upon exiting (shift click) minecart, the range and criteria is drasticallyoff, up to 8 blocks away, and will place you outside of a room which the minecart is in. Bad for Nether travel... Could be linked to another version of this where minecarts fall thru blocks, I wont use them in nether till fixed as I replicated this twice, and the new dismount is placing my charactor way out of the area it used to... This may be related to MC-36482 (minecarts falling out of world)
*What I expected to happen...
was to get off the minecart and be inside the hallway,
**Describe what you thought should happen here
What I THOUGHT should happen? I THOUGHT I would get out of my minecart as I had done hundreds of times before and be standing next to the cart, only one block adjacent, I expected to be in ANY of the adjacent blocks, ON THE SAME LEVEL AS THE MINECART.
FIX THIS.
***What actually happened was...
I was placed into a block or outside of the room below the rail, under my bridge, which caused me to fall into lava below. (I was in the Nether)
Steps to Reproduce:
1. build a standard Nether tunnel for a minecart, (3x3x long as you need) with railway. Disembark area about 6x6 square, or smaller, totally encased walls. (safe area from ghasts) Float room in mid air above lava, to further show the urgency of this problem...
2. Sit in minecart, shift click to exit, and see what it does. Depending on the direction you are facing inside the minecart, you will be "recreated" in some distant places from the minecart, up to eight blocks away, or fall thru floor, if the engine cannot reason a location for you inside the space alotted for the minecart.
3. There are some halfslabs nearby to prevent pigmen spawning, but the disembarking area is not halfslabs or obstructed. I have several stops in the Nether, one stop "threw" me outside the covered hall, placing me outside my "safe tunnel"... the other placed me about eight blocks away, and the third placed me under the hallway, or inside of the block, at which point I fell into the lava below. Did I mention the falling into lava part? I fell, into lava, below, with all my garb, and stuff... below- way below the tracks... in a "safe" place... until now.

Duplicate of MC-36482. Note that this has been corrected for version 1.7.4. Make sure that both client and server are running this version.
When dismounting from a minecart or using activator rails in the North/West directions you get ejected forward; however, in the South/East directions you get ejected backwards (as I think should be the case). See the green spaces in the default case screenshot for where you get ejected currently.
There is further inconsistencies to which side you get ejected on between the N/W and S/E directions. They should probably all be made consistent (red wool in default case screenshot if South is the primary/correct one).
Things get further inconsistent with walls in the way which causes issues like MC-1489 (I've teleported through glass panes this way), where in some cases you eject on the track (which is good), but not always (especially in the north case as in the 'blocked case' screenshot). Not sure if this means it is also related to MC-36482. It seems like if you can't eject off the track, you should eject on the track behind the activator rail.
North is up in all screenshots - attached my test world as well (which shows minecart ejection is the same as activators and that the same issue occurs if the activator is powered by detection rail or not).
In negative X or Z locations, dismounting a minecart on a track next to a ledge, or on a 1 wide track can cause a player to dismount over an air block. This issue is similar to MC-36482, however the fix put in place making the dismount radius smaller doesn't fix the potential to harm players.
Example of the issue:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hEWbUOhESBs
(Note, this was recorded in the previous snapshot, but I've since tested it on the most current)
Steps to reproduce:
Move to an X and/or Z position that is negative and make a 1 wide North-South and a 1 wide East-west rail suspended in the air. Leaving the minecart (Depending on your location) will leave you falling from the air to whatever is below.
Attached a screenshot to show exactly where the dismount locations are (The redstone blocks indicate where the player dismounts)
Finally:
In MC-36482 ElNounch explained the problem and the fix by flooring the values, and I've had someone make said changes to his vanilla minecraft, and the minecarts in -x and -z were no longer deadly.
Just verified the issue still exists.
As a note: Dan Shemp (In the comments) built me a custom minecraft server.jar with a fix to the function that calculates where a player dismounts, as detailed by ElNounch in MC-36482, and it is working perfectly for my server.
How can we get some attention to this small, annoying and lethal bug? ![]()

Rather than duplicating a report, I'll add a different example of the bad dismount range and criteria:
The search order for valid exit points has been changed, and now appears to start from the furthest point from the cart in the area checked (appears to be a 7x7 square centered on the cart. Instead of searching compass points in sequence, starting beside the cart, it now searches blocks building up a pattern of lines side by side, seeming to start 3 blocks diagonally away from the cart.
It ignores objects blocking the intervening space, allowing a dismount to the opposite side of a wall from the cart.
The easiest way to reproduce the basic effect is to place a minecart on a rail located in a flat, open area, enter it, and hit shift to exit. You will not be beside the minecart.
Place a single block at the point you were deposited, re-enter the cart and exit, and see where the search decided to put you. Repeat placing a block in that point and so on, and you will see the pattern the search takes.
