We are tracking an issue with all or nearly all mobs in the area around the player vanishing when the world is reloaded in versions 1.17.30 through 1.18.2 Hotfix at MCPE-144208. Please do not comment here if that describes your experience.
Please limit comments to New information about the issue. A short list of what is most helpful and what is not is listed below. Please take the time to read this brief list before commenting.
A list of mobs you have lost is not helpful information. We know this bug can impact any mob, we know that leashed mobs that despawn will leave behind a leash knot, and we know that when villagers despawn their beds and workstations remain linked to the missing villager until you break them or 20 minutes pass. What might be helpful are details about things like
- what you were doing leading up to the mobs disappearing
- single vs. multiplayer, local vs server/realm
- how far you traveled
- how long the current or previous play session lasted
- whether the despawns were near a player spawn point or if you had changed your player spawn point during the session,
- if you experienced lag or anything else abnormal.
Some cases of persistent mobs despawning can be traced to them crossing chunk borders between saves, so one way to guard against randomly losing mobs is to prevent them from crossing chunk borders (you can read about finding chunk borders on the wiki). However, this is not a guarantee or a fix. Positioning mobs away from chunk borders does not mean you will never lose a persistent mob again. Many cases of mobs randomly despawning remain unexplained by the tracker staff and player community.
Updated description by [Mod] GoldenHelmet July 22, 2020
This ticket is used as parent for all otherwise unexplained mob disappearances. It covers mobs disappearing related to nether portal travel, long distance single-dimension travel, crashes, realm lag, and any other circumstance, except for the specific circumstances covered by MCPE-88322, MCPE-66818, MCPE-51837, MCPE-16863, and MCPE-108568, MCPE-141539, and MCPE-144208.
Some random mob despawns can be explained by the mobs crossing chunk borders between auto-saves. Other random mob despawns are reported for mobs that were unable to cross chunk borders.
I have attached a test world that can be used to reproduce despawning on chunk borders due to a crash with the following steps to reproduce:
- Load [EX] Chunk border despawn demo.mcworld
. - Press the button to spawn a villager.
- Save & quit, then reload, to confirm that the the villager is kept in the world save.
- Open the world, flip the lever, and start a stopwatch.
- After about 10-15 seconds, close Minecraft without exiting the world (for example, in Windows 10 press alt-F4).
- Reopen Minecraft and reopen the test world.
Expected result
The villager is still present.
Actual result
Sometimes the villager will be gone. I estimate this occurs about once out of 20 attempts. You can see the entire sequence in Chunk border despawn demo.mp4
.
What happens when the villager disappears is that sometime between flipping the lever and force-closing the game, the chunk in which the player is located gets auto-saved and the chunk to the right does not. You can verify this by observing that a honey block is also missing--the fact it was pushed out of the left chunk by the piston is saved, but the fact it was pushed into the right chunk is not.
Original description
When I go to Nether and I went back my horses an my animal that I feed is disappear
Edit by Zeb: When playing on multiplayer, entities can despawn when you travel to the Nether and back to the Overworld.
Keep in mind that naturally-spawned monsters and animals that have never been interacted with are SUPPOSED to despawn. When testing this bug, please make sure to interact with monsters or animals you're observing first, by tempting them with food, breeding, or name-tagging them. This is not necessary for villagers or iron golems.

Steps to reproduce
- Collect a large number of non-persistent mobs within 24 blocks of the player. For example, run a spawner-based mob farm without killing the mobs.
- Save and quit.
- Make sure the world is set to simulation distance 6 or higher.
- Reopen the world.
Expected result
The mobs would still be there for you.
Actual result
The mobs are gone.
Analysis
This is just like MCPE-66818. It is due to the fact that instant despawn chunks are defined as those chunks which are bordered by any chunks that were not ticked on the last tick. When you load a world, none of the chunks around you have been ticked yet, so on the first tick every chunk is an instant despawn chunk.
- I left my character within spawning proximity of a Skeleton Spawner for ~2.5 hours.
- This generated hundreds of Skeletons.
- I wanted my friend to join and watch as I killed all of the Skeletons at once, using a Splash Potion of Healing.
- At some point while "AFKing" my Microsoft account became disconnected, this made it so my friend was unable to join me with the world in it's current state.
- I pressed the "+" start button.
- I properly saved the world and let the saving process complete in entirety.
- I pressed the Nintendo Switch's "Home" button and went to the Switch's "Main Menu".
- I highlighted the Minecraft App.
