Transparent parts of skins are supposed to appear transparent.

Tap 'browse'
Select the skin
When it comes/is uploaded, the transparent parts appear black

Sorry if this dupes MCPE-8948, but this bug still exists. It also happens on 0.11.
This affects all other transparent skins but some.
However, two skins' transparency DO work. I will upload a picture soon.
@Mega_Spud: Not a duplicate of MCPE-8948, because the other ticket is for the bug of transparent skins not invisible body parts.
Thank you for your report! However, this issue has already been reported as MCPE-8948. Consider doing a search next time, to check if a report on the issue you're submitting doesn't already exist.
Closing as Cannot Reproduce.
I was able to use this skin without the game crashing when using the Alex (thin arms) format (see screenshot) 
Other than that, it may be that the image used was invalid, or you exceeded the number of transparent pixels per bodypart (see MCPE-8948).

Any transparency at all is disabled on custom skins as of 1.2 betas, any pixel that is not opaque will render as black. (Not duplicating MCPE-8948) TL:DR Image "skin2" shouldn't be treated as image "skin1" - image "skin1" rendering as black is intended, image "skin2" isn't.
Thanks Zain, what information gives you the impression that transparent skins should work in MCPE? I've not looked into this feature, but my gut says it has not been implemented.

In addition, Johan initially stated that skins would have the same format as Computer Edition 1.8+, which do support transparent hat/jacket/pant layers.

I thought this was WAI to prevent players being invisible.

After further investigation of attached screenshots I assume this happens because you exceeded the number of transparent pixels per bodypart. Skin will not be validated if too much of the body parts is missing.
From the wiki:
"A skin will only allow solid color; transparency is not allowed on the skin file except on the second layer, which is transparent by default; playing offline, pixels can be left free resulting in "holes" in the skin."
In the PC version, if playing offline you can make some parts of the skin transparent. This might not apply to PE.
EDIT: "Non-transparent skin prevents issues with completely transparent skin users "haunting" other players." (see pictures) Even though I experimented with an armless skin...
In wiki it says that skin with "void" color aka. TRANSPARENT will turn to black. And of course; mojang doesnt want players going LEGITIMATELY invisible without the corresponding POTION OF INVISIBILITY. If you want to go invisible; drink the potion ( but not completely ) Also, if you succesfully do that, you will have to deal with your name plate if you go invisible... And.. No. Not that you have a few transparent pixels; the game will accept it... In my experiment, a mojang done skin with few layers of transparent pixels will still be accepted as black pixels... Even if i had ONE TRANSPARENT PIXEL it doesnt work... Ps. This affects ALL VERSIONS starting from 0.11.0