On a personal note: When you have a SMP world which uses a network of minecart stations for transport, finding all of them suddenly broken is a little demoralizing.
Thank you for this insight, it does clarify some of the issues I have, but it only means I am going to have to make a much bigger dismount room for the mine carts, which really seems absurd. The randomness of the search pattern is something that needs to be addressed, depending on your position in the mine cart, your dismount changes. Searching diagonally to the 3rd block away places you inside 90 percent of all minecrafter's Nether tunnel's walls, (3x3 tunnel generally)and going out to 7x7 means you are first placed outside said tunnel... even when there is room for dismount in the SAME open area as the minecart.
Mojang, fix it a little bit?
I suppose we're both going to be making extensive changes to our dismount rooms to work around this one if it's not fixed soonish. Walls, rails and pressure pads all need moving. You wouldn't believe such a small change could cause such trouble!
While it's very not ideal, the search pattern looks for a space 3 blocks tall. If you create a ceiling 2 blocks up in every space you don't want to be deposited (including the ones outside your room/tunnel), you can force it to pick your target space. But it ruins aesthetics in the station.
At least it's now here in the system so someone will see it.
This bug also applies to boats, and may even apply to horses and pigs.
Also, notably, you can be dismounted inside lava - the game doesn't bother to check, and will prefer to deposit you in lava northwest of the vehicle rather than safe ground southeast of it.
Here's a video demonstrating that: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ymMSjO_CXKI
After watching that video, I take back what I said: It's not a small change. For anyone using transport, this is a nightmare! It clearly doesn't even check if there's a floor anymore.
Able to reproduce in 1.7.2.
I have uploaded some screenshots. Figure 1 shows the pattern it uses to choose spaces to place the player. There's an issue where the area is one block too short on the south end, as in figure 2. I've also found a quirk where it prioritizes spots based on surrounding spots that should have no effect, as in figure 3.
There is an off-by-one bug that causes you to dismount -1 from the location that is checked when the coordinate is negative. This explains why it will sometimes place you on air or a non-solid block. Again, this only happens when the respective world coordinate is negative.
Confirmed.
This must be why I always end up outside behind the back wall of my stables when getting off a horse.
It seems they were trying to fix players nudging carts and boats when getting off and went out of the frying pan into the fire, so to speak. The old functionality was better, seriously.
I can say, i have this issue on the PC varsion as well.
Confirmed, very frustrating issue. It seems it starts finding spaces from the NW corner like this ("00" is the minecart and is also the 42nd place where you get dropped):
01 07 13 19 24 30 36
02 08 14 20 25 31 37
03 09 15 21 26 32 38
04 10 16 00 27 33 39
05 11 17 22 28 34 40
06 12 18 23 29 35 41
Some screenshots: http://fonyo.hu/img/mc
This is a VERY nasty bug and REALLY needs to be fixed.
also present with boats (happened on LAN), and I got dumped over 10 blocks from where I dismounted.
Clam lol, that is most likely an entirely different issue. The range of a minecart is much smaller than 10 blocks, and I've seen people dumped out over 50 blocks away usually where they were a minute or so before getting out.
I once spawned outside an adventure map's house (w/o a door)
I was forced to go into creative so i could fix the wall when i went in (since it was made of lapis lazuli)
took my minecart in the end. got out and got teleported over the edge and died...
I almost had not experience this issue in 1.6.4, but now it entirely breaks my minecart experience after upgrading to 1.7.2.
When getting off from the minecart on a track built in the air, now I usually fall down besides the track, as opposed to the behaviour in previous versions that placed me on the track.
Right, not a java programming expert here but why don't you simply create a code that searches for the closest minecart track (of any kind) that is not itself and dismantles the player to that location. And this is clean and simple as well. Tracks are always on solid blocks (I hope I'm right) and if you wanna be OCD with this code against failure and exceptions, if none of this true, it puts you at the location where you dismantled (where the minecart stopped)... With this, people can create things in a way that they count on logics of exiting minecarts. It would be pretty epic and appreciated by everyone.
Or, simply revert to the previous method of selecting where to dismount the player, which seemed to work and make sense. (Some of us depended on the logic that could put you directly beside the cart to activate a pressure plate.)
I just discovered that wrong placement (e.g., teleported outside the right-hand wall) happens when I'm looking at SOUTH direction on the minecart track.
Best spot for a player to be teleported when he exit the minecart is:
behind the minecart (make it a block and 1/2 so players will don't push the minecart)
in front (only if is empty space (no wall) and if behind is occupied by a wall)
right/left side (only if the behind or in front are occupied by a wall)
No, the best way was how it worked before. Many people have machines already set up that use the position you land after leaving the cart trigger other things. There is no need to change things now.
