No smoke particles show after mobs die in certain conditions
The bug
After killing a mob, the smoke particles that should appear when the mob despawns after death don't show.
This seems to happen mostly when killing naturally spawned mobs in a newly created world. This may also happen when reloading world and killing naturally spawned mobs. Also, if you reload the world when the mob death animation plays, the smoke particles will not show.
How to reproduce
- Create a new world.
- Get a sword.
- Find a naturally spawned mob.
- Kill it. No smoke particles will appear.
- Spawn a mob with a spawn egg.
- Kill it. Smoke particles will appear.

Weird, cannot reproduce this in 19w46a. Even with a sword enchanted with fire aspect and sharpness.
What is your "Particles" setting set to? Also, what is your graphics card?
Hmm... I tested this again. It doesn't work all the time. It seems to be easiest to reproduce in a newly created world by killing naturally spawned mobs.
I have set to show all particles.
