Before version 1.3 player icons on maps updated very frequently (most notably when rotating and holding the map). However, since then they update less frequently, resulting in a perceived laggy behavior.
Steps to Reproduce:
- Get an empty map item
- Use the map, so that the player icon is visible
- Move or rotate the player around
Observed Behavior:
The player icon will look very choppy and stutter when it updates.
Expected Behavior:
The map icon would consistently and clearly update, so that the player is constantly aware of their position on the map, and does not need to stop moving to ensure the map icon properly and entirely represents their position.

Don't quote me on this, but I think this is intentional game design. This Was Back In 1.13 where treasure maps were introduced, it would've probably been noticeable by now.

I don't think this is intentional because I can't see my player icon if the X overlaps it.
The player icon appears behind the icon for any structure, not limited to buried treasure. This was verified by testing with mansion and monument icons using ocean and woodland explorer maps.
Confirmed in 1.21.3