- I manually closed the Minecraft App.
- I ensured my internet connection was functioning properly.
- I relaunched the Minecraft App (I do use a physical cartridge but did not reset it in the cartridge slot and think it's irrelevant to this software glitch).
- I allowed my Microsoft account time to "log in".
- I reloaded the SAME Minecraft world I had just left less than 1 minute before, with HUNDREDS of trapped Skeletons.
- Upon regaining control of my character, I found that my Skeleton farm's trap "kill-pad" was completely empty...All the entities had been erased at some point while logging out, or logging back in. This NEVER occurred before this new 1.16 Mob De-Spawning algorithm change.
I suspect that this has something to do with how players are inserted from, and removed from the world while loading/leaving worlds. I believe that the world "loaded" while my player entity was not "in" it, yet...this allowed the mobs to despawn as no player was "within" their radius to keep them in the overworld. I also think that mobs spawned from Dungeon Spawners, or Spawners in general...should be exempt from the "Natural" mob spawn algorithm or have different values of some sort...They are not "Natural" mob spawns; they're forced due to the mob spawner and player proximity, not darkness or biome conditions.

@Robert Parker: villagers working at the wrong workstation is tracked at MCPE-56889.
@YaYa: villagers changing trades and professions after being traded with is tracked at MCPE-62080.
Those two issues have the same root cause: when a villager dies or leaves or disappears from a village some time after reloading while an unemployed villager is in the village, the unemployed villager will link to the newly-available workstation without updating its profession. Fortunately, that issue is reported to be fixed in the current beta.
@YaYa, re: Parrots and nether portals: what you describe seems to match MCPE-28234, but that ticket is old enough that it would be better for you to create a new ticket. Please include exact steps to reproduce the issue of parrots teleporting to you from a different dimension. The parrots sometimes disappearing partially fits MCPE-66818, so you may want to follow that ticket.
@Danny: the tickets you suggested for Yaya are for Java Edition, so they are not directly relevant.
@Gravity Boots & @Shannon Young: thank you for the video and the new theory about persistent entities moving into a chunk triggering despawns. I will update after I've watched the video.
@Ryan Dussinger: we have a fairly new report open on the name-tagged entity issue you describe. Please add any new information you have to MCPE-101295.
UPDATE: @Gravity Boots: when I follow your video link it says "This upload does not exist."
Re: Why doesn't this bug cause mobs to duplicate? It could be that whenever a mob with a given UniqueID number loads, it checks for and removes any mobs from neighboring chunks with matching UniqueID numbers. This could be part of the normal process for handling a mob moving from one chunk to another.
UPDATE #2: I've tested the nametagged mobs theory and the and the pushing a persistent mob into a chunk with other mobs theory. I made platform with 50 villagers and a few pets all named "Charlie," and I could not get any to disappear with different combinations of saving and loading, nether travel, and pushing new persistent mobs into the chunk.

I actually rediscovered the same steps JW Banks describes above and posted them on MCPE-66818 a few months ago, since I had forgotten about this ticket. See this comment.
This problem is not equivalent to MCPE-66818
Only mobs going through the same portal as the player will spawn.
If the player goes through a portal far enough away that it's not a valid exit for the original portal, only mobs that have entered the same portal will spawn. It happens regardless of simulation distance and mobs either spawn in their entirety or not at all.
Sometimes mobs can spawn from a different portal than the player (expected behaviour), but I don't know how to make that happen consistently.
Some cases described in comments on MCPE-66818 may have been due to this bug. I recall people at the time losing horses and then strangely finding them days later.
Looks like this was originally reported in MCPE-22340.
I do not agree that MCPE-174930 is part of this bug. That issue has to do with a rider teleporting back to a portal (after the ride breaks). With this bug the ride (the horse) may teleport. However, this teleporting is not directly triggered by riding. It seems to a result of the horse being sent to the wrong exit portal. I have been able to reproduce the horse going to the wrong exit portal by pulling the horse into the entrance portal with a lead. So, it is not riding, but the horse that is essential here.
This is likely the original issue behind MCPE-22340, and one of the issues commented/duplicate-linked on MCPE-66818. I am not sure if the repro with horses requires that the horse had ridden a minecart through the nether at some point as in the repro with any mob. Once a horse is affected by the bug, it continues to exit from the wrong portals even after relogging. I believe the same issue affects donkeys and mules, for example see REALMS-5403.
