Breath meter animation with Respiration is jittery
How to reproduce:
- Wear any helmet that is enchanted with Respiration 3.
- Put yourself underwater and look at the animation of the bubbles slowly popping. Do not enter swimming mode or move around, otherwise you have to exit and re-enter.
- Notice that the pop animation is very jittery, goes back and forth, and sometimes plays multiple times for one bubble (you might have to wait a 2-3 bubbles for it to happen).

May relate to MC-261324 as it also can cause the popping animation to reappear.
The bug
The sprite known from 23w31a onwards as "gui/sprites/hud/air_bursting.png" can appear when the player exits water as the air bar refills. This is not expected behaviour, as this icon is intended to show a bubble popping, and should only be displayed when losing air, not gaining it.
How to reproduce
- Enter water in Survival/Adventure/Hardcore, etc.
- Remain within for enough time
- Exit the water
- Keep an eye on the air bar
Expected results
When bubbles regenerate, they should do so instantaneously with the normal full "bubble" icon.
Actual results
In some cases, the "popped" bubble icon can be seen when the air bar refills.
Relates to MC-261324 and MC-265218.
The bug
When a helmet with Respiration is equipped, the "popping" icon for the air bar will remain on screen for a longer period of time than if no Respiration armor is equipped.
Expected results
The "pop" icon would remain on screen for the same amount of time, regardless of equipped enchantments.
Actual results
Respiration extends the length of time this sprite can be seen.
Discovered while testing MC-265218 and MC-261324. In creative mode and spectator mode, players promptly cease burning, leading one to anticipate their air supply would replenish. However, the air gauge remains static, neither decreasing nor increasing. Furthermore, transitioning into spectator mode causes the player to thaw out in powder snow. Nevertheless, if the switch to creative or spectator mode occurs while submerged, the air level does not regenerate. Whether this constitutes a feature request is debatable, but I perceive it as an inconsistency warranting consideration by Mojang.
steps to reproduce
/scoreboard objectives add playerAir air
- Place a repeating command block and power it
- Put the following command into the repeating command block:
execute as @a run title @s actionbar {"score":{"name":"@s","objective":"playerAir"}} - Enter underwater while in survival or adventure mode
- Switch to creative or spectator mode
Observed: Upon entering creative or spectator mode, your Air does not replenish. Additionally, returning to survival mode does not restore your Air, allowing for the issue to be reproduced without commands.
Expected: Your Air would refill when in creative mode.
