Did you name the endermite using a name tag, or with a renamed spawn egg? The latter would be MC-54556 which is intended.
not a feature request but duplicate of MC-54556

Does MC-54556 describe your issue?
Named mobs aren't special, persistent mobs are.
PersistenceRequired stops despawning.
So this IS a duplicate of MC-54556.
This isn't with /summon, Anthony.
Trillian, having a name is not what prevents despawning, for any mob. PersistenceRequired does. Name tags set both NBT, renamed spawn eggs do not.
This is actually a duplicate of MC-54556,which is WAI.
Seeing this report again, it looks like MC-54556, named spawn egg mobs despawning, which is by design. A name doesn't prevent despawning, PersistenceRequired does, which name tags set alongside the name.
To anyone who reproduced this with name tags, I'd suggest providing steps to reproduce and/or a video of the issue.
Thank you for your report!

just a note, has to be a hostile mob
Confirmed.
Maybe related to the fix of
MC-46776Fixed in 14w19a.
Cannot confirm fix, see screenshots.
Still an issue for me in 14w19a.
@Itouch2: That was what I wanted so say...
I saw the screenshots. I performed a similar test and got different results. I named a creeper with a nametag in 14w19a and surrounded it by a bunch of other unnamed creepers. Then I went in to spectator mode, and the named creeper didn't despawn, but the unnamed ones did.
Now that I think about it, there is no name tag in your inventory. Did you name the spawn eggs and spawn one in instead of naming it with a name tag? If so, that could be the reason why we're getting different results.
I did a test and found that only mobs named with a name tag will remain after going into spectator mode. I'm guessing this is a bug, but I'm not sure if it's only supposed to be mobs with a name tag that don't despawn or if it's that any named mob is not supposed to despawn. Here's a link with screenshots of the test I did:

Can confirm that name tagged hostile mobs do not despawn.
Updated title and description accordingly.
Spawner egg renamed mobs have the tag PersistenceRequired not set but name tagged mobs do.
Is that the bug here or is that behaviour intended ?
Confirmed for 14w21b.
This appears to also occur with naming mobs via commands, according to
MC-55883Blah that's because they do the same, custom name doesn't prevent despawning presistance required does
setting presistance required to true prevents the spawning
name tag does set to true, spawn egg doesn't
That way this ticket would be Working as Intended.
Kumasasa it's the way is acts now, I don't know if it's intended and I didn't say it neither
That's true.
is this still an issue in 14w29b, you have to test with multiple players because the spectator rule of despawning is now only when there are other non spectators online
still a promblem 21w03
Just because the PersistenceRequired tag isn't being set doesn't mean it was intentionally made that way. They could have easily just forgotten to make it do that. This should be reopened until Mojang confirms whether it was actually intended or not.
