Items that the player currently has equipped in their head slot are not detected by the recipe book, resulting in no possible recipes being displayed.
Steps to Reproduce:
- Run the following commands:
/item replace entity @p armor.head with minecraft:oak_planks 64
/recipe give @p *
- Open the crafting bench
- Open the recipe book GUI
Observed & Expected Results:
- No recipes are displayed (as long as the player has no other items in their inventory), despite the player having applicable items in their inventory.
- All recipes which are possible to craft wih 64 oak planks would be displayed, as the player has them within one of their inventory slots, and can use them to craft items.

Notes:
The recipe book can detect but not quickly move items which have a max_stack_size above their traditional limit, leading to hotkeys such as "shift + right-click" to not function as expected. This behavior is not exclusive to the crafting table, but any item attempted to move into a container slot (such as a furnace). All the applicable recipes show they can accept the items that the player has and all the buttons will be white instead of red, but cannot quick move the items.
Steps to Reproduce:
- Get the following item stack:
/give @p minecraft:oak_planks[minecraft:max_stack_size=99] 99
- Get all recipes:
/recipe give @p *
- Open the crafting table recipe book
- Try and quick-fill the crafting table with recipe ingredients
(Important: read note #1)
→
Crafting table grid is not filled, and no recipe can be made, despite having the items. - Repeat step 4, this time with a regular stack of oak planks
→
Items can (almost entirely) be quick-filled, and the item can be crafted.

For example, I had four stone in my offhand. It was only when I put the stone in a different inventory slot that the recipe for stone bricks appeared under craftable.
The issue is caused by the inablilty to access the off hand inside of other GUIs. You have to switch the item out of the off hand to be able to use it in crafting tables, anvils etc.
I noticed the same thing when trying to craft a jack-o-lantern. I had the carved pumpkin in my crafting grid and torches in my offhand. I will ADD that once I placed a torch in the crafting grid the jack-o-lantern recipe appeared in the book. So the contents of the crafting grid are counted toward recipes but not the offhand.
This also applies to the crafting grid, furnace slots and your cursor
