Spawn Protection does not work on multiplayer servers.
The OP only 33x33 radius around spawn does not work.
Any player can destrow the spawn.

This is not the same issue as MC-296 as i do not think it has anything to do with Spawn protection, I just used that because it was the simplest way for me to notify the server about a block beeing placed on a block that does not exist. Otherwise i would need to modify the client.
@CubeTheThird no, as you can see in the image, block¹ was between the wood(spawn) and gold²
Tested and confirmed.
Vanilla 1.4.2 SMP server has no spawn protection.
Have tested on new 1.4.2 vanilla server. Ensure ops.txt has at least one entry and then spawn-protection should work fine.

Jon's comment is confirmed. That's kind of a silly change but that means that this is not a bug.
