Pointed dripstones cause extreme durability damage to helmets
The Bug
When a pointed dripstone falls on a player with a helmet, the helmet loses a lot of its durability.
How to reproduce
- Put on a new netherite helmet
- Go into survival mode
- Stand centered on a block and run these commands in order:
/setblock ~ ~30 ~ minecraft:dripstone_block /setblock ~ ~29 ~ minecraft:pointed_dripstone[vertical_direction=down] /setblock ~ ~30 ~ air
- If you don't die, take a look at your helmet
notice it took a great deal of damage
if you tried a new leather helmet, it would break on first try

Prior to snapshot 21w20a, helmets used to cause extra durability damage when they fell on a player. This has been the case since release 1.4.6 when anvils were first changed to do more damage to helmets than other pieces of armor. This mechanic was likely broken due to MC-206839 being fixed since anvils and pointed dripstone have a similar damaging mechanic when falling.
How to reproduce:
- On any version from 1.4.6 to 21w19a, drop an anvil from around ~10+ blocks up onto yourself. Notice the durability lost.
- On any version from 21w20a or later, drop an anvil from the same height. The durability lost on the helmet will be much less than expected.
Edited the summary to reflect the actual issue reported. Although I do think this is working as intended now due to the fix of MC-206839.
Do you mean in terms of durability, or hp dmg?
I edited it now, I meant durability.
Can confirm.
Could be intentional, but it's a little harsh.
I can still reproduce in snapshot 20w51a. I've attached a video demonstrating this: MojiraDHelmet.mp4
The damage to the helmet depends on the height that the dripstone has to fall before it hits, as well as the amount of falling connected dripstones. Similarly to the damage you take if you're the one wearing the helmet.
So a setup of just a single falling dripstone a couple of blocks above does not seem to reproduce this issue, but a much higher height such as 20 blocks, can instantly kill you and damage the helmet by about half its durability.
Can confirm in 21w06a.
It also applies to all types of helmets, not just netherite.
