End gateways on the main end island take you to a tiny island
The bug
Currently, end gateways on the main island are broken and do usually take you back to the obsidian platform (see MC-138069). There is however a workaround, see this comment.
Now that we have a working end gateway, we can actually use it to get to the outer end islands ... or can we?
While we now have an end gateway which nbt data is consistent with one of 1.13.2, it does take you to a tiny island, merely generated for the gateway portal itself, still far away from the outer end islands

How to reproduce
- Go to the end (/setblock ~ ~ ~ minecraft:end_portal)
- Kill the ender dragon (/kill @e[type=ender_dragon])
- Go to the generated end gateway and replace it with one that actually works (/setblock <pos> minecraft:end_gateway destroy)
- Use an ender pearl to get through it
→
You are on a tiny island far away from the outer end islands
Why this (most likely) happens
As Meri Diana pointed out, it seems to be the case, that the outer end islands generate much further away than in previous versions. Whether or not this change was made intentionally, it seems to be the case that the end gateway's distance was not updated accordingly. Since the game cannot find any blocks where it wants to generate the gateway, it generates a tiny end island to at least have some place to put the player.

@ anyone who recently commented and is looking for help, please read my comment here.
To explain it again in other words: End gateways can be dataholders. They can contain the coordinates of an ExitPortal you get teleported to.
Via commands, coordinates of the ExitPortal for end gateways can be added manually.
For some reason in the current 1.14 snapshots the gateways (which are set automatically when you kill a dragon) contain by default the obsidian spawn platform's coordinates.
This is why you get teleported to that platform each time, and unless you change the coordinates of the ExitPortal via commands, there is no other way to circumvent that. So you don't have to try and try again, those coordinates currently seem to be fix.
Correct would be that the gateway wouldn't have any coordinates inserted yet, but only as soon as you entered it / went to an outer End island. That's how it is in 1.13.2 release.
For some reason currently no outer End islands are located at around the ~1k mark like before.
Because of this, apparently MC-141823 ("End gateways on the main end island take you to a tiny island") is happening, no teleport to an End city island, as it seems they are too far out.
I am very certain that Mojang has taken or will take notice of this and will fix it before a release version, as this is vital to the Survival gameplay.
Mojira moderators are present on this bugpost, and from what is publicly known, it seems they can come in contact with the developers and will surely notify them of it, if they haven't already, so keep calm and always carry a towel with you ![]()
For those of you who mentioned they play Survival in snapshots: There have been snapshots which were hazardous to worldsaves, so you may reconsider.
You should never play a world you care about in a snapshot, ever - without backups, and always keep in mind the potential possibility that all effort and progress you achieved during your snapshot (Survival) play will be gone due to bugs, so you may have to start all over again with your backup in the last MC release version update (1.13.2), or a previous 1.14 snapshot version.
If you know of those risks and also that you may invest time without keeping its fruits, of course do as you please, but then don't be disappointed or angry if the worst case happens.
And positive energy is always welcome Ruben Bugarin, also sending some to everyone ![]()
hmuller I'm not so sure that this bug - 'obsidian platform coordinates entered as default in dragonkill-generated + on outer islands naturally existing end gateways' - and 'outer islands around the ~1k mark aren't generating anymore' are linked (unless both are intentional, as speculated below), however I am fairly certain that MC-141823 and outer islands around the 1k mark not generating anymore are related.
But you raise a very good argument here - Shouldn't "outer islands around 1k mark aren't generating anymore" get an own bugpost? (Question to the moderators here.)
(As soon as that would be fixed, MC-141823 should be automatically fixed, too, potentially.)
This is only extreme speculation, but maybe they are changing up the end cities/outer islands as for their optics and/or content, and thus have intentionally entered the obsidian spawn platform as teleport destination for the time being while they are still not finished with re-coding those end cities/outer islands. Wishful thinking though, likely ![]()
Let's just wait and see, if this is still not fixed in the first 1.14 prerelease, we'll somehow make sure that we know that the Devs have at least taken notice of this ![]()

