The wither was eating through obsidian blocks.
I don't know if it's a bug or if it is a feature, but if it is a feature it is too overpowered.

This is default Wither behaviour. It's able to break all blocks except for those in the #minecraft:wither_immune tag.

We're tracking this issue in MC-410, so this ticket is being resolved and linked as a duplicate.

In the attached image, you show a wither encased in obsidian. Does MC-410 describe your issue?
The Wither can destroy any block if it can't target a player or mob. As far as I know it's intentional.
This is intended.
