The bug
Sometimes when you clear water with sponges, lily pads will keep floating, if you place blocks next or under it, it's fine, but if you bug a block on the lily pad, it will be replaced.
How to reproduce
- Make a 5 × 5 pool of water as demonstrated in the attached picture. It doesn't seem to work in lakes/rivers
- Fill it with water
- Place lily pads on the water, the more you place, the better, it will just increase the chance just leave a hole to place a sponge in the water
- Place the sponge where you left the hole

Confirmed in 1.8.2-pre6. Seems to happen around 1/90 of the time.
Confirmed in 1.8.2-pre6 but a little note: These are ghost blocks, click on it and they disappear.
Can anyone come up with a more reliable way to replicate this? It is really hard to get it to happen.

Can't reproduce this in MC 1.12.1 after 10 tries using a 7x7 water pool.
Fixed? Bad luck? Can anyone else reproduce this in the newest version of Minecraft?
When experimenting with this myself I found that this issue is a manifestation of
MC-9591If you relog after placing the lily pads but before placing the sponge you will find all lily pads still there will always be removed when the sponge as is placed.

In my testing, this issue was present in 21w10a, but no longer occurs in versions above or equal to 21w11a. With that being said, this issue has been fixed in 21w11a.