When taking a gateway to the outer end islands, it is possible, although rare, for the player to end up in such an isolated location that they cannot reasonably escape if they do not have ender pearls, blocks and/or an elytra and firework rockets on them, even if they do have a pickaxe. I'm unsure whether Mojang would be interested in fixing this. This has been an issue with the obsidian platform for a long time, and no experienced MInecrafter goes into the dragon fight without bringing some blocks or a pearl with them. But since gateways tend to be more generous - at worst, leaving the player with enough blocks that they can build a short bridge, get an enderman to spawn, kill them, and then pearl to the mainland - players may not be prepared for a truly terrible spawn where they have only 10 blocks to work with.
To reproduce
- Create a creative world with seed 5917284831799768604
/execute in minecraft:the_end run teleport @s 0 60 70
/kill @n[type=ender_dragon]
- Throw an ender pearl through the gateway that has spawned in front of you
- Ponder the unfortunate situation you would be in if this happened in survival
For comparison, repeat the steps above with seed 193221013593822 instead. Doing so results in what I would call a "very bad" spawn, an annoyance which can be overcome with sufficient patience and ingenuity. With the original seed, the player might theoretically be able to escape through insanely lucky block drop velocity and a healthy pickaxe, but for practical purposes it's just not possible.
Thoughts on a fix
If this is a valid bug, then it's unclear what the best fix might be. It may be necessary to redesign end gateways so the player can reliably get back to the main island, similar to how nether portals can be used without issue in skyblock worlds. Making gateways an end highlands-only structure would fix the particular instance I found but would come with its own challenges.

Confirmed, setblocking gateways in The End teleported me solely onto tiny islands, see my comment here and my tweet here
Tests have to be conducted (I don't have much time myself) if this here is true in 18w50a; if so, read this.
I haven't looked into the code, if the game tries to place you within a certain range of the gateway, but if it does, it'd make sense you end up on a tiny island instead, before the teleport would fail completely, or you'd port into The Void.
Confirmed for 19w03a.
Note: It seems to be confirmed by the community that currently no End City islands are generated around the ~1k mark as before. Thus my previous suspicion, that the game teleports you to a tiny island (or else you may land into The Void or aren't tp'd at all), seems to be correct; I'm not sure if this info should be added to the bugpost, that this bug here may be caused due to lack of outer islands generating as before, closer to the main island.
Just a data point on the End City generation distance. As of 19w05a, seed -1504342332604097644 has two known End Cities generated at the coordinates:
(48, ~, -1200)
(736, ~, -1232)
This is closer in than the previous snapshots (which put the End Cities beyond the 15K mark for this seed), but still apparently too far out for the current End Gateway code to reach.
I suspect the issue is something else, there were various problems due to different world generation before (e.g.
MC-138225MC-138448,MC-139377).In my testseed, the dragonkill-gateway's ExitPortal is -240/729, and the nearest EndCity is located at -880/672.
So, in 19w05a, EndCities can generate below the ~1k mark, thus, if there's something like a maximum distance a dragonkill-gateway teleports one to an outer EndIsland, this can't be the reason for the tiny-island-port, as below 1k should be within the maximum threshold, unless that got changed.
It seems currently that the dragonkill-gateway just doesn't port you to an EndCity-island directly, or at least quite close to one.
Unless, of course, it is WaI that a player may have to venture a couple hundreds of blocks to an EndCity island by bridging the gaps.
This issue is not caused by terrain generation - this should remain unchanged. Actual root cause is already know, but the fix just missed snapshot deadline.
[Mojang] Bartosz Bok Thank you for the heads up, great to know that the underlying cause has already been found, just hasn't been pushed into the current snapshot!
Bartosz, Yes - Adding to Meri's, thanks for that communication, it eliminates the need to comment.
I guess this can then be resolved as fixed for next snapshot.
I usually wait until fix is merged to main before resolving. Anyway, just wanted to let you know to make sure nobody spends more time on this issue.
Still taking you to a tiny island with latest 19w06a snapshot, but this one was close to a larger island (screenshot).
Same outcome was possible in 1.13 and earlier versions. It's a bug only if it behaved differently on previous version with same seed.
Just a question about 19w39a: what should I make of this: the first end gateway brought me to a small island near a large island (so that's not a problem), but the gateway itself was not actually visible. I blew up the island with TNT, and the gateway appeared by which I could return to the main island. Are gateways supposed to spawn inside land?
