OSX: "Minecraft quit unexpectedly" on launcher startup
This seems to be a common issue on Mac OS X 10.8.5 - Temporarily, you need to use the legacy launcher and have Java installed: http://launcher.mojang.com/download/Minecraft_legacy.dmg
Please be aware that Mac OS X 10.8 is no longer supported, the minimum requirement has risen to OS X 10.9: https://help.mojang.com/customer/portal/articles/325948

Here's a fix. Inside the minecraft folder ([username]/Library/Application Support/minecraft), theres a file called launcher.jar. Open it and theres the launcher. Set up a shortcut to access it quickly.

Duplicate of MCL-5523
This does not appear to be a duplicate of MCL-5523. That bug is specific to MacOS 10.8
Duplicate of MCL-5523
Duplicate of MCL-5523
Duplicate of MCL-5523
This is not a dup of MCL-5523. That bug is for OS X 10.8.5. This crash is on 10.12.5. How about fixing the issue? It have been like list for to long now.
This maybe shouldn't be marked as a dupe of MCL-5523. I have been running the launcher for some time now without the debug window, and it never crashes. That suggests to me that the crash I've been observing is a bug related to the debug window.
In February I launched Minecraft, and the program downloaded the new launcher. I then experienced an issue, which I reported: MCL-5557.
I am still having this issue.
On August 14, I launched Minecraft again. It downloaded a new version of the launcher. I am still experiencing the same issue, to wit: The Launcher window only says "Loading" and goes no further. I am not getting a crash or a bug report. The application does NOT hang.
To reproduce: Open the new launcher in OSX 10.10.5. I don't know what else to do to get it to reproduce.
NOTE: My prior report was tagged and closed as a duplicate of MCL-5523. But MCL-5523 appears to be an issue with 10.8.5. I repeat, I am running OSX 10.10.5.
We have a similar issue already tracked here (MCL-5523) although it's weird that this only happens for certain versions for you.
In the meantime, you should be able to use the old launcher in order to play snapshots: http://launcher.mojang.com/download/Minecraft_legacy.dmg
Please check whether that one works.
Please do not mark issues as private, unless your bug report is an exploit or contains information about your username or server.
Thank you for your report!
However, this issue is a Duplicate of MCL-5523.
If you have additional information, please add it to that report.
Please search before reporting, as it's likely that one exists already.

Your computer does not meet the System Requirements for Minecraft, as the processor is too old.
However, you may be able to resolve this issue by following the instructions at MCL-5523

Exact same issue here for m under OS X 10.8.5. Works on another Mac under 10.9, but 10.8 seems to be no go.
Then it's not a Minecraft issue ?
Not sure what you mean with Minecraft issue but the launcher crashes. My crash log looks identical to Gavin's. Seems to be a problem with the Chromium used by the launcher if that is what you mean?
Sorry, I meant this isn't a Launcher issue but more a macOS issue (Runs under 10.9 , crashes under 10.8) ?
Well, I haven't tried it with a newer OS on the same computer. Can do that tomorrow when I have my fat external disk with all OS X versions. (I need to run 10.8 on my laptop because of old toolchains necessary for work.) My guess is that it is a compatibility problem with Chromium and OS X. I.e. the problem occurs somewhere between MCL, Chromium and 10.8. But I haven't looked closer so I reserve the right to be completely wrong. (Does Minecraft have an official requirement on minimum OS X version?)
"Sorry, I meant this isn't a Launcher issue but more a macOS issue (Runs under 10.9 , crashes under 10.8) ?"
Really?
Of Couse is that a mc launcher bug...
Then before my Launcher automaticly updated the contens of today it was working fine.
Fair enough.
Same issue here. Some sort of compatibility problem between the updated Launcher and 10.8.5 in my opinion.
I have the same issue, however I use Mac OS X 10.11.6
Any infos?
Is there a way to downgrade the launcher, and play mc?
I'm in the same boat. Was able to play last night and now I can't. I have Mac 10.8.5.
Are you not supporting 10.8.5 anymore? Is there a way to revert?
I was successful with the legacy launcher, although the Minecraft game complains about using an old version of Java now: https://minecraft.net/en-us/download/alternative
Using the legacy launcher and playing for some hours now successfully. Still think devs should try to make it work with 10.8.5, though!
Exactly the same here, please come up with a solution. I mean, I thought forgetting my passwords, security questions, and deleting the email account was bad enough.
Same here. So, what can I do?
Same problem here.
I've been making due with the legacy launcher via bootstrap, but it's a bit of a pain and I'm worried that future mod loader versions might run into compatibility issues. My computer's too ancient for an OS update, so I'm hoping this bug gets found and squashed soon!
Same issue, the launcher crashes without fail every time I start up the game. I attached the crash log since I enabled that stuff on my macbook.
I have the same problem. How do I get/run the legacy launcher?
My bug was marked as a dupe of this one, but I'm not so sure.
5523 is about a crash when starting the launcher or when starting the game from the launcher.
I'm experiencing something different. (
MCL-7881) For me, I have the launcher setup to stay open with the game and also open a debug window. The launcher doesn't crash until AFTER I quit the GAME.It's not obvious to me that those are the same thing.
Also, I think the title of 5523 is a bit misleading. I realize it's what the OS says, but at first I thought my bug had been marked as a dupe of a game crash bug. And it's ambiguous. "On startup" of what? The game or the launcher itself? That's not actually the case with my report either.
Just like pretty much everyone else here, I have also experienced this problem since the day it started. It has been over HALF A YEAR! Give us a fix, Mojang! If you're going to discontinue support for the legacy launcher, then fix the one you want us all to use!
Still waiting. Legacy launcher doesn't even launch Minecraft anymore. Not cool!
Legacy Launcher still launches MC for me. It wasn't working for me last month, but it sorted itself out.
Legacy launcher says:

