity issues should be requests to bring a feature from one version to the other, such as sweeping edge, being able to push chests with pistons or being able to crouch under 1.5 tall gaps.
Also this isn't just a trivial difference it is a small part of a much bigger issue with villagers and villages just not functioning correctly in the bedrock edition right now.
This bug is merely one of many issues with villagers on the Bedrock Edition that causes people to not take Bedrock seriously as a viable game option. It is obvious that Java is the favorite as their bugs and needs are always fixed in a timely manner (example: the fact that their iron farms work and Bedrock Ed.’s does not) let’s try making Bedrock a top priority.
To reply to @Rich D, "The new trading was added to both versions at the same time but they do not work in the same way, this is much more of a bug than a parity issue. If you can trade for 6 enchanted books in one day in java but only once in bedrock then it's simply been coded differently by the two teams and thus one of them have created a bug." This is exactly what I mean by a parity issue. A bug by definition is an error in a computer program or system, however, there is no bug because all trades are offered exactly what is stated in the code. And the fact that you can trade more times in Java but once in Bedrock means that there is a disparity between the two versions NOT A BUG. Please know the difference between a bug and a parity issue, this is why I linked the Parity Request Guide above if you're not sure whether your issue is a parity request or a bug.
I realize this is not a "discussion site" and also that the devs are probably quite busy. However, one would also assume that the Java and Bedrock devs at least collaborate on new game features and hopefully don't intentionally create such a major disparity for a brand-new feather. It would really be nice though for issues such as this if an actual dev could comment on whether this intentional or not, and if so, what is the rationale for such a dramatic difference in functionality, when it would seem to be fairly straightforward to at least make the number of items given in trade equal out of the gate.
The wiki says that in 1.12 they increased the amount of trades before a villager locks out.
That will help with the amount of time needed to unlock all trades for a villager, but prices are unchanged.
Could this be checked again with the latest Java version trades?
The wiki is fairly accurate : https://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Trading
Multiple differences make it very long and costly to level up a villager :
- A Java villager need 480xp to level to master, 540 on bedrock.
- Small trades give less xp on bedrock edition (ie Armorer trade coal for 1xp on BE, 2 on Java)
- You can trade a lot less (ie Armorer trades 6 times coal on BE, 16 times on Java before locking up).
- Villager don't instantly restock when leveling up (like they did before 1.11 and still do on Java)
- Trading prices don't depend on player's popularity in the village, so the prices always go up and you have to wait a lot of game days for them to go down. In Java popularity decreases prices.
- Curing a zombie villager don't decrease prices like they do on Java.
The fact that you can trade less also makes a lot of trades useless, for example quartz blocks from the stonemason. To get a stack every restock, you need 5 villagers on java, 13 on bedrock.
If you actually want to take advantage of villagers and trading to build, you need a lot of villagers which mechanically means a lot of entities and lag...
I can confirm that this happens, and I would say plagues all platforms of the bedrock edition.
This is confirmed for latest 1.12. The most annoying bug. Villager trading. No zombie discounts, no refreshing of trades twice a day, no discounts after trading a while. Villager trading got absolutely trashed in the Bedrock Edition. Rushed way too much.
Villager Trading is the most important thing I wanted to see fixed (balanced) in 1.13 but looks this won't be happening. First villagers don't even refresh trades twice and also increase the prices the next so you have to wait another day. Even if you trade with increased prices they increase it even further. Absolutely discouraging mechanic given to us poor Bedrock players.
I attached a behaviour pack that :
- Get rid of the disparity in xp requirement to level up a villager
- Make the trades identical in number/prices
Unfortunately restocking and price decreasing requires dev team intervention.
1.16.0.57 made this issue much, much less drastic. However, there are still some differences. They're documented at this page, under the "Unsorted" section. Most of the differences are small, such as minor xp differences. The biggest issue throughout is that similar items are "grouped" in Bedrock while they aren't in Java; however, I'd say this is more of an issue that Java needs to fix and not vice versa. This issue applies to wandering traders as well.
The other notable thing is that Bedrock has pools for each specific trade slot, while Java only has pools for each level of villager. An example of this is the Farmer. In Bedrock, its first trade will be 1 of 4 random crop trades and his second will always be to sell bread. In Java, the first two trades choose 2 of those 5. Again, this is probably more of an issue for Java to fix, but it's still worth mentioning here.
In addition, leveling XP requirements were lowered to match Java's.
1.16.0.57 kinda nerfed this but still there is still some unnerfed trades like 9 emerald for 1 bookshelf or it's intended whichever the case maybe, this is overkill
9 bookshelves for one emerald is intended, it's like that in Java Edition
1.16 has released and this has been fixed, but the issue is that Villagers traded with before the update will not change their trade values, meaning you will have to get new villagers for them to have the correct trade values.
I second Jasiebl. I have librarians for every enchantment before 1.16 and the trident ones from after 1.16. The old ones still lock out after 2 trades, but the new ones take longer to lock. (Additionally, they still don't sell curses -
