What I expected.
1. I use wheat or some other appropriate food that they are attracted to.
2. I right click them to have them enter 'love mode' and mate. What actually happened:
I tried various foods and none of them attracted the horses (like wheat would for example) and all right clicking does is mount the horses.I
t's possible that Mojang hasn't implemented breedingfor them yet. What I expected.

Edit: Did a bit more testing and checked in survival mode and although they'll consume some foods, the result is the same.

@Chad Anderson, it still happens since I'm getting lag with the lava on a 1.5 server map. Haven't checked about 1.5.1
I've posted a pic of another way that this lag can happen and it's been happning since at least 1.2 or 1.3 maybe.
How to reproduce:
1. Make a 2x2x2 hole.
2. Fill with cows (pigs and sheep should also reproduce it) to at least 100+
3. Walk away from the cow pit and you'll have sudden lag.
It happens when the sound is set to on an doesn't happen when it's off. Also doesn't happen when approaching it.
I'm experiencing this as well with the cows.
I think it may be related to https://mojang.atlassian.net/browse/MC-46 since I also experienced the lava sound lag.
I noticed that behavior before with a 3x3x2 pit with many cows in them, that one was back in 1.3 .
I checked it out and I'm getting the same thing. However, when spawned from eggs, they'll randomly spawn babies. Sometimes there will be two. It's random though, maybe all of them will, maybe none.
What I did was a similar step to Stewart:
1. Create a bunch of holding pens (be they fences or just a pit in the ground).
2. use the egg to create two cows in each one.
3. check the pens to see if any have spontaneously given birth. Checked with sheep, didn't see any (though the egg DID spawn a baby sheep), checked with pigs and saw one.
I was going to make a bug report about animals randmonly giving spontaneous birth using egg, but I'm not sure if that is a feature or not.
Well, I was clicking pretty close to the first one while trying to make the second one so I think you're right about that.
Going to test it out with food.
ALSO going to spawn them away from each other to eliminate the spontaneous birth.
Edit: Tested with cows, pigs, and sheep and didn't see any double births. Then again I am using 1.5, not 1.5.1
Still happens sometimes in the overworld, might be related to light glitches.
Sometimes it's that two animals try to go through the door (or fence) at the same time and block each other.
They can path through gates just fine on their own, but when being lured by food, they don't always go through the gate.
I haven't tested with other animals, but there seems to be a bit of a delay with cow pathing when you lure them with food. More noticeable when there are a lot of them.
PC version 1.5.1
Confirmed with baby cows.
Have you tried it with any other servers, like maybe one that you know is working? or did you try and find out if that server is working?
This one has lots of potential causes unrelated to minecraft.
Uh, how do I do that Tails? I didn't create the origional ticket.
Oh, well, it still affects and is a concern in 1.5.1
I did say that it was in version 1.5.1 and that I've seen it happen. It can happen to other mobs when it's crowded.
However, I had also noticed that cows don't immediately respond to you holding the wheat even when there are a few, they can take some time.
While the pathing delay in large numbers might be understandable, especially when going for a single target, it's something to look into.
I've noticed this too, there is always one animal that manages to get itself stuck in the NW corner of the fenced area. Tried to fix this by putting sand in the corner and while they don't get stuck anymore with that, they still try to cram into any NW corner of a fenced area.
So it's partially a hitbox issue and partially a pathing issue.
Version 1.5.1
I actually prefer it that way.
facepalm whoops XD I swear that there was a PC version issue ticket for this.
Anyways, I am seeing something like this in the PC edition.
Confirmed with Windows 7 32x, Java 7 (and whatever the latest update is) and it just crashes (or closes itself) every time I click the play button.
I've ruled out magiclauncher as interfering.
Also, I didn't see any green progress bar, or maybe it went by fast.
Uh, you mounted a house? Seriously?
It's possible this may be intended.
I think this is actually a duplicate of a similar issue.
The environment info needs to get updated.
I can launch it now, but I'm also seeing the error that was posted.
Confirmed, I guess it's understandable as things are still in development.
Oh, I thought it might have counted as a separate bug, sorry.
Confirmed, I had one graze on soul/slow sand, eew.
It's also been reported that they graze underwater.
Confirmed with riding a horse.
Just updating this so that people who might report this issue have a possibility of seeing this one.
(the version affected should be updated as well)
It's supposed to be intentional, but it IS annoying and unless you have a rope/leash, you can't ride them back out of the water.
Happening in large numbers with the 13w17a snapshot.
Confirmed in 12w17a with boats.
I can report the same thing for Windows 7 32x. When I tried to delete the older MCdev launcher, it gave me an error about the file still being active. I looked in taskmanager and saw the javaw thing, Had to end proccess on those before I could delete the old one so I can download and put on desktop the newer one.
So it's not just a Mac problem.
Edit: I looked at popular issues and apparently this is a duplicate (or at least an extension of) https://mojang.atlassian.net/browse/MC-1408 Then again, this one is for the new launcher,
MC-1408is for the old launcher version. They did, or at least tried to make them less common. I think they were trying to get rid of the small pools of water which are often in the side of a dune.
It's sprites and I believe this is an existing issue.
Were you near a spot where the light glitched to black? Because I had one spawn in the glitched shadow on the church/tower which promptly exploded. I never even saw it.
That's pretty close to out of nowhere, was with 1.5 I believe, maybe 1.5.1. Other than this fluke occurence, I haven't seen anything like the OP reported
Also, are you sure they aren't coming from small spots that you forgot to light up completely? Since they'll path to you now, they're coming from somewhere.
I can sort of reproduce.
If I make a one block hole and put a zombie in it and hit it, it'll jump around trying to get out, but it stops after a moment or two, forgets you as a target, and then walks out.
Try this, make a 3x3 hole, make a zombie, punch it, then go one block up, it'll have trouble getting up onto the block you are on, but place another block and it can go up one block just fine.
I've seen the new zombie spawning code spawn the zombies way up in the air (which isn't supposed to happen), so I guess you're seeing those who survived the mid-air plunge.
Confirmed I think, since I'm having FPS drops when I look in the direction of horses.
Confurmed, you guys broke fire, lol XD
