Cats spawn inside grass path blocks and farmland
Cats in villages (at least, in converted villages) have a chance to spawn inside grass path blocks and farmland. This makes it extra hard to find and free them, or to kill them in order to make them relinquish beds they've claimed (see MCPE-44299). It doesn't happen every time, but it's fairly common.
I have provided a sample world where two cats have spawned inside two grass path blocks very close together. When you open it (in 1.11.0.9), you will be at coordinates -1408, 74, -428 and there will be two gold blocks floating beside you. They mark positions where a cat has spawned inside the grass path block below them.
Steps to reproduce:
- Open a 1.10 world in which a village was generated in 1.11.0.9. (It might also work in a new village generated in 1.11.0.9.)
- Run the command /kill @e[type=cat].
- Wait for some cats to spawn. (You can check with /testfor @e[type=cat,r=64].)
- Keep killing any cats you can find with a weapon.
- Eventually, you will either hear a cat but not be able to find it, or cats will stop spawning on the surface. Run the command /execute @e[type=cat,r=64] ~ ~ ~ setblock ~ 90 ~ gold_block.
- Look for gold blocks above grass path or farmland. Each will probably have a cat that spawned inside the block.
Expected result:
Cats spawn only on the ground or on roofs or other solid blocks.
Actual result:
Some cats spawn below ground inside grass paths.
Additional reproduction steps:
In a converted village, manually kill all the stray cats you can find. Repeat as replacements spawn. Eventually, you should hear a stray cat but not be able to find it. Dig 1 block deep around the area the sound is coming from and you will find it.

silentwisperer: I agree, and I use custom flat worlds and third-party editors myself when testing. But they can be misleading sometimes, so checking in vanilla is important.
I've reviewed the issues you mention in the updated description and your video that supports them to make a comprehensive list of the issues that still need attention, so that we can attempt to group them into bug reports appropriately. I see them as falling into the following groups:
- Mobs spawning on blocks that they shouldn't spawn on. This includes llamas spawning on cobblestone; llamas and horses spawning on stone; llamas, rabbits, and polar bears spawning on snow layers above stone; and turtles, polar bears, and rabbits spawning on stone-type blocks placed above frozen oceans. In the description you also said that cats spawn "on any block", but the video doesn't show that. I think it was an over-generalization, but see #3 below for the issue specific to cats.
- Mobs spawning underground. This includes llamas, horses, and rabbits spawning below stone. There's a complication here from the issue I discussed above in this reply to Eyeth, and which is being tracked at
MCPE-41273. Some of your test setups actually produce surface spawns instead of cave spawns,, but there wasn't enough evidence in the video to show that this was true in all cases, so we'll have to see if we can reproduce it as true cave spawns. - Cats spawning inside blocks. This is already being tracked at
MCPE-44442. - Raids not doing block checks. CornerHard confirmed this but didn't indicate whether it was intentional or a bug. We would like to have a new ticket for this, because spawning a raid is quite different from spawning a single mob or pack and the suppression of block checks could very well be intentional (though it might need some tweaking).
- Raids spawning underground. This is already being tracked at MCPE-45183. The issue with surface spawns that occur underground could also be at work here.
I'm omitting the issue of raids not taking damage on magma blocks, because you already reported that separately at MCPE-47518.
So as I see it, we would like to have a ticket created for each of numbers 1, 2, and 4.
New reports created, send some support their ways:3
Passive mobs spawn on any block: MCPE-47596
Raids spawn on any block: MCPE-47598
Other related reports, that need more support
Raids spawning underground in caves: MCPE-45183
Cats spawn inside grass path blocks and farmland: MCPE-44442
Cave mobs counted as surface mobs: MCPE-41273
That should about wrap things up here 👍
This maybe related to one of the following issues: MCPE-47598, MCPE-45183, MCPE-44442, MCPE-40783.
So, is this resolved now? The Bedrock 1.13.0 page on the Minecraft Wiki says "Village mobs (such as iron golems and cats) can no longer spawn inside of blocks. (MCPE-44442, MCPE-41886)" (citing this ticket).
If this is resolved, can iron golems spawn on top of slabs? Pre-1.11, I believe they couldn't spawn on top of any slab, top or bottom.
I’m having the same problem. I generated a new world for the new update (1.11). Cats keep spawning under dirt path blocks. It quite annoying when they cry non stop...
I have the same issue in 1.11.1, I freed about 7 cats trapped in blocks the other day.
After watching a YouTube video, it appears that cats will also spawn inside glass blocks, so presumably they will spawn inside any transparent block whether or not it's a solid full-size block.
The video also claimed that iron golems will spawn in glass blocks, but it didn't show an example of that.
Today I found a cat that had spawned inside a fence post that was part of a well in a pre-V&P village. It was pinned and unable to move off the block, though it did respond to me trying to feed it raw salmon. Strangely, it was making breaking particles with the texture of the cobblestone beneath it.

Cats spawn inside grass / path blocks. I kept hearing meow sounds, but I could not find a cat(s). I began breaking grass and path blocks where I heard the meow sound, out popped a cat and then another a few blocks away, see above video.