I can't start Minecraft for my son, and he is a real pain in the ... wo his favorite game. Please help me out
Monica, do "VOTE" on the ticket!
Peter, this thread is for the current Minecraft launcher, not the legacy launcher. Besides, I just double-checked, and my legacy launcher started up Minecraft without a problem. I don't know what's going on with it, but if you give it an hour or two, it should fix itself.
Laura M. I believe the comment by Peter is fair, given that he is responding to the fix offered up by the moderator note.
Has anyone else who is also having this problem found a fix that works?
The only thing I've figured is updating the Mac OS beyond Mountain Lion. Thing is, not only is the new Mac interface absolutely hideous, but mods become a thousand times harder to install. Plus, not every Mac can upgrade to anything beyond Mountain Lion, basically requiring people to buy a whole new computer just for one game. I wish Mojang would fix the launcher already. This problem has been present for almost a year and they're still in no hurry to patch it.
So no meaningful resolution to this problem, but mojang is now redirecting new reports of this error to other "resolved" threads that don't actually work. Well, looks like I'll be stuck playing 1.12 for the next four or five years as I can't replace a computer for just this game. Awesome.
Wow guys, do you know what day it is? It's February 7th, meaning it has been exactly one year since Mojang updated Minecraft's new launcher and shut all of us out! What's more, this issue has pretty much been mostly, if not entirely, ignored. I really miss the good old days when game companies actually cared about their players and bugs actually got fixed.
I recently updated to High-Sierra and there was also a new java update that has since fixed the issue for me personally. If you haven't tried that, I'd see how it goes.
I'm running Mac OS High Sierra, and I have never had a problem installing mods – if anything, it's easier. Just create a new game directory and do all your crap in there.
You don't need to update your Mac OS.
In your Minecraft launcher, go to your world settings and turn off resolution, it will fix this bug temporarily - I also don't understand why Mojang are saying the Mac OS crash on launch bugs are "resolved" when this has been a bug since last year and they haven't even told us why or what is causing it.
This bug is a hopper bug and it's not a resource pack issue.
I re-tried installing Forge on another Mac in my house with Sierra, and encountered none of the issues I had, previously. Where before it would create a folder instead of bringing up the install window for Forge, whatever was causing that has now resolved itself. Probably a software update, like David Heyes said. At this point, I'm finally breaking down and updating since my computer is new enough to do so. So sorry to those of you who can't update, and I wish you all the best. Maybe Mojang will quit ignoring their Mac users someday, but until then, good luck everybody!
it happens alot to me too!
This is not RESOLVED. A clean install I get this. I am not running 10.8.x I am running the latest 10.14.3. Please fix this bug. It is not okay that this has been opened for 2 years. I have this issue on a CLEAN NEW INSTALL of 10.14.3
Since this is a very generic error for Mac, I will close this issue, since it originally was meant for the 10.8-related bug. If you are still having issues with your Minecraft on Mac, please consult the Mojang Support Center first, and if they cannot figure out why your game is crashing, please come back here and create a new report.
