This seems like a duplicate of MC-93.

This is not just with signs. Sometimes it occurs with the sky.
Is this still a concern on Minecraft 1.4.4 Pre-Release? If so, please update the affected versions.

Confirmed on 1.4.5.
Anyone who's having this issue, can you please hold F3+C for 10 seconds and release?
This will forcefully crash your game and generate a crashreport.
Please attach the crashreport to this ticket so Mojang has something to work from.
It looks like this bug is not happening with everyone.

I just tried it on a 1.4.5 singleplayer world and a 1.4.4 server (client on 1.4.5) and couldn't see it again.
Can you please confirm if this is still the case in the latest snapshot?

Maps do light up, but signes don't.