I was able to reproduce this in a brand new world with the horse coming out of a different portal within sight of the players': Horse goes to wrong portal v2.mp4
Player and horse enter at OW 4 Y -15
Player exits at Nether 8 Y 8
Horse exits at Nether -6 Y -15
This also happens if you push the horse into the portal or pull it in with a lead instead of riding it in and dismounting. Unfortunately, I do not recall if I ever put this horse in a minecart.
If you continue with the mob from the part II repro and repeat steps (5) - (7), then the mob will disappear. It is actually teleporting to the portal nearby which it should have come out of in step (10) the first time through. If you then go through that portal you will find the mob in the overworld. See https://youtu.be/b0oNog68-Ic?si=t8UIAiim3EKQT5CN for demonstration.
Do you Guys know when Bugs like these get fixed? right now i am taking a break from Minecraft till this is patched because I dont want to risk losing more villagers/mobs
Is there a workaround for this bug, maybe only transporting the next mob, after having moved away the first mob from the vicinity of the portal, does this work ? I am asking this, because one of my villagers had accidentally passed through a Nether portal. I found it there and trapped it in a boat near the portal, and thought, oh nice, just transporting one more villlager through the portal, and I can found a villlage in the Nether. But none of the villagers I tried to transport to the Nether by smashing boats arrived there, they simply disappeared.
I know the duplicates show platforms than XBox One so It clearly affects more than that, but I will just be explicit anyway. This also affects Windows 10. In my case I am trying to use a villager breeder in the nether and trasport the babies to the overworld. The breeder works wonders, but going through the portal makes the babies and cats disappear. Some people mention they get one to go through, or half to go through, etc...
I get none to go through successfully. Though i am building the breeder in a spot where babies will arrive in the overworld inside an existing game generated village. So it appears if any entity is around the portal, whether they were game generated, spawned in by breeding or have recently travelled through the portal or not makes no difference. If something is on the other side, the entity doesnt make it through.
This bug has not only influenced the nether portal, but also the ender portal. It costs my 100 villagers;(
Hope can be fixed as soon as possible.
plz fix it TAT we dont want to lose more mob farms or sands orz
This will make the game lose a lot of ways to play.
it may make a part of players lose their ways of games*
*
I mean this is...this bug will actually ruin all the hard works we’ve done as BE players on the development of mob tower
. No doubt that all BE players are hoping Mojang would actually pay attention to this bug and fix it soon.
这个bug将绝对会毁掉BE玩家一切对刷怪塔的研究成果。毋庸置疑,所有的BE玩家都在迫切地等待Mojang这个bug的修复,并希望Mojang能够重视。
Does this happen to mobs that have their persistence set? (tempted, name-tagged, tamed, bred, etc)
It does.
Affects Win 10 too (persistence). Also is random which makes it hard to track. You can send two villagers through ok, but send another set later and one or more will despawn/vanish randomly. Have also had existing name-tagged villagers despawn in base after returning from Nether, but again this is random. A temporary fix is that I always save game before sending through mobs/going exploring new Nether biomes - and reload if I lose any. Not perfect but ok as we are in Beta...
I have the experience of the mobs being in limbo. Adding a 4th mob into portal respawned the mobs and dropped the boats I used. This was after saving and assuming they were lost. Apparently they are stuck in between the 2 portals and have not actually despawned.
This seems like a cause for a potential memory leak if what Kris Beauchamp said is the case.
I am on Bedrock Dedicated Server Linux 1.16 with the same issue. It doesn't always happen, but it often does.
I see there are numerous reports of this across the 1.16 betas that are marked as duplicate and linked to this case.
I have just experienced this for the 3rd time in 2 days with mine arts and villagers when trying to bring them back to my overworked tradehall.
1.16 XB1X with latest dedicated server software
Thiss happening to my drowned farm. They go through the portals and disappear. The tutorial said it was about 500 drowneds an hour
I'm having the same problem in my drowned farm, but only when it runs on simulation distance 10. When I reduce the simulation distance to 4, nothing despawns!
This appears to be the same issue that was reported in
MCPE-22340. That ticket was closed in a bulk resolve due to not being updated.New duplicate report
MCPE-101972corroborates Peter Schinko's statment above that this only occurs on simulation distance 6 and higher, and does not occur on simulation distance 4. I wonder if it might be related to how the game determines a "simulation edge" chunk, i.e. perhaps it treats the chunk where the exit portal is located as a simulation edge on its first tick b/c the chunks around have not loaded yet, and then it applies simulation edge despawning rules to everything that comes out of the portal?Update: I am 99% sure that this is indeed what is happening. The attached test world, MCPE-66818 Nether trident farm.mcworld
can be used to demonstrate this. (It contains the beginnings of a drowned farm I was designing and has 332 mobs in limbo.)
