Split screen additional player skins not saved, reset to default "Steve" or "Alex" skin
When playing offline mode with multiple players using split screen on a single world, host skin will remain as created/selected, however guests on the split screen world, that have their own PSN/Microsoft log in accounts, the skins are not saved into the world data.
Once player 2/3/4 join game on their PSN/Microsoft accounts on a single console PS4 system and join the Host's world in Minecraft. Players 2/3/4 in split screen can create a character skin for themselves to use in the world, however upon save and exit of the world, players 2/3/4 skins are lost. When host loads the same world, with the same 2/3/4 players using the same PSN/Microsoft log in IDs joining the world they have already played, they load as Steve and not the skins they took 30-45 minutes creating for the world.
This disrupts immersion, game play, and causes frustration to players 2/3/4 who spent all that time creating their in game look.
After the 2nd or 3rd rejoining of the world and having to re-create their skins each time they join the world, it making them to want to stop playing Minecraft Bedrock Edition.
This issue was not present in PlayStation 4 Edition update 1.95 or below, it has only occurred with the 1.99 PS4 Edition update which installed Bedrock 1.14.0 onto PlayStation 4. This issue does not exist when using the Editions button and play the Legacy Console PS4 Edition (it remembers split screen skins for all players)… the issue is only with the Minecraft "Bedrock" Edition 1.14.0 world play on the PlayStation 4 Console.

Came on here to report this exact same thing. Have lost MONTHS worth of work with this latest update MCPE-58640 that supposedly fixed split screen characters from showing up as default skins. Fix one thing, introduce a dozen other problems.
I'd rather keep the default skin and still keep my inventory than have to redo it all.
This also happened to me. Nothing can be found for player 2 in any world. It likely has to do with MCPE-58640 in which they changed how player 2 is stored in memory.
Since updating to 1.16.210 splitscreen players are not logged into their Xbox accounts. Pause menu doesn't show pictures of other players, they don't get achievements, lose their skin settings and they got entirely new data on already existing worlds causing their pets to not listen to them and loosing their inventory, ender chest content and levels.
We have encountered this issue before but it was rare and we could solve it by resetting a game but since the update it happens to every splitscreen player every single time on every single world.
I've watched other bug reports being closed and redirected to MCPE-55815 and even though it does share symptoms I think it might be different cause as linked issue is over a year old and we have this problem since 1.16.210 (update that, according to Minecraft wiki, has this in a change log: "Split-screen characters are now stored in memory and re-joining the game will keep the character that the player had (MCPE-58640)".).
This is a huge problem for us as there is no way to downgrade to older version and there is no point in progressing a game until this is fixed (as I expect a fix would cause levels and inventory loss again as players would get their previous inventory/pets/etc.)
Edit1: Players also share main account's owned skins and main player's sales with villagers (only the main player cured villagers but everyone has the sales now). Didn't notice how it worked before but I figured it might have to do with this bug as well (as I imagine that everyone should have their own prices).

Problem persists in PS4 Bedrock 1.14.1 (TU 2.01).
I can confirm this for Xbox One version 1.14.3 the hotfix thingy

Still present in 1.16.0 and 1.16.1. This is even more infuriating especially after
MCPE-48207was fixed claiming in the release notes of 1.16.1: "Custom skins once again work properly on multiplayer"For the first player, it allows the player to go to the user profile's character creator allowing them to use any pre-existing skin. There is no such option for any other players.
If a moderator sees this, could they please notify developers about this issue?
Can confirm this is still happening on the latest version on Xbox One. My wife and I play with our kids on 4-player split screen and it’s very annoying.

This issue persists on Xbox One. Various issues have been made about this issue in two years time, some were declared 'invalid', many 'duplicates' of this one. This is a basic functionality that needs to be addressed by devs, not admins, many people buy minecraft on an expensive console for its coop features. Saving and displaying a custom skin is a vital component of that experience and not too much to ask!
I didn't realize that this was a problem on so many platforms
There is some funkyness going on with the XBOX Live accounts. I have a local BDS server (not really relevant, I'm saying that only because I have server logs that might prove to be valuable) that me and my family are playing. When connecting from my PS4 the first player gets identified nicely, their skin loaded and all. Second player always gets defaulted to Steve or Alex. What is interesting is that the second player using the same Xbox Live account can connect to the BDS via their mobile, get identified as the same user (same inventory, same position).
Above is a snipped from the server logs. Notice the first line with empty xuid. That's the second player using the console. Line 4 is the same player logging in via mobile. Looks to me that when split screen players access a world their xuid is not passed on to the server. This was tested in multiple user combinations always with the same result - only first player gets his xuid passed to the server. For the rest of them it's blank. Which explains the skins as they're (I'm assuming) bound to the xuid.

This is the case for PS4 in version 1.16.20
I have this problem also in realms on nintendo switch.
Whenever we are playing in split-screen on our realm, player two is always named 'Steve' and connected via LAN rather than having our Microsoft account details. This means that player 2 can't access their purchased skin items or custom skins.
Only player ones microsoft account active. Player two uses player ones account even if player two has its own microsoft account.

