If you have died in hardcore mode and click on "Delete World", the start screen with white background appears. If you then click on "Singleplayer" and press ESC you return to the "Delete World" menu.

When "Delete World" is pressed, you are sent to the menu which has a white screen (white-menu-background.png) MC-148865. If you try and Edit the world's options, it will overlay the in-game events (edit-world-options.png). If you try to join the Hardcore world you just left the screen will go black and the game will be completely unresponsive (rejoin-hardcore-world.png).

We're actually already tracking this issue in MC-148865 and MC-96521, so I resolved and linked this ticket as a duplicate.
However, those ticket already have been resolved as Fixed. The fix will arrive in the next version or is already included in the latest development version of the game.

There is defiantly a bug when you die in HC mode. Since 1.13 when you die there are still things in memory that are not dereferenced. Like the viewport still shows your death when you are in the main screen, and I always have to restart MC after HC death since it will crash when I make a new game.
However I do not think this bug is just isolated to a blank background screen in the main menu. I would change the title and make it more general.
I attached my latest log. Its easy to replicate on OS X. Just created a world, got myself killed then clicked delete world. Then in main menu create a new game. The game will freeze. I have to force quit. This always happens.
Looking around I would say this bug might be related to HC server issues where people say they are not getting disconnected.
Confirmed in 1.14.1 and 1.14.2 Pre-Release 1.
You can still hear sounds from the world you just left by hitting "Delete World". The game will freeze if you try to join the hardcore world again.