Steps to reproduce
Expected results
Each time you load the world and go through the portal, there will be hundreds of drowned.
Actual results
On sim6 and above, only mobs with persistence load when travelling through the portal, and the rest despawn.
Note
Unfortunately, this can't explain the original report that villagers were disappearing when sent going through a portal, and it wouldn't explain reports of tamed animals and name-tagged mobs never coming out of a portal either. If anyone can reproduce those scenarios, it would be great to get a test world that we can examine.
(UPDATE: This repro is also tracked separately at
MCPE-88322.)I have reproduced this issue for pets using the following steps. It requires two players. (Possibly a ticking area could work instead of a second player.)
Expected results
The second player sees the pet come out of the portal in the nether. The pet stands still because it's owner is not present.
Actual results
The pet is sent its owner's overworld coordinates in the nether. So if the owner is at Overworld 808 70 808, the pet is sent to 808 70 808 in the nether. When the the second player observes there, they see the pet in the nether track the coordinates of its owner in the overworld (if it has not been killed by being sent to a dangerous place). The result may be easiest to see if you use parrots in a flat world and reverse the dimensions, but it works in either direction with all pets.
Notes
The following scenarios seem to work correctly:
I tested my drowned farm in Simulation distance of 6 and they didn't despawn when i went to to kill chamber in the beta 1.16.220.52.
Based on the reported (and confirmed by GinePik above) fix for the nether portal despawn issue in the 1.16.220.52, we will resolve this report as "fixed" when that fix makes it to a release version.
The issue with pets being sent to the wrong coordinates when another player is in the other dimension will continue to be tracked at
MCPE-88322.This is still happening occasionally in the 1.16.230.50 beta. Tested by sending naturally spawned mobs thru a portal to the nether on sim 6.
@silentsisperer: could you provide more precise steps to reproduce?
I don't think it's the same problem. I have found mobs (most of the time in my experience) reappear from portals used by the player and otherwise disappear. See
MCPE-116572which differs in a few details from present issue.Niels Peter Rasmussen: (replying here rather than
MCPE-116572b/c that was resolved as a duplicate)I tested what I think you mean, and found that non-persistent mobs do not necessarily despawn if you go through a different portal. They despawn if you go through a portal that puts you far enough from the portal where the mobs come out that they are in instant despawn chunks or beyond the instant despawn radius on sim4. Also, if you come out of a portal more than 32 blocks from where the mobs come out then they will be subject to the random despawn timer. Those outcomes are just due to the despawn mechanics working as intended.
Possibly affects 1.18.2. Tested on sim 4 singleplayer by sending naturally spawned mobs and other entities through a portal. When the player goes to the nether, all the naturally spawned mobs are gone but other entities such as items and spawn egg mobs are there. The portal is already within sim distance when the player enters the nether, and the coordinates of the portals are correct. The naturally spawned mobs can occasionally load properly, but I haven’t found a cause for it.
Edit: the y coordinates of the nether side portal were about 50 higher than the overworld side, after lowering it to the same y level the naturally spawn mobs did load correctly.
Kimowin: please create a new report for the specific case you can reproduce.
I can replicate this as well. Sim 4 and above giving this issue in 1.18.1 on multiplayer - blaze farm blazes lost once they get pushed through portal.
@golden[Mod] GoldenHelmet When you create a new ticket for this bug, as I created for Java edition 1.18.1, the automod resolves it as duplicate.
Jakk Maydan: This is a Bedrock Edition report. If you're having an issue in Java Edition then this report is irrelevant to your issue and your issue is irrelevant to this report.
The report you created in the Java project was resolved by a human moderator asking for more information.
I’m experiencing this issue on 1.19.0 for Xbox One. Villagers are disappearing when going from the nether into the overworld, whether being released from a vehicle like a minecart or a boat or being pushed through manually. The problem occurs whether on single player or in a Realm. The mobs do not reappear after using the portal several times. The problem still occurs if I reply before going through the portal. The problem occurs in many different places that I’ve tested around a copy of my world in creative mode, but the area where the issue was discovered is around the 32, 180, 180 area. I’ll try to get a world download into the thread asap.
We do not reopen reports for issues that were confirmed to be fixed in a release version. Please search for an open report that is more specific to your case, or create a new one.