MCPE-55185?Same issue here. My wife and I play on PS4, each has our own account. When I log in and host the game I have all my skins set. When wife joins she is always generic "Steve"
She's created her own personal skins customizations 4 times now. She has a PS account on the system, and when she logs in to it with her second controller via split-screen her skins are gone, but she has all the items on her from the last play session. It knows who she is but not her customizations.
Confirming this bug on Xbox One. We have multiple profiles, and the second player that joins the local split screen is always assigned the default steve skin. Also, that second player has no option to change the skin, whereas the first one can.
We've tried deleting the other skins and leave only the customized one, but no success.
I have also tried creating a game on my Win 10, and only the primary player (the one that starts the game on Xbox) gets to use the customized skin and make changes, and the second one does not.
I see that this is quite an old issue, and I would like to see this fixed.
If I can try a few scenarios, or if there is anything that I can provide (like logs, screenshots, files) or do some testing, I am more thatn willing to assist.
I've got the same issue while playing Minecraft split screen on Xbox Series X via game pass. Would be lovely to see a bug fix.
I realized that you can use the character creator as player 2 and create your skin all over again, but this is is a waste of time since it will be deleted after you save and quit the game.
This issue is not resolved on PS4. Once the PS4 is turned off the skin is not kept.
This is not resolved on PS4, version 1.16.210. First player works as expected, second player logging in (via pressing "options" on second controller) has default skin and is called "Steve". Both players have a valid PSN account and a valid Microsoft account linked to it. If they play alone, each account works flawlessly. Seems as for the second player, the link between PSN account and Microsoft account is not fully established.
Why was this issue closed jst before the 1.16.210 patch? To have less "open issue" count or what? Please one of the developers to take this seriously and make good for us - paying customers both windows and xbox platforms. Guys, this is not how support works.
On 1.16.210 on Xbox - can confirm a partial fix - the character set on the Microsoft account is not established, but upon leaving and rejoining the world, the character edited in the world stays.
Update: Confirming that the update 1.16.220 fixed the issue on Xbox One. Skin changes are now saved and properly loaded upon entering the world as a second player using local split screen.
This isn't fixed on PS4. I am logged into my PSN account, second player. It never remembers my skin, plus it doesn't give me the option to login to my Microsoft account. Am I missing something?
The issue was shortly gone on XBOX; but is present again.
This issue is NOT resolved. I have been unable to use players skins for anyone other than player 1 in local multiplayer (either offline or online!) in literal YEARS. When is this going to get resolved???

One minor improvement on PS4 is that now each player can see their own skins in their own split screen window, but player 1 looking at player 2 sees Steve. Will update if there are any changes
Noteworthy is that both split screen player skins reset upon entering the nether.
Also, reapplying a short skin doesn't always update the armor size, so that can make the player walk around in a too big armor which they visually clip through (as seen by the other split screen player).

What exactly is Mojang doing? I realized that this issue was first reported on 12/11/2019.
It may not be a serious problem, but it is frustrating over so long the problem persists unresolved.
In 1 month it completes 2 years of existing bug without resolution.
Can confirm in version 1.19.20 on Xbox. Custom skins for other accounts won't load and guest accounts never save. This also affects any settings set by the player. Example: FOV set to 90 when playing solo, resets to 60 while joining via split screen.
Furthermore, saved skins don't appear in skin creator while being Player 2, 3, or 4.
I think this is the problem I'm having too!
The amount of fires I'm having to put out between my kids because of this bug is too much. Splitscreen - whomever is Player 2 gets defaulted to a generic Steve. No custom skins. Not even basic settings configs.
Has it really been broken for 2 years? Is there really any hope of this getting fixed??
This issue comes and goes. I reporeted working some time ago, but it reappeared again some time later.
And it seems the number of affected users just isn't high enough to fix it once and for all.
First time player of the game for about three days now. My wife and I have been enjoying the experience immensely, but this glitch definitely hampers the fun when she is forced to create her character each time we start a session – doesn't even matter if the game is closed or not.
We are playing on the PS4 Bedrock Edition – she has a PSN account that she's logged into, but no synced Microsoft account. According to some folks on Reddit, that doesn't make a difference. What makes this even stranger is that her inventory and level are saved with each session. The only thing not saved is her custom appearance.

This definitely happens with synced Microsoft accounts when using split screen on the PS4/PS5. You can see by the below screenshots that the blue player connects with a correct xuid but subsequent logins do not recognise an xuid. The username shown is the PS name rather than the minecraft login. This means skins etc are never remembered for players 2 and 3.
Subsequently when one of the red players logins first the xuid is recognised and the username shown is the minecraft login. This also means the player isn't recognised and it plays as a different player.
Version: 1.19.71 (including all versions I have used on switch 1.19.x)
Platform: Nintendo Switch
Steps to reproduce:
Start a local or realm game.
Join a 2nd player into the game via split-screen.
Can be reproduced 100% of the time.
Makes players not want to play.
This issue is still unresolved on Xbox as well. I play on split screen multiplayer as player 2 and while player 1 can access their characters and create and save them just fine, I can not. Pressing "my characters" does nothing, and when I remake my character it does not save it after the session is saved.
I'm so glad to have finally found this ticket. Hopefully they can get it fixed soon. I was linked here by support when contacting them about the issue and told that they've experienced it themselves' firsthand and no fix or workaround is available. So, apparently they are aware of the issue.
I don't know why this problem has persisted for so long, still it is not resolved!
Confirmed this is still an issue in 1.20. This is extremely frustrating for the kids who use split screen features.
There also seems be increased frequency of game crashes occurring in 1.20 when in split screen mode which makes this worse as the relogin means skins are lost.
Just adding that this issue is still happening. Kids get frustrated with this issue, to the point that they don’t want to play together at times.please fix. We are on XBox.
My wife and I are experiencing this issue as well on Xbox Series X. Everytime we load our world, she is given a random skin. She can edit it, but every time we save and quit, her skin is reset the next time we load our world. She is signing in with her Microsoft account and not a guest account.
We got (still) the same problem on Nintendo Switch ... my girlfriend gets a black man ... that's very frustrating!!
If Skins are not saved, then the automatic generation of new skins should consider the gender and the ethnicity of the Players Profile!
I don't think we've got to with a bug. So please change at least this detail!
