Pistons are incorrectly activated when adjacent to a block that is adjacent to a power source that emits activation power (except for redstone blocks, which seem to be a special case), but the block is not powered by the power source.
Confirmed to affect pistons that are adjacent to blocks that are adjacent to redstone torches, observers, buttons, levers, pressure plates, and detector rails.
Ironically, this bug causes pistons to be powered by observers as if observers output strong power instead of activation power. So this bug actually makes observers more consistent with the Java edition when it comes to pistons. (They still only technically output activation power, though, so this is a piston bug.)
To Reproduce:
Place any block that strongly powers at least one other block and pay attention to the blocks that it also activates.
Place pistons adjacent to the activated blocks taking care to ensure they are not adjacent to any strongly powered blocks.
Observe that the pistons (regular or sticky) activate when they should not.

The MCPE counterpart of MC-107749, which was marked as WAI. (And then reverted to not WAI, and then later made WAI again due to community feedback. It remains the intended behavior as of 16w44a.) MCPE observers, in order to be consistent with the Java edition, should strongly power blocks, instead of only activating the blocks immediately in front of them. See attached picture for comparison.
Interestingly, observers already act as if they powered pistons through blocks because of MCPE-16286. So changing MCPE observers actually wouldn't break most flying machines. The community also seems to be in favor of changing observers as well, so I don't think there would be any backlash against a change to strong power.
I think it's actually a bug in MCPE (see MCPE-16286)
[Mojang] Adrian Östergård, as of 16w44a, the decision to make Java edition observers output activation power instead of strong power has been reverted, and observers in the Java edition now once again output strong power.
Should this issue be reopened? Changing MCPE observers to work differently wouldn't break any flying contraptions, since observers already act as if they powered pistons through blocks because of MCPE-16286.
So changing observers to output strong power would NOT break most flying contraptions, since the Java-edition behavior is already happening (when it comes to pistons) in MCPE because of a bug.
Solid/opaque blocks are supposed to all act the same in how they transmit redstone power. However, solid/opaque blocks that are also redstone components (droppers, dispensers, redstone lamps, & note blocks), power other components differently.
First of all, if you strongly power a solid component, then a powered rail or activator rail that is adjacent to a plus-shaped dust adj. to the solid component, then the rail will NOT be powered. See attached screenshots. If you replace the solid component with a normal solid block, the rails will be powered.
Second, it appears that MCPE-16286 does not occur when the block between the activation-power-source and the piston is a solid-component.
It seems like redstone components that are solid/opaque are coded differently/incorrectly or something. It is possible that looking into the code and finding the root causes could lead to the fix of both this bug and MCPE-16286. There may be other quirks with solid redstone components that I have yet to discover, but these are all that I've found so far.
Steps to reproduce:
- Create a setup with a powered/activator rail, single redstone dust, & solid redstone component like the ones in the attached screenshot.
- Power the solid component and see how the rails don't turn on.
To me, that screenshot doesn't look anything like what you are describing in the ticket description.

If so, that is a bug that occurred in 0.16.* and is now fixed (see MCPE-16286)
The setup you pictured in the attached screenshot won't work in MCPE or Java as far as I can tell, unless there's more out of sight.
Resolving as a duplicate of MCPE-16286 as I think what you are trying to build is based on a bug that has bee removed from the game now. See MCPE-16286 for further details.

I am sure that is implemented because the redstone torch will power the block, thus, passing its redstone signal to the piston.
This doesn't affect 0.15.2. It's a regression for 0.15.3.
Since I forgot to say it but will edit. Pretty sure it is a bug due to the block is not powered.
I think the block acts like redstone wire, but it redirect the power to pistons 6 ways.
I have passed on whether it's intended or not hopefully I will get an answer back.
As in Screenshot_2016-07-20-08-47-33, piston touching the blocks to the side of the redstone torch should not activate. (The piston touching the block above the torch works as intended and the redstone lamps built to the right work as intended).
This is definitely a bug. The block to which a torch is attached to should not be powered, and the block directly above the torch should receive strong power, but all other adjacent blocks should recieve weak power.
As demonstrated in Screenshot_2016-07-19-21-49-08.png, the block adjacent to the torch is only weakly powered, and so the piston should not be powered. If the block was strongly powered, the redstoen dust on top of the block would also be powered like the piston.
