Minecraft uses two different color palettes for leather
This ticket can be considered an extension of MC-181530, as I've noticed that this issue applies to more than just saddles.
The bug
There currently appear to be two distinct colors used for things made of leather. One of these is a light orange color (henceforth referred to as the "classic palette"), and the other a darker brown (which we will call the "modern palette"). The colors used by leather and its products commonly differ where consistency would be expected.
Examples of cases where the classic palette is used:
- Leather itself
- Item frames as an item
- Item frames when placed
- Saddles as an item
- Saddles on pigs
- Saddles on striders
- Saddles on camels
- Saddles on ravagers
Examples of cases where the modern palette is used:
- Leather armor as an item
- Leather armor when equipped
- Leather horse armor as an item
- Leather horse armor when equipped
- Saddles on horses/donkeys/mules
Expected results
All items made of leather would use the same palette, regardless of what the item is.
Actual results
These two different palettes still exist, even differing for the same item in one case (saddles), and recent introductions continue to use different palettes (saddled striders use the classic palette despite leather horse armor using the modern palette).
How to fix
Either all classic palette using items should be retextured to use the modern palette, or modern palette items should be retextured to use the classic palette.
Notes
The "classic palette" versus "modern palette" distinction originates with 1.4.2's changes to leather armor, which switched it from using the classic palette to the modern palette (but leaving leather as an item, as well as saddles as an item and on pigs, unchanged). The following is a screenshot from 1.2.5, when leather armor still used the classic palette, demonstrating how leather armor matched the leather item much more closely:

The bug
Items made of iron do not appear to use a standard color palette. This is the same problem as MC-248611, but for iron instead of leather.
It is possible to partition iron products into roughly two different major palettes, which we will call the "shiny palette" and "dull palette", respectively. However, there is still a considerable amount of variation between these.
Items using the shiny palette include:
- Iron ingots and nuggets
- Iron helmets, chestplates, leggings and boots, both equipped and as items
- Chain helmets, chestplates, leggings and boots, both equipped and as items
- Iron horse armor, both equipped and as an item
- Compasses
- Buckets of all content types
- Rails, powered rails, detector rails and activator rails
- Minecarts, both in item and entity forms
- Flint and Steel
- Iron axes, pickaxes, shovels, hoes and swords
- Hammer in the anvil UI
- Pistons
- Blocks of iron
- Iron pressure plates
- Iron doors and trapdoors
- Iron bars
- Iron golems
Items using the dull palette include:
- Anvils
- Cauldrons
- Chains
- Hanging signs
- Hoppers
- Lanterns
- Tripwire hooks
- Mob spawners
- Smithing tables
Expected results
The palette used for iron would be consistent throughout the game.
Actual results
The colors used are not consistent.
Golden armor and tools textures use a different palette when compared to all other gold-based textures, making them inconsistent, and visually different.
Screenshots/Videos:
While the difference is not incredibly obvious at first glance in game, it is more noticable once the two palettes are directly compared.
As an example, here is a golden chestplate with the current color palette, and then swapped with the palette of raw gold:

And here is are golden armor and tools next to other gold items:

Palettes:
The first palette is golden armor, second is golden tools, and third is raw gold.

The colors used for armor and tools is more muted, with green and brown hues when compared to raw gold. This same comparison can be achieved with the color palettes of other items besides raw gold.
Notes:
- The intention of this report is not to point out slight differences in individual colors of the palette, or suggesting changes be made to the palette simply because I (or others) think those changes should be made, but instead how the current palette that is used is distinctly different and inconsistent to other item palettes used.
- The gold armor item and entity model textures both use different color palettes, despite being the same thing in different forms.
