For the same issue that happens on PlayStation 4, see MCD-1710.
Version 1.8.8.0, released on May 5th 2021, introduced the feature of cloud saves. Please make sure to use this feature in order to avoid this issue.
Cloud saves can be accessed by opening the character selection and either clicking "Upload Hero" when an existing hero is selected, or "Download Hero" when an empty space is selected.
The bug: Save data is lost after a crash.
I played for about 5 hours with two friends, and in the middle of a dungeon my computer crashed, then when I launched the game again, my lvl22 character was gone and replaced with a lvl1 with a skin I hadn't chosen?
This is pretty lame.

Found a solution for ps4 users. Go to the game then press options and check the upload/download from cloud and check the save data there. Was lucky enough to find my characters there
Restoring from cloud is only a possible option if the player in question is using PS Plus, which is often not the case with couch co-op. Also cloud restore requires it to be done immediately after the issue occurs, before the game's new (broken) save is pushed to the cloud, as there's no versioning on cloud saves.
So while this suggestion can potentially be helpful, it will only benefit a portion of those effected by what is basically a poorly engineered game save process. If the save process renamed the existing save, then wrote out a new save, then removed the renamed one, we'd have a safe save. On startup, the game could roll back to any existing renamed save, since its existence would prove the save process did not complete correctly.
Agreed Alex, same issue here (just one player have Plus) and the problem is not solved yet. Please Mojang... find a way.
FYI, this issue is really a duplicate of
MCD-1205, an issue that's been open for over 3 months and is unresolved and unaddressed, in spite of having more people voting for it over an other open issue. It seems that data loss does not matter and is not a priority.
I have started at least six new gameplays, because of lost data. It is very frustrating to be nervous while playing a game. I really enjoy this game, but it needs some polish.
I contacted the playstation support regarding this, after trying out a few of their steps and nothing worked, they refunded the game.
First I was a bit upset, I didn't want my money back, I wanted my game to work.
After sometime however, I'm glad of the outcome. I could spend my money on a game that actually works.
I refuse to buy the game again untill this problem is resolved, it's far too big of an issue to ignore when all your progress can just be wiped in an instant.
Same issue still happening. I have blue screen crashes every couple hours of play. They have never caused much of an issue besides losing progress in the current level until yesterday. Been playing 4 person coop with my kids all on the same PS4 Pro. It crashed yesterday and corrupted the save data for my and my son's characters which were in the 50s. The other three lower level characters on the account were all fine of course. I realize the cause of the crash might be hard to pin down but a simple work around would be to have 3 or four versions of each character saved. Every time it saves it creates a new save for that character and deletes the oldest one. Then if one gets corrupted it can simply revert back to the last good save. I am sure that is a fairly common bit of coding. I have played on Playstations since they came out and have NEVER had a game crash and delete my save games or delete a character. This really is just bad coding on this game. You need a bit more robustness in your code before releasing to the public. Crashes happen but you need a contingency to revive data when it does because you know it will. We are going to give the game one more chance. I will manually upload the character saves to the cloud after each session so we don't lose more than one session of play, however, this shouldn't be necessary. You should automate the process of creating safe saves that can be used to restore data if lost due to a crash.
My son just lost all his progress after a crash and the save data file is corrupted.
I'm the only household member with PS Plus, so I can't download an old version of the save data for him.
This should be a top priority to fix as it ruins the whole game experience for what seems to be a great game.
Happened to me again today for the 3rd time. I think thats it for me with this game and I wont be buying the new DLC till this is fixed.

player 1 is ok but since we play together. My player number 2 without ps plus doesn’t have cloud access so data is not saved via ps plus.
would be very helpful if Mojang offered a save option for any player
ive lost my character twice. And ready to stop playing until it is fixed. I was all ready to get the DLC in December but what’s the point? The November update wiped out my character 🤣😱🙁😂
Ok tried many things.
when I log in as me (second ID no ps plus account) and I go to data management, minecraft dungeons to save character data. I am there. So I save it to USB.
Then the update of MCD November 2020 and my character is gone. I restore my character back onto MCD from USB. 🙁😔 no luck I’m not there. But I know the data is there. And the options available are player 1’s character. Player 1 is still there.
If I log in as player 2 and enter MCD the game complains I need to purchase it. So my family sharing doesn’t exist on this game. Now my question is if I purchased the game for player 2 would it recognize my character now? I haven’t tried as the issue to me is 1. It will download onto the ps4 and overwrite the current game
2. I can restore from backup to get the old version back. However, will MCD recognize that both player 1 & 2 have bought a copy of the game and connect to both players?
I haven’t tried this yet as it as been time consuming plus extra expense and unsure if it will work. I will report back if I do try this
My other idea is to contact Sony and see if this is a family sharing issue. Will report back
So I figured out that we did not have the ps4 account linked/activated to the ps4. In doing so. We were able to access the program via player 2. However in 2 player offline play, if player 1 started MCD, we only had the option of player 1’s character.
When player 2 started MCD, WE ONLY HAD ACCESS TO MY NO LONGER LOST CHARACTER!!
Fixed? Nope
Still need to be able to have player 1 login choose his skin and then have player 2 join (me) and FIND MY SKIN THERE! It’s not
I am running out of ideas of how to get this to work. Please
Mojang help
Any news on this one? Mojang ,are you there? Are you alive? I'm genuinely curious. This is a bug that basically makes the game unplayable, any news? Is it fixed? So many questions.
Thank you for your report!