The general majority of players I've talked to prefer the old way (breaking the minecaft from inside) to left shift, regardless of this bug. That said, this bug is a HUGE issue that has caused me to stop playing this game altogether, as now there is no way to exit to minecarts in most areas of my server that don't put me in midair, or in lava. I don't want to walk/teleport around instead, and vastly modifying every minecart station seems silly.
This a bug that needs to be fixed (soon!) as it is still there in: Minecraft Snapshot 13w48a and reported over and over again. Lets call my server: "Island PVP" its a skyblock like server but in a ocean of water (30 blocks deep) and islands all over the place.
Do I need to prevent my PVP players from using boats and mine carts all together ?
O the joy I made a house whit a protected door on my plot now iam safe, right?
Crying kids about killed animals, that's the name of the game.
bucklers seem to like it, until they got robed in the same way.
seems legit,...
Plz, buttik team do you magic !!
YEY its fixed in 13w48b =D
Yes! I have waited for this so much. I tested it right now, works great
In 1.7.2 I would be placed 4 blocks up and 4 blocks left from the minecart, which led to my death quite a few times. But I just tested the new snapshot (13w48b), and it seems to be fixed.
In the Linux version, the bug remains unsolved. I observed:
-Always dismounting 3 by 3 blocks away in open field
-Falling down into the deep (dismounting into thin air)
-Dismounting to the other side of a wall
I always let the updates download and install, and have a 'vanilla' game. Do I need to reopen this?
I am using 13w48b in linux and the bug is fixed in my game.
@Mark Veldhuis: Have you checked the button "Enable experimental development versione ("snapshots")" in your launcher?
@Michael Radzy: Thanks, now it is fixed in my game as well
Just checked this out. I am able to reproduce this bug in both 13w48b and 13w49a in Windows 8.1
This ticket appears to be specific to the OSX version of the game, but the ones for Windows are being closed as duplicate. The bug still exists.
@Kiel Your server not on the snapshot?
@Talven81 - whoops. No, it isn't. I saw the versions and assumed client.
I am still experiencing this bug on 1.7.4
As am I, my nether track is completely unusable, as it spawns me outside the wall, and i fall into lava.
Nevermind, our server was not updated to 1.7.4, i assumed it was being able to connect. works great!
The glitch is only partially fixed. Rather than spawning you several blocks away from the minecart, it drops you within one block of the minecart. The issue of the area being one block smaller on the south side is still there, and with the area so small, this completely eliminates dismounting the minecart to the south.
In addition, dismounting a boat offsets your drop position depending on the direction the boat is facing, making even more difficult to work with than minecarts.
Edit: The more I work with boats the less consistent their dismount position is. Recreating setups in different plocations changes whether you can dismount in a certain position, so does changing something and then undoing that change. The setup involves placing a boat between four stone walls, the boat floating on water, and attempting to dismount outside of the walls. I am uploading a screenshot to demonstrate the starting setup.
I'm running a vanilla 1.7.4 client but a Bukkit 1.7.2 dev server but I would think the exit criteria would be something that happened client-side. When I press shift to exit a Minecart, I either appear correctly on top of the Minecart or on the other side of a wall next to the rails. Similar case with boats where I exit the boat and appear several blocks away and the boat becomes a ghost entity and I have to sign off and back on to see where the boat actually is.
@Chris Andrews First, Bukkit is not vanilla and thus has nothing to do in this bug tracker. Second, Server and Client do that action both on thier own, so for the server you were somewhere diffrent to where you were on the client.
@Manuel Gwosdz: Or it was possible that the server was calculating it correctly and the client was whom was wrong. Just pointing it out since I'm getting the same behavior as this vanilla defect.
@Chris Andrews: A modified server can cause problems on an unmodified client. This is simply not tracked here.
Please re-open the issue, as I have confirmed that it is still misbehaving in creative and adventure mode, and 1.7.4. I am an admin of a server that relies on minecarts for player transportation, and this bug has been extremely annoying for our staff and players.
Confirmed still present in 14w03b.
Problem happen only if X and/or Z are negatives, due to lack of floor()'ing in the function in charge of Entities dismounting.

Of course, it's on server's side
I've noticed on the 1.8 snapshots that minecarts will now occasionally put you 1 unit West of the block you're supposed to land on, as opposed to 1 unit North in 1.7.
EDIT: Disregard the above, it depends on where you are in the world only.
Tried ElNounch's fix for MCP903; can confirm it solves the problem.
Is there a reason why the algorithm doesn't aim to put the player in a half-integer X/Z position above the valid block, opposed to adding an integer to their current position? I wrote a Bukkit plugin using this method a few months ago; just seems like the easier way to do it.
Still in 14w08a v.2, and much worse. I got teleported over 30 blocks.
EDIT: It doesn't happen all the time
Can you give us a screenshot of the location it happened in, PTR_91?
