Tamed Pet (wolf) disappears when player 2 enters nether portal
During local play / split screen player 2 has a tamed wolf. We both enter the nether and the wolf disappears. I tried `/tp @e[name=Name] @p` but no entity could be found. We tamed a second wolf and tried again with the same results.
I (player 1) was able to bring my tamed wolf through the nether portal without issue however at the time I was not playing split screen.

We are tracking an issue with all or nearly all mobs in the area around the player vanishing when the world is reloaded in versions 1.17.30 through 1.18.2 Hotfix at MCPE-144208. Please do not comment here if that describes your experience.
Please limit comments to New information about the issue. A short list of what is most helpful and what is not is listed below. Please take the time to read this brief list before commenting.
A list of mobs you have lost is not helpful information. We know this bug can impact any mob, we know that leashed mobs that despawn will leave behind a leash knot, and we know that when villagers despawn their beds and workstations remain linked to the missing villager until you break them or 20 minutes pass. What might be helpful are details about things like
- what you were doing leading up to the mobs disappearing
- single vs. multiplayer, local vs server/realm
- how far you traveled
- how long the current or previous play session lasted
- whether the despawns were near a player spawn point or if you had changed your player spawn point during the session,
- if you experienced lag or anything else abnormal.
Some cases of persistent mobs despawning can be traced to them crossing chunk borders between saves, so one way to guard against randomly losing mobs is to prevent them from crossing chunk borders (you can read about finding chunk borders on the wiki). However, this is not a guarantee or a fix. Positioning mobs away from chunk borders does not mean you will never lose a persistent mob again. Many cases of mobs randomly despawning remain unexplained by the tracker staff and player community.
Updated description by [Mod] GoldenHelmet July 22, 2020
This ticket is used as parent for all otherwise unexplained mob disappearances. It covers mobs disappearing related to nether portal travel, long distance single-dimension travel, crashes, realm lag, and any other circumstance, except for the specific circumstances covered by MCPE-88322, MCPE-66818, MCPE-51837, MCPE-16863, and MCPE-108568, MCPE-141539, and MCPE-144208.
Some random mob despawns can be explained by the mobs crossing chunk borders between auto-saves. Other random mob despawns are reported for mobs that were unable to cross chunk borders.
I have attached a test world that can be used to reproduce despawning on chunk borders due to a crash with the following steps to reproduce:
- Load [EX] Chunk border despawn demo.mcworld
. - Press the button to spawn a villager.
- Save & quit, then reload, to confirm that the the villager is kept in the world save.
- Open the world, flip the lever, and start a stopwatch.
- After about 10-15 seconds, close Minecraft without exiting the world (for example, in Windows 10 press alt-F4).
- Reopen Minecraft and reopen the test world.
Expected result
The villager is still present.
Actual result
Sometimes the villager will be gone. I estimate this occurs about once out of 20 attempts. You can see the entire sequence in Chunk border despawn demo.mp4
.
What happens when the villager disappears is that sometime between flipping the lever and force-closing the game, the chunk in which the player is located gets auto-saved and the chunk to the right does not. You can verify this by observing that a honey block is also missing--the fact it was pushed out of the left chunk by the piston is saved, but the fact it was pushed into the right chunk is not.
Original description
When I go to Nether and I went back my horses an my animal that I feed is disappear
Edit by Zeb: When playing on multiplayer, entities can despawn when you travel to the Nether and back to the Overworld.
Keep in mind that naturally-spawned monsters and animals that have never been interacted with are SUPPOSED to despawn. When testing this bug, please make sure to interact with monsters or animals you're observing first, by tempting them with food, breeding, or name-tagging them. This is not necessary for villagers or iron golems.
(UPDATE: This repro is also tracked separately at MCPE-88322.)
I have reproduced this issue for pets using the following steps. It requires two players. (Possibly a ticking area could work instead of a second player.)
- Create a nether portal in the overworld at 800 Y 800.
- Have a second player travel through the portal and keep the nether-side portal within their simulation distance. It should be near 100 Y 100
- Spawn and tame a parrot, dog, or cat in the overworld.
- Make sure the pet is not sitting.
- Push the pet into the portal.
- Have the second player travel to 800 Y 800 in the nether and observe as first player moves around.
Expected results
The second player sees the pet come out of the portal in the nether. The pet stands still because it's owner is not present.
Actual results
The pet is sent its owner's overworld coordinates in the nether. So if the owner is at Overworld 808 70 808, the pet is sent to 808 70 808 in the nether. When the the second player observes there, they see the pet in the nether track the coordinates of its owner in the overworld (if it has not been killed by being sent to a dangerous place). The result may be easiest to see if you use parrots in a flat world and reverse the dimensions, but it works in either direction with all pets.
Notes
The following scenarios seem to work correctly:
- If a second player is not present to keep the other-side portal loaded, the pet will appear in the portal with the owner when the owner comes through.
- If the pet is sat down before being pushed through the portal, it will appear in the portal in the other dimension when pushed through.
- If the pet is standing up but not pushed through the portal, it will come through the portal with the owner.

Based on the reported (and confirmed by GinePik above) fix for the nether portal despawn issue in the 1.16.220.52, we will resolve this report as "fixed" when that fix makes it to a release version.
The issue with pets being sent to the wrong coordinates when another player is in the other dimension will continue to be tracked at MCPE-88322.

I found that this is due to the wolf trying to teleport to the owner's coordinates in the wrong dimension.
For example, Player 1 and Player 2 are in the overworld, going to the nether. Player 1 owns a wolf and pushes the wolf into a nether portal without making it sit (so it is free to move around in the nether, though it is currently frozen in an unloaded nether chunk since no players are in the nether). Then, Player 2 goes into the nether while Player 1 stays behind. As soon as Player 2 loads the nether, Player 1's wolf is able to move and realizes that it's far away from its owner and needs to teleport, so it teleports near Player 1's coordinates in the nether. The problem here is Player 1 is still in the overworld, so the wolf not only teleports to the wrong location, but it's now in yet another unloaded (possibly ungenerated) nether chunk.
I've had this happen to me with several wolves and I've found it also happens in the End. I've found wolves stuck inside walls and nearly falling into the void because they attempted to teleport to overworld coordinates in the nether/end.
If JW Banks is correct (I haven't tested yet), this is a similar issue to
MCPE-44104.I actually rediscovered the same steps JW Banks describes above and posted them on
MCPE-66818a few months ago, since I had forgotten about this ticket. See this comment.Thank you for your report!
However, this issue has been temporarily closed as Awaiting Response
Is this still an issue in the latest version?
This ticket will automatically reopen when you reply.

Bug still happens the same way. I made a test world to make reproducing easier.
Steps to reproduce
Expected result
The parrot appears in the portal in the nether near player 2.
Observed result
"Parrot fell out of the world." The parrot dies in the void under the nether because when it loads in the nether near player 2 it immediately teleports to player 1's coordinates (around 70, -60, 4) even though it is not in the same dimension. This works with any pet that teleports.
Happened to me twice, still isn't fixed. Note: seems happen with all pets.
