floating tripwire doesn't mix with non-floating tripwire - it will just pop off
if you have floating trip wire and a hook with a block there under it won't connect with the trip wire and when you place the block when the wire is already placed and you walk on it, it brakes and when you place a block under the trip wire when everything is floating the wire breaks.
i think the wire should connect and work like normal wire and won't break when you place a block under it

Resolving as duplicate of MC-570. As stated there by Dinnerbone it has to be either all grounded or all air/transparent blocks, otherwise it won't work right.

Let me start out by saying that I understand the intention that tripwire must be entirely floating or entirely grounded. I'm not calling that a bug. However, I believe a specific aspect of the implementation is unduly inconsistent. This has been mentioned before in discussion of MC-13077 (dupe) and MC-570 (WAI), but not clearly explicated as different from the obvious intended behavior.
I am seeing inconsistent behavior when there is a block under a Tripwire Hook, but not the tripwire itself. Specifically, if the tripwire itself is floating:
- If there is a block underneath a tripwire hook facing north or east (south or west end of a tripwire line), then the hook will be inactive, just like if the tripwire line itself is partially on the ground and partially suspended. That's fine.
- However, if there is a block underneath a tripwire hook facing south or west (north or east end of a tripwire line), then the tripwire will function normally, and in addition the tripwire and hooks will spontaneously toggle between the “connected” and “disconnected” states, with accompanying sound effects.
The above also holds in reverse: a grounded tripwire works even if the south or west-facing hook has no block under it.
For consistency, a block underneath a south or west-facing tripwire hook should also prevent the tripwire line from functioning.
The attached image shows a test rig. The displayed tripwires will spontaneously connect/disconnect a few times a minute — see how some of the hooks are in the disconnected state.

Oh. Well, in that case, this isn't a dupe of MC-570, although this is probably also intended.
Not a dupe of MC-570, this is complaining about the way the texture changes when the hook is connected.
Oh, yeah. MC-570 should be removed from the duplicate list, it's unrelated.

This is an intentional feature as I understand it. Floating tripwire and block-based tripwire cannot be mixed.
the video is very slow with uploading so it can take a few hours when you can watch it i comment again when its done
Please edit your summary to something more descriptive. "trip wire break" in itself is not really a bug, you may want to change it to something like "floating trip wire doesn't mix with non-floating trip wire - it will just pop off" if you believe that is the bug.

This is intentional behaviour. Tripwire can be all floating or all grounded, but not a mixture of both. It behaves in subtly different ways depending on its suspension status, so it logically just cannot function while in a mixed state.
Could someone elaborate further on "It behaves in subtly different ways depending on its suspension status" besides how it is presented in each state? If this was fixed it would enhance the use of tripwires because of the ability to make a 8x8 display actually 8x8 instead of 16x16 possible using this setup http://imgur.com/a/Hr2wV#0 So please reconsider this BUG.
This should be considered a bug. In general, tripwire shouldn't be destroyed when blocks underneath are changed. It kills a lot of the potential and depth of the system. By changing this, we can finally have a detection method on the ground that still works without said ground. For instance, pulling away the floor without the tripwire breaking.
Also I want to point out, you can have a grounded tripwire without a block under one of the hooks. I'm sure it relates to the whole N/S/E/W thing, as only a specific end will work.
Hell, while I'm at it, I think hooks themselves should trigger the mechanism too. But the issue at hand is as OP stated.
This behavior also occurs when the ground is a mix of opaque and transparent blocks. As this behavior is clearly buggy, this report should be marked as "Won't fix" instead of "Works as intended".
I don't get it, what is even the point of 'suspended' states of tripwire/tripwire hook? Why should it matter if a block is under it or not? The suspended version has a model that is higher up on the block..... which logically, seems backwards because the version on the ground seems like it needs more room below for proper activation.
I see no behavior change (what are the "subtle differences" besides hitbox size, and why are they important? I've never heard anyone say that suspended/grounded tripwire was NEEDED for something to work), just remove the 'suspended' state and raise the model/hitbox up on tripwire+tripwire hooks. Bam, no more mixed state.
Has been fixed now.
This issue has been fixed. Tripwire now doesn't care what it's on.
