Mace smash attack does not knock back other players when they are not the attacked entity
Using a mace smash attack on an entity when there is a player nearby will not knock back the player.
Steps to Reproduce:
- With two accounts, log onto an LAN world
- Provide Player 1 with a mace
- Have Player 2 stand still
- Put an armor stand near Player 2
- Have Player 1 stand near the armor stand, then teleport into the air
/tp @p ~ ~20 ~
- Before landing, do a smash attack on the armor stand
Expected & Observed Results:
- The attack will knock back any surrounding entities, excluding the player standing nearby.
- The attack would knock back any entities standing near the attacked entity.

This does not appear to be fixed, I am still unable to knock back a player using a mace smash attack:
[^2024-05-11_14-21-45.mp4]Notice how the pig takes knockback (more than usual because it has no gravity), but the survival mode player does not

When a player uses the wind burst enchantment against another player that is blocking, they will not be moved. If the player that is blocking is not the attacked entity, they will be moved.
Steps to Reproduce:
- Log two players/accounts into a server
- Player 1 start blocking
/give @p minecraft:shield[minecraft:unbreakable={value:true}] - (If reproducing with one person and two accounts) Either pause the game, or press F3 + T and tab out of the game window to continue blocking
- Player 2 get an enchanted mace
/give @p mace[minecraft:enchantments={levels:{wind_burst:3}}] - Player 2 attack player 1 with mace
→
Player 1 is not moved - Player 2 spawn an entity next to player 1 (Recommended is shulker, as they don't walk)
- Use the mace on the spawned entity
→
Player 1 is moved

Notes:
I can still reproduce this in the latest version, pre-release 3, [MCQA] v-weszaj. Here is a demonstration:
2024-04-16_21-31-57.mp4
(Note for the video, the player blocking with a shield is not facing the shulker, but testing afterwards, the direction the player is facing has no affect)
- Test 1 -> Control test, with player 1 attacking a nearby shulker with a regular mace smash attack
Result: Player 1 IS NOT moved (Though, the player should be moved as reported inMC-269601) - Test 2 -> Player 1 attacks nearby shulker with wind burst enchantment while player 2 IS NOT blocking.
Result: Player 2 is moved, as expected. - Test 3 -> Player 1 attacks nearby shulker with wind burst enchantment while player 2 IS blocking.
Result: Player 2 is moved, which is not expected, as they are blocking.
Now that MC-269601 has been fixed, players around the smash attack area of effect can now be knocked back. However, despite players shielding into the direction the knockback was sourced from (the smash attack that was performed), the knockback is not mitigated in any way, unlike how knockback from other sources is mitigated successfully, such as explosions which are also AoE.
There's another similar issue regarding wind burst, currently reported in MC-270214.
How to reproduce
You need two players to reproduce this.
- Equip a shield, and tell your friend to equip a mace.
- Summon an armor stand, stay close to it.
- Tell your friend to perform an smash attack into the armor stand.
- Before your friend hits the armor stand, stay blocking with a shield while facing the armor stand.
- Notice how the knockback from the smash attack isn't mitigated at all, despite blocking with a shield.
Expected result
The knockback from the smash attack would be mitigated when the player is shielding, similar to how knockback from explosions are blocked.
Observed result
Blocking with a shield doesn't have any effect, and the player is pushed far away.
Also affects 24w14a.
